The VA Medical Death Trap: A scandalous record of drug abuse

May-14-2014
http://www.salem-news.com/graphics/snheader.jpg
Marijuana should be the drug of choice. MEDICAL MARIJUANA COULD HAVE SAVED THESE VETERANS YEARS OF PAIN AND TURMOIL.
PTSD
"Private Lives" by Matt Rota
(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The recent reports of “drug wait lists” for Veterans seeking VA medical care is egregious beyond understanding for Veterans who were willing to sacrifice their bodies, minds and lives for the 99% of American people who, for some reason, do not seem to understand or care for the plight of the 1% which is the number of Veterans who wore the uniform and faced the cruel enemy which is BATTLE.
The New York Times printed several articles delineating the cruel consequences of battle and the worst features of inadequate or dangerous medical care of Veterans of current and previous wars.
One article in the Times printed “A soldier Fights off the Cold” (May 11 2014), which is about a Veteran of three tours in Iraq.
On Aug 4 2004, he was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. It sliced open his belly, filled his legs and face with shrapnel. It tore his intestines, lacerated his liver, destroyed his spleen, punctured his diaphragm, flattened his lungs, shattered his ribs and ruptured discs in his spine. He watched his belly tear open and his intestines fell out. It took one year in the hospital and one more year of physical therapy after which he volunteered for a second tour in Iraq.
In addition to this menu of physical injury, he also had PTSD which should surprise no one. There are probably another 1 million combat Veterans with PTSD which will never subside. This hidden injury frequently jumps out on him. For immediate relief, he would drink up to 5 shots of whiskey. This doesn’t help much either. PTSD never goes away.
He did get to college and graduated. But one time, driving down the road he was hit by another attack. He was taken to a psychiatric hospital and this ended his military career.
His name is Damon T. Armeni, US Army Major.
He writes a statement in the Times, “I feel an obligation to tell my story because so many others are suffering as well. Americans must know that the scars from PTSD are real and more painful than those caused by bullets or shrapnel.”
His final statement is, “Helping a wounded Veteran may save a life. We are American soldiers and we never leave anyone behind.”
Another story in the Times called, “A Soldier’s War on Pain” May 11 2014, was about Sgt. Shane Savage, which in some ways may be worse than Major Armeni’s problems.
On Sept 3 2010, in Kandahar (Afghanistan), his truck was blown apart by a bomb. His head hit the ceiling so hard his helmet cracked. His left foot was pinned against the dashboard, crushing 24 bones.
He came home 8 days later with severe concussion, PTSD and chronic pain. His doctors gave him powerful narcotic pain killers, this was necessary but caused addiction, dependence, and despair.
One time he went to the bathroom and started swallowing narcotic pills by the handful. His wife stopped him and saved his life.
He was given Hydrocodone (Vicodin) Methadone, and Oxycodone. The use of these medications has soared in recent years despite 16,000 overdose deaths.
During this time, at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington DC, 80% of injured patients were given these opiates. It has since dropped to 10%.
Sgt Savage did survive his injuries and mistreatment and was deployed again to his 4th and 5th tours.
During this time, he was prescribed 12 different types of drugs. He was on pain meds, narcotics, anti-depressants, Concerta for ADHD (?), and anti-tremor meds from the above drugs.
A month after he returned home, he heard abot his replacement to Afghanistan. He was blown to bits by a roadside bomb. The Sgt went home and cried for two days. He tried to kill himself with narcotic pills.
He spent several weeks in a psychiatric hospital and was given alternate treatments which calmed him down.
For three years, Sgt Savage was treated for his smashed foot. All treatments failed. He was up to 300 mg of Morphine a day, which is about 10x the normal dose.
He started a non-drug program which entailed taking care of and riding a horse, in other words, keeping busy, which is the BEST therapy for PTSD.
He eventually had to have his destroyed foot amputated.
These are just two examples of the million or so Veterans with PTSD and serious physical problems. These Veterans are getting minimal medical help from the military and the VA.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA COULD HAVE SAVED THESE VETERANS YEARS OF PAIN AND TURMOIL.
There is still hope.

Ukraine agrees to talks on Moscow-backed plan for eastern regions

The Ukrainian government has agreed to launch discussions on giving more powers to the regions under a peace plan brokered by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) – a roadmap backed by Moscow but regarded with scepticism by Kiev.
Ukraine's prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, is to chair the first in a series of meetings that will include national MPs, government figures and regional officials in line with proposals drafted by the OSCE – a transatlantic security and rights group that includes Russia and the US.
A solution to the crisis in east Ukraine had seemed remote on Tuesday, when six Ukrainian army servicemen were killed in an ambush by rebels and attempts to get Kiev and the armed separatists to negotiate came to nothing.
Ukraine's defence ministry released a statement saying six of its soldiers had been killed and a further eight wounded during an ambush outside the town of Kramatorsk, in Donetsk region. The attackers used grenade launchers and automatic weapons to fire at the Ukrainian column, hitting an armoured personnel carrier.
More than 50 people have died in Donetsk since Kiev began its "anti-terrorism operation" in the area, but Tuesday's attack represents the largest loss of life for the Ukrainian army in a single incident.
The de facto separatist government in Donetsk repeated on Tuesday lunchtime that the Ukrainian army was considered to be an "occupying force", and the ambush appeared to be a bloody restatement of their case.
The "Donetsk People's Republic" was proclaimed on Monday, after a hastily arranged referendum resulted in nearly 90% of votes in favour of state sovereignty. Critics have pointed out that there were no observers and that most of those who remain loyal to Kiev simply stayed at home. Nevertheless, the region announced independence and immediately appealed to Russia to accept it as a new region.
The Ukrainian government and western powers have rejected the referendum as a sham.
In Brussels on Tuesday, Yatsenyuk thanked the OSCE for its plan but said Ukraine had its own proposals for ending the crisis and that the people of his country should settle the issue themselves. He disclosed no details of that plan.
The self-proclaimed Donetsk republic took its first tentative steps on the international stage on Tuesday, imposing sanctions on three individuals – the US president, Barack Obama, the German chancellor, Angela Merkel and the EU foreign affairs chief, Catherine Ashton – who are banned from entering the territory as well as flying over it. The reason given is that they support the Kiev government's operation's against armed separatists in the east of the country.
In a document, the separatists also gave David Cameron a sharp warning, saying: "PS British prime minister David Cameron is on a provisional list (without the sanctions being enforced in practice) and is advised to think carefully about his attitude to the Kiev junta, especially given the traditional good relations between Britain and the Donbas region."
Donetsk was founded by a Welshman, John Hughes, in the 1870s, and for a time the city even bore his name.

Today anti-Minority campaigns are rampant in Sri Lanka, and the responsible religio-political leaders remain silent. Thus, it is pivotal to understand the rudimentary political ground realities in the island. Hence, to understand this dilemma of violent non-state-actors aggressive role towards minority, and the given response of political representatives of Muslim community is much fitting to focus. The political behavior of SLMC is extraordinarily significant in today’s Sri Lankan politics, since SLMCs silence over rising Sinhala Buddhists fundamental behavior and attacks against minority religions escalating greater than ever on daily basis. Today, the Muslim and Christian minority (previously Tamils) concern in Sri Lanka has become a discourse and the paradigm-shift has taken place once again in the hearts and minds of Muslims in Sri Lanka. Apparently, Muslims are puzzled, having no notion with whom to tie hands and bandwagon in absence of a strong anti-status-quo. Unlike demised SLMC supremo, Mr. Ashraff, the current party leadership has no understanding what realpolitik is (Not disregarding moral or principals by realpolitik). Therefore, it is important to observe the role and political behavior of SLMC in today’s politics, as the party claims to defend the Muslims course in the island. While on the other hand, being an ally of President Mahinda Rajapakse led ruling autocratic regime the Muslim Congress is bound to speak and raise voice against the well-architectured anti-Muslims campaignproliferated by Jathika Hela Urumaya, Bodu Bala Sena, Ravana Balaya and other anti-Muslim elements.

TRC informs ISPs to block 'Sri Lanka Mirror'

Internet Service Providers in Sri Lanka have blocked direct access to our website - 'Sri Lanka Mirror'.
SLM B 410px 03-12-13The site has been blocked since this morning (May 12) and on inquiring from the ISPs they have informed us the website has been blocked after the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) informed them to do so.
Though attempts were made to contact the Director General of the TRC - Anusha Palpita on this regard, we were informed by his secretary that Mr. Palpita was currently overseas and would be returning on May 17.
Accordingly, we have directed a formal correspondence to him with copies forwarded to the President, Opposition Leader, Minister of Media - Keheliya Rambukwella and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
A copy of this letter is shown below.
This is not the first time Sri Lanka Mirror has faced such a situation.
On November 05, 2011, we were suddenly blocked by the ISPs of the country on the regulations of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC).
TRC---SLM-block-ok-okHowever, we legally challenged this measure and on Dec 15 2011, the Supreme Court ordered to lift the access control imposed on the website.
Afterwards, 'Sri Lanka Mirror' obtained a license as a registered news website from the Ministry of Mass Media and Information in accordance to regulations introduced in 2012.
On June 29th, 2012, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) raided our office located on No. 71, Ferry Road, Ethul Kotte, Colombo, arresting five journalists (namely Srilankamirror editor Kelum Shivantha, photographer Ajith Seneviratne, journalists Shiranthani Manawadu, Himashi Karunaratne and Tharindu Rajapakse) and office assistant R.W. Premawathi.
In addition, Subhash Jayawardena and Siddique Kariyappar - two journalists of srilankaxnews.com - which was functioning from a different storey of the same building were arrested as well.
Ms. Premawathie was released later in the night while the others were released on police bail on June 30.
They were charged of violating Articles 115, 188 and 120 of the Penal Code. However, by then, the Article 118 was already nullified by the Amendment Act No. 12 of 2002.
On September 18, 2013, Colombo additional magistrate Prasanna Alwis ordered the release of Sri Lanka Mirror and Srilankaxnews journalists, until such time notice is issued on them to appear before the court again.
However, the arrested staff of Sri Lanka Mirror and Srilankaxnews filed Fundamental Rights petitions citing that their right to freedom of expression and to engage in a profession of their choice in accordance with clauses 13-1, 14-1(A) and 14-1(G) of the constitution have been violated.
The FR petitions are still being heard in the Supreme Court.
Government notice announces acquisition in Vavuniya
13 May 2014
A notice was put up in Vavuniya last month, announcing the acquisition of 20 acres for “public use”, reported The Social Architects.

Government notice announces acquisition in Vavuniya | Tamil News | Scoop.itThe notice, printed in Tamil and Sinhala, inaccurately states that the owners of the land cannot be identified, although the original inhabitants of the area are officially recognised as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and have consistently requested resettlement.

The land was orginially taken in 1997 and was used as a check point during the cease fire, acting as the de-facto border between the LTTE controlled area and the Sri Lankan military controlled area.

Colombo accelerates genocidal land grab after Geneva resolution

The occupying military of genocidal Sri Lanka is seizing further 186 acres of coastal lands for the militarisation of the resourceful coastal stretch in the Jaffna peninsula, reveal notices issued by the Divisional Secretary of Valikaamam North. In the meantime, informed sources in Colombo told TamilNet on Monday that the SLFP parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksas, who is the son of the SL president Mahinda Rajapaksa, has also taken over a large area for corporate exploitation between KKS and Keerimalai. All ‘official’ exchanges have taken place secretely in Colombo for the transfer of lands. The gencoidal land grab is accelerated at the strategic coastal locations in North and East as there was no international condemnation on the structural genocide taking place in the North and East of the island.

Keerimalai land grab
Keerimalai land grabAt the same time, ‘Patali’ Champika Ranawaka, the extremist Buddhist Monk Party (JHU) minister of ‘Technolology, Research and Atomic Energy’ has also been involved in acquiring the coastal stretch from Sinhalicised ‘Sacred Zone’ of Thiruvadi-nilai towards KKS Harbour, the sources in Colombo told TamilNet.

The SL military and the military-run civil apparatus in both the North and East are also suppressing the voices against genocidal land grab in Valikaamam North and in Champoor in the East.

The divisional secretary of Valikaamam North DS division has issued two notices, consisting 183 acres and 3 acres each at Nakuleasvaram (J226 GS area) in Keerimalai where the SL Navy is expanding its cantonment.

Earlier, there have also been reports of Sinhala traders acquiring quarry lands near KKS Harbour. The quarrying of limestone has already portended the possibility of seawater coming inside and polluting the entire groundwater table of the peninsula

More than 6,300 acres of lands have been already seized in Valikaamam North for the transformation of former High Security Zone.

The Tamil National Alliance and legal experts of the civil society in Jaffna have filed legal suits against the approrpriation of the lands in Jaffna and Trincomalee. The TNA has again vowed to approach the SL courts on the latest land grab in Keeri-malai.

There will be no justice through the SL judiciary which has already been used to divide the North and East by the SL State. The SL judiciary has also been further compromised by the ruling Rajapaksa government.

THE WAR THAT WASN’T LIVE

SRI LANKA DECLARED VICTORY IN ITS WAR AGAINST THE TAMIL TIGERS FIVE YEARS AGO—BUT THERE’S A LOT COLOMBO HAS TO ANSWER FOR.
AFP BY FRANCES HARRISON.-MAY 13 2014
It’s been five years since the civil war in Sri Lanka was declared over, but P. J. still can’t escape the images of horror even in his sleep: “I dream of fleeing, of being surrounded by the Army, of dead bodies and people suffering. It all comes back to me. My mind is stuck at the end of the war and I can’t move on.”

(Lanka-e-News- 13.May.2014, 7.00PM) Even as Indian official information service revealed that the Pakistan High Commission office in Sri Lanka and an official of the Sri Lanka (SL) government jointly were responsible for the attacks launched on the US and Israel consulates on the Indian soil, the SL ruling regime had got down a Pakistan war naval vessel to the Colombo harbour.

The Pakistan war ship PNS SHAMSHEER that is arriving today on a 3 day tour is a sophisticated Pakistan naval ship of the ‘sword’ category made in Zhonghua Shipyard Shanghai, China. The captain of the vessel is Pakistan’s naval commanding officer, Rashed Zafar. He is not only a specialist in wars but also an electronic specialist.

After the arrest of the Sri Lankan Sakeer Hussain a resident of Kandy who had been employed by the Pakistan High commission in SL to launch terrorist attacks on Indian soil , copious information have come to light . Based on this , a most leading newspaper Times of India accused in its report that, SL is now a hub for terrorist activity.

A day after this report, India while beefing up its naval security detail in the Sri Lankan territorial waters said, this measure is being taken to preclude the terrorists who are moving into India from SL. Just a day after this security beef up, 30 SL fishermen and a craft were taken into custody in India ,and the following day a further 11 fishermen were arrested by Indian aunthorities.

The haul of fish of all these fishermen were put on auction , and the fishermen were remanded in India. Despite the fact that within so short a period , the India- SL ties were breaking down swiftly and drastically , the Rajapakse regime uncaringly and unthinkingly had deemed it right to get down a sophisticated naval war ship of Pakistan at this crucial juncture. Apparently , the ruling regime is trying to take up a tough guy stance before India, ‘ Yes, we shall send terrorists against you , what are you going to say?’ seems to be the regime’s attitude.

Jaffna University: In the Shadow Of War And Peace On A War-Footing

“Early in the week beginning on 5th May, events bearing on the anniversary of the end of the war on 18th May followed in quick succession. The Registrar sent out letters announcing the closure of the University from 16th to 20th May with no explanation. On the 7th leaflets were posted on the University premises making death threats against professors who are allegedly guiding students to support terrorism and student leaders of just the Arts and Science faculties and the leader of the University Student’s Union. The academics threatened are Prof. Sivanathan, Dean of Arts, and Mr. Rasakumaran, Head of the English Language Teaching Centre, and the leader of the University Teachers’ Association. The same day, Major General Udaya Perera invited university officials, including the Vice Chancellor, deans, and student leaders, for discussions the following day, 8th, where they were garlanded, feasted and flattered with dancers and singers. General Perera told them very politely that no observance in the University would be permitted on the 18th, as any observance would amount to extolling the late LTTE leader Prabhakaran and would thus count as an inducement to terrorism. SSP Jaffna told the Sunday Times (11th May),’Any persons trying to hoist black flags, distribute leaflets or put up posters will be Considered supporting of terrorism and such persons will be taken into custody under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.’ says the Jaffna University Science Teachers’ Association.
