Claims by Russian president to NSA whistleblower in TV show will be treated with scepticism by western intelligence officials

President Vladimir Putin has told the National Security Agency whistleblower, Edward Snowden, that Russia is not carrying out mass surveillance programmes of the kind Snowden exposed in the US.

Snowden made a video-link appearance during Putin's marathon televised question and answer session to ask the president about Russia's attitude to mass surveillance.

Snowden asked: "Does Russia intercept or store or analyse the communication of millions of individuals?" He went on to ask whether increasing the effectiveness of internal security systems could ever justify such actions.

To applause from the studio audience, Putin responded: "Mr Snowden you are a former agent, a spy, I used to work for a intelligence service, we are going to talk the same language."

He said Russia did not have a comparable programme, stating: "Our agents are controlled by law. You have to get court permission to put an individual under surveillance. We don't have mass permission, and our law makes it impossible for that kind of mass permission to exist."

He said he was aware that "criminals and terrorists" relied on this kind of interception, and that their actions demanded a response from the security services. "We have to use technical means to respond to their crimes, including those of a terrorist nature, we do have some efforts like that. We don't have a mass control. I hope we don't do that," he said.

"We don't have as much money as they do in the US," he added.

Putin's claims will be treated with a high degree of scepticism by western intelligence officials. With China, they regard Russia as the biggest culprits in terms of cyber espionage and cyber theft – which is undertaken by both countries on an industrial scale.

The Guardian has reported how Russia is upgrading an electronic surveillance system known as Sorm, which is capable of capturing telephone communications, intercepting internet traffic and storing data on subscribers including actual recordings and locations.

While Russia may not have some of the technical capabilities that have been perfected by the National Security Agency and GCHQ, many of the most complicated pieces of malware that have been discovered on the internet over the last few years have had their origins in Russia – which have themselves been capable of sucking up vast amounts of information, undetected, for years.

US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal has held a discussion on Sri Lanka with former Norwegian Minister and one-time special envoy for Sri Lanka, Erik Solheim.

Solheim is continuing to follow the developments in Sri Lanka.

The meeting between Biswal and Solheim was reported following their tweets about it.

Biswal has reportedly said she appreciated the chance to discuss Sri Lanka.

Solheim has said he was impressed with Biswal after the meeting adding that the US was playing a crucial role in supporting democracy and the rights of all communities in Sri Lanka.
The meeting takes plays following the adoption of a US backed resolution on Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) calling for an international investigation into Sri Lanka.

அங்கிருந்து வந்ததும் எனது மகள் ஒரே சோகமாய் அமர்ந்திருப்பாள். அவளது தொலைபேசிக்கு ஒரே அழைப்பு வரும். அதை அவள் கட் பண்ணுவாள். இந் நிலையில் அவளிடம் நடந்தவற்றை விசாரித்தேன். அப்போது தான் அவள் கூறிய கருத்துக்கள் எனக்கு அதிர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தியது. அங்கிருந்த உதவிப் பாதிரியார் ஆன திருச்செல்வம் குயின்றன் பெர்னாண்டோ என்பவர் தன்னை காதலிக்குமாறு எனது மகளை கேட்டுள்ளார். அதற்கு அவள் மறுப்புத் தெரிவிக்க எங்க போனாலும் என்னை மறக்க கூடாது என்னுடன் தொடர்பில இருக்கணும் எனக் கூறியதுடன் மேலே உள்ள தனது றூமுக்கும் வருமாறு உதவிப் பாதிரியார் நிக்சன் வற்புறுத்தியுள்ளார். “இதனை வெளியே யாரிடமும் சொல்லக் கூடாது, சொன்னால் உன்னைப்பற்றி கூடாமல் சொல்லுவன்” என மிரட்டியுள்ளார்.         மேலும்..            

Democracy And The Change Of Government

The stoutest defender of any government will grant that periodic renewal is good; universities recycle Deanships and companies CEOs. There is a reason for term limits though none can guarantee the next will be better. Term limits are imposed because fresh air brings vigour. It was good for Thatcher to go after long at the helm; I don’t like Narendra Modi but it will be good for Congress to take a back seat for a while.

It will be good for Gota-Mahinda to go. Should this team to hang on for, 18, 24 or 30 years like Robert Mugabe or Bashar al-Assad? Enough is enough of Lanka’s ruling alliance after nearly 20 years in office.  Nobody can guarantee that the next person, if the Executive Presidency is not scrapped, (Ranil,Karu, Fonseka or Anura Kumara) will shine and who is best is another discussion. But now it is time for spring cleaning.  This is my minimalist argument.

I will now go beyond minimalism to persuade you that, in any case, this government is bad. Looking back over the last half-century, isn’t this Gotabaya-Mahinda UPFA regime the worst in our post-independence history on many counts?  Forget the Tamils; I am making this assertion on behalf of the country at large. There has always been corruption, sometimes horrific, sometimes less intense; there has always been encroachment on democratic rights by the state. But never in our history has a regime been so corrupt at all levels and across the board (Cabinet, Provincial and personal hangers on) and never has profiting from or condoning the drug trade reached so far up. Not even in two periods of state repression, 1971 and the dark days of Premadasa’s slaughter of thousands of youth, was there a purposeful attempt to lay the groundwork for dictatorship.

I have never heard a moral case against changing the Rajapake regime; what I have heard is that even if it be desirable, it is difficult to achieve given Rajapakse’s post-war approbation and Ranil’s congenital drawbacks.   Let’s take it in two steps; if the argument is that Mahinda is a strong candidate (though not so strong after the PC elections), I do not contest it. If it is said that Lanka needs to get rid of this regime, but it’s a tough fight, I agree.

புதியவன் பத்திரிக்கையின் ஆசிரியர் அரசியல் வாதி ஒருவரினால் அச்சுறுத்தப்பட்டதோடு குறித்த அலுவலகத்தை சேதப்படுத்துவதாக அச்சுறுத்தியமை தொடர்பாக மன்னார் பொலிஸ் நிலையத்தில் முறைப்பாடு செய்தும் இது வரை மன்னார் பொலிஸார் எவ்வித நடவடிக்கைகளும் மேற்கொள்ளவில்லை என அமன் ஆசிரியர் வி.எஸ்.சிவகரன் தெரிவித்தார்.

இது தொடர்பாக நேற்று(14) ஜனாதிபதிக்கு கடிதம் ஒன்றை அனுப்பி வைத்துள்ளதாக அவர் தெரிவித்தார்.

குறித்த கடிதத்தில் மேலும் குறிப்பிடுகையில்,,,,,  இலங்கையில் சட்டத்தின் ஆட்சி நடைபெறுகின்றதா?ஊடக சுதந்திரத்தை நசுக்கும் ஆட்சியாளர்கள்.

ஊடக சுதந்திரத்தை நசுக்குவதும்,சட்ட நிர்வாகத்தின் அரசியல் மயமாக்களும் தான் தொடர்ந்தும் இலங்கையில் இடம் பெறுகின்றது.

மன்னாரில் இருந்து வெளி வரும் புதியவன் நாழிதழ் அலுவலகத்தை தாக்குவேன் ,அதன் ஆசிரியருக்கு கொலை அச்சுறுத்தல் என்பனவற்றை நேரில் சென்று குண்டர்கள் சகிதம் ஊடகத்துரைக்கு சவால் விடுத்த ஐக்கிய மக்கள் சுதந்திர முன்னனியின் வடமாகாண சபை உறுப்பினர் றிப்கான் பதியுதின் தொடர்பாக கடந்த 10-4-2014 அன்று மாலை 5.45 மணிக்கு மன்னார் பொலிஸ் நிலையத்தில் முறைப்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டது.(முறைப்பாட்டு இலக்கம்-87/9)ஆனால் 5 நாட்கள் கடந்துள்ள நிலையிலும் இது வரை விசாரிக்கப்படவில்லை.

குற்றவியல் குற்றமான (கிருமினல்) கொலை அச்சுறுத்தலுக்கு பொலிஸ் திணைக்களம் இது வரை நடவடிக்கை எடுக்காதது ஏன் ?48 மணி நேர நியம முறையும்,கிருமினல் குற்றங்களுக்கு உடனடி நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டிய விதி முறையும் இலங்கை சட்டத்தில் ஆளும் கட்சி அரசியல் வாதிகளுக்கு விலக்களித்துள்ளீர்களா? என்கின்ற சந்தேகம் எழுகின்றது.

அல்லது ஊடகத்துறையை நசுக்க வேண்டும் என்பது அரசாங்கத்தின் நிகழ்ச்சி நிரலா? இலங்கை பொலிஸ் திணைக்களத்தின் சட்டம் சாமாணியர்களுக்கு மட்டுமா?  ஊடகத்துறைக்கே இந்த நிலை என்றால் நீதியின் பரிபாலனத்தில் இலங்கையில் சட்ட ஆட்சி நடைபெறுகின்றதா? எனும் ஐயம் சாதாரண பொது மக்கள் மத்தியில் எழுகின்றது.

எனவே ஊடக சுதந்திரத்தை மீறும் இந்த சனநாயக படுகொலைக்கு தங்கள் அதிகாரத்தின் கீழ் உள்ள பொலிஸ் திணைக்களததின் அசமந்தப்போக்கிற்கு காரணம் என்ன? அல்லது ஆளும் கட்சிக்கு சார்பாக மட்டும் தான் அரச நிர்வாகம் இயங்கும் என்பது எழுதப்படாத விதியா?இலங்கையிலே ஊடகச்சுதந்திரத்தை பேணுவதற்கும்,சுய பாதுகாப்பிற்கும் பொறுப்புக்கூறுவது யார்?எனவே உங்கள் அரசியல் வாதிகளையும்,பொலிஸ் திணைக்களத்தையும் நேர்மையாக இயங்க நடவடிக்கை எடுப்பிர்களா? எனக்கேட்டுக்கொள்ளுகின்றோம்.என குறித்த கடிதத்தில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.

The journalist from “Lakbima” who wrote a caption to a photograph of the Defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse’s wife, Ayoma Rajapakse, has been dismissed from his service. Moreover, the chief editor of “Lakbima” paper, Saman Wagaarachchi has been summoned by the CID and questioned at length.

The photograph depicted Ayoma Rajapakse purchasing some goods from a stall at the New Year fair organized by the “seva vanitha” unit of the department of civil defence. It was published on the 8^th page in the April 7 edition of the paper with the caption “They aren’t stolen money, are they?” A correction was included on the April 8 edition of the paper stating that it had been a mistake and apologizing for the incident.

However it has been reported that threats have been made saying that the apology is not sufficient and demanding the removal of the sub-editor who approved the above caption. As a result, on the 9^th of April, the paper carried another apology on its front page which also mentioned that the sub-editor concerned has been removed from his position under the accusation of irresponsible conduct.

யாழ்ப்பாணம் வடமராட்சிப் பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்த சுயாதீன ஊடகவியலாளரான சிவஞானம் செல்வதீபன்  இனந்தெரியாத சிலரால் தாக்கப்பட்டு படுகாயமடைந்த சம்பவம் தொடர்பில் கடும் கண்டனத்தைத் தெரிவித்துள்ள இலங்கைத் தமிழ் ஊடகவியலாளர் ஒன்றியம், இச்சம்பவம் குறித்து பொலிஸார் உரிய விசாரணைகளை நடத்தி, குற்றவாளிகளை சட்டத்தின் முன் நிறுத்த வேண்டும் எனக் கோரிக்கை விடுத்துள்ளது.
ஊடகவியலாளர் செல்வதீபன் யாழ்ப்பாணம் புறாப்பொறுக்கியில்  வைத்து இனம் தெரியாத இருவரால் வழிமறிக்கப்பட்டு  விசாரிக்கப்பட்ட பின்னர் இரும்புக்கம்பியினால் தாக்கப்பட்டு சிகிச்சைக்காக மந்திகை வைத்திய சாலையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள சம்பவம் குறித்து வெளியிட்டுள்ள அறிக்கையிலேயே இலங்கைத் தமிழ் ஊடகவியலாளர் ஒன்றியத்தின் செயலாளர் கே.ஜெயேந்திரன் இவ்வாறு தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
வடக்கில் ஊடகவியலாளர்கள் மீது தாக்குதல் நடத்தப்படுவதும், அச்சுறுத்தல் விடுக்கப்படுவதும் வழமையான சம்பவங்களாகிவிட்ட நிலையே இன்று காணப்படுகிறது. இவ்வாறான சம்பவங்களானது ஊடக சுதந்திரத்துக்கு அச்சுறுத்தலாக அமைவதால் இவ்வாறான சம்பவங்கள் இனிமேலும் இடம்பெறாதிருப்பதை உறுதிப்படுத்த அரசாங்கம் உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் எனவும் வலியுறுத்தியிருக்கின்றார்.

இது தொடர்பான அவ்வறிக்கையில் மேலும் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள தாவது:
"புதுவருட தினமான திங்கட்கிழமை இரவு எட்டு மணியளவில் ஊடகவியலாளரான செல்வதீபன் மோட்டார் சைக்கிளில் சென்றுகொண்டிருந்த போது வழிமறித்துத் தாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளார். ஹெட் லைட் இல்லாமல் மோட்டார் சைக்கிள்களில் செல்வதீபனின் மோட்டார் சைக்கிளைப் பின்தொடர்ந்து வந்த சிலரே இவரை வழிமறித்துத் தாக்கியுள்ளனர் எனத் தெரிவிக்கப்படுகின்றது.
இவர் இரும்புக்கம்பிகளால் தாக்கப்பட்ட போதிலும், தலைக்கவசம் அணிந்திருந்தமையால் தலையில் அதிஷ்டவசமாக காயம் ஏற்படவில்லை. இருந்த போதிலும் தோளிலும், கால்களிலும் காயம் ஏற்பட்டிருப்பதாகத் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. தாக்குதல் நடத்தியவர்களிடமிருந்து தப்பியோடி பற்றைகளுக்குள் மறைந்திருந்து தப்பித்துக்கொண்டார்.

யாழ்ப்பாணத்தில் ஊடகவியலாளர்கள் மீது தாக்குதல் நடத்தப்படுவதும், ஊடகவியலாளர்களும் ஊடகங்களும் அச்சுறுத்தப்படுவதும் ஒரு வழமையான நிகழ்வாகிவிட்டது. இவ்வாறான சம்பவங்களுடன் தொடர்புள்ளவர்களை கைது செய்து சட்டத்தின் முன்பாக நிறுத்துவதற்கு அதற்குப் பொறுப்பானவர்கள் தவறிவிடுகின்றார்கள். இதனால் அச்சத்துடன் தமது பணிகளை முன்னெடுக்க வேண்டியவர்களாகவே ஊடகவியலாளர்கள் உள்ளனர்.

Alarming trend of ‘hostage taking’ by Colombo’s TID investigators: Lawyers

The military intelligence of occupying Colombo is keeping the family members of alleged suspects as hostages in detention camps irrespective of their age, gender and irrespective of any connection to those the military claims as suspects involved in the revival of the armed struggle, Colombo-based lawyers representing the victims said in a note sent to human rights defenders. The lawyers described the trend as alarming. Not only the freedom of movement, but also the freedom of having visitors in their residences is seriously affected in Mullaiththeevu and Ki’linochchi districts in particular, the lawyers said. 

Detailing the condition of those detained, the note also said that there is a heavy presence of military and intelligence units in Mullaiththeevu and Ki’linochchi districts. 

“When there are visitors to a house, the head of the household has to report to the Grama Seveka and the A.G.A and take the visitors to such officials for registration. This situation is worse than that prevailed during war time and this has caused immense fear in the people and has virtually frozen HRDs and the civil society organizations,” the note further said. 

The soldiers often enter the residences of people under the pretext of obtaining information. The lawyers say that this practice has almost become a routine operation, harassing civilians in the two districts. 

“The ordinary life is seriously affected with frequent cordon and search operations, checkpoints and arrests without reasonable suspicion.”

“Men and women who underwent rehabilitation are again directed to report to Army camps and police stations,” the lawyers said in the note. 

More than 65 people were ‘arrested’ in abduction style by the Sri Lankan military intelligence operatives who claim their identity as ‘Terrorist Investigation Division’ (TID) officers from the SL Police Department, news sources in Ki'linochchi told TamilNet. 

Only a few of them, around 8 people including a woman, have been released from the custody so far. All the eight released were from Jaffna and ‘arrested’ in Colombo. 

The TID runs various interrogation offices at various locations in addition to having an embedded presence at the police stations across the North and East.

Canada’s Suspension Of C’Wealth Funding: Sharma Disappointed

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma expressed disappointment at the Canada’s suspension of technical assistance funding but looked forward to the resumption of the contributions, says the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Issuing a statement last night Sharma recalled that Canada has a long and valued record of support for the work of the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation.

Sharma said the difficult adjustments to Commonwealth development programmes would be made, and expressed confidence that important priorities agreed by Commonwealth member states collectively can still be delivered, with results and impact for the benefit of the people of the Commonwealth in accordance with the current strategic plan.

Siddhartha Gautama, who became universally known as the sage Buddha, was born some 2,500 years ago in Nepal. He was a human being who became acutely enlightened in understanding life and explaining it in its simplicity. It is said that he once sat under a peepal tree for 40 days and nights to attain understanding and enlightenment and once he reached that stage he felt free from greed, hatred and ignorance, and enhanced by wisdom, compassion, tolerance and freedom.

This was the message he sought to promote for the remaining years of his life to his disciples.

Unfortunately over the centuries, some of Buddha’s followers or Buddhists as they are called mutated into something far removed from the sage’s messages. Theirs has become a calling of all things evil and violent. Currently there are two such strains of Buddhists who are leading a campaign against others that is devoid of any of the sage’s messages.

One group, the Ahsin Wirathu Alliance, operating out of Burma or Myanmar, is made up of bloodthirsty Buddhists who have been terrorizing and slaughtering thousands of Myanmar’s minority Rohingya Muslims. Even Aung San Suu Kyi, a leader of the Myanmar opposition and the 1991winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, dares not venture to align herself with the cause of the displaced Rohingyas for political considerations. She has thus far been protected from any criticism for the massacres going on in her country even though some question whether she is supporting the terrorist Buddhist group which is attempting to exterminate the Muslim population in Myanmar.
Another equally vicious Buddhist group in Sri Lanka, the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), has lately begun a fierce campaign against the Tamil, Muslim and Christian minorities on the island.

Last month, events in Sri Lanka took an even more disturbing turn. Ashin Wirathu Thera, leader of the 969 Movement in Myanmar, and notorious for his anti-Islam tirades which have resulted in the slaughter of thousands of Rohingya refugees was invited by his BBS counterparts in Sri Lanka to visit the island. Time magazine has correctly described Wirathu as the “Face of Buddhist Terror”.

The meeting of two terrorist Buddhist group leaders from Myanmar and Sri Lanka does not bode well for the minorities of the island of Sri Lanka. In Myanmar, the minorities have already been subjugated to the point of being completely wiped out in some areas by acts of maximum brutality. Such acts have been muted so far in Sri Lanka, but such an unholy alliance could well spell disaster for their adversaries.

When the UN’s top human rights body launched an investigation recently into Sri Lanka’s civil war and possible war crimes against the Tamil minorities based on the recommendation of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, the Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary screamed at a press conference: “We will skin the bitch alive!” This is the same individual who flew to Burma to receive a special birthday gift from Burma’s radical monk Wirathu last month.

The mindset of this terrorist group has increasingly worried many Sinhalese who make up the majority of the population in Sri Lanka and it has greatly disturbed the many minorities who have lately witnessed an increasing number of unabashed and defiant acts against their people, places of worship and businesses. This was not Buddha’s message.

With this unholy alliance between the two terror groups in the offing, the island’s minorities are wondering if it will eventually lead to the same sort of assault and slaughter of their people as the Rohingya have faced in Myanmar. This will unquestionably lead Sri Lanka to the precipice of disaster.
