LEGO Computer Keyboard

http://jkbrickworks.com/jkbw/wp-content/themes/jkbrickworks/images/header.jpgJK Brickworks
This is a fully functional computer keyboard built using LEGO parts.  Details can be seen in the video, more info below.

I actually built the first prototype for this project all the way back in 2005! You can see a picture of that original prototype in the images below. I shelved the project for a number of reasons. Mostly because I was trying to build it onto the membrane of a Microsoft Natural keyboard, and working around the various angles of the keyboard was giving me a lot of trouble.
Last year I stumbled upon an old keyboard someone was getting rid of on the side of the road (nothing like doing a little free-cycling!).  My interest was piqued again and after testing that the keyboard still worked I resurrected the project.
The biggest challenge was creating a frame that allowed the keys to be precisely spaced above the membrane. As I show in the video this was accomplished with a grid of Technic connectors and axles.
The second biggest challenge was finding appropriate printed tiles for all the symbols on a keyboard. Thankfully The LEGO Group has released all the main characters, numbers, and even a few special symbols over the years. I had to get creative with some of the keys though, which was actually quite fun. Still, there a few keys that could use some improvement.
Thankfully it is extremely easy to replace keys, so as I get inspired, or as The LEGO Group releases new printed tiles, I can easily upgrade the keys. It would also be quite easy to customize the layout, or add custom symbols to make a gaming specific layout.
The performance of the keyboard is quite good. There is a bit of flex in the Technic frame as you are using it, but this doesn’t seem to affect the performance at all. I can type just as well with this keyboard as with any other, as you can see during the introduction to the video.

International investigation a must - Jaffna Uni Students Union

11 March 2014
The Jaffna University Student’s Union has expressed disappointment in the omission of international investigation mechanisms in a proposed draft of the UN Human Rights Council resolution on Sri Lanka. In a statement released on Monday, the Union said:

Good, Bad And Ugly Of The Draft Resolution In UNHRC

Colombo TelegraphLooking at history, we see there have been political and ethnic conflicts attempting secession from aggressors. Some were successful, a few are pending and a very few had sad endings.
It is too early to consider whether the political and ethnic conflict of the Tamils in the Island of Sri Lanka has to come to an end. Of course there are many tragic and disappointing incidents which have occurred. There are many questions to be answered.
The Biafran conflict between 1967 to 1970 in the South Eastern provinces of Nigeria was a very successful case of self-proclaimed independence, supported and recognised by a few States. Unfortunately the same had a very tragic ending.
During the Presidency of General Yakubu Gowon of Nigeria, the 30 months Biafran war ended with an unconditional cease-fire. A few years ago, I met General Gowon in an international conference. During our friendly discussion, he explained that, as soon as the Biafrans declared unconditional cease-fire, he declared that “there would be no victory and no defeat”. A period of rehabilitation, reconstruction and reconciliation followed. This paved the way for the Nigerian economy to start to boom, with the country’s huge oil reserves.
Today nobody talks about Biafra and there have been no punitive mechanisms on Nigeria, especially regarding Biafra. The Nigeria-Biafra war teaches a lesson to dictators and warmongerers about making positive approaches towards a people who a state claims as their own citizens.
The Tamils in the North and East in the island of Sri Lanka have some similarities to the Biafran people.
When we talk about the present government in Sri Lanka, the majority of the people in the South say it is “Rajapaksa’s government” rather than the “Sri Lankan government”. Many are ashamed of what happened during and at the end of the war, in “Mullivaigzhal” in May 2009.                                     Read More

Sri Lanka stocks down despite foreign inflows

Reuters
COLOMBO, March 11 Tue Mar 11, 2014
(Reuters) - Sri Lankan shares fell for a second straight session on Tuesday despite foreign inflows as a proposed United Nations resolution, which may have an impact on the country's economy, dented sentiment, brokers said.
Analysts said most investors were waiting for direction ahead of voting on the resolution later this month and to assess the impact it would have on the economy and risky assets.
The main stock index fell 0.22 percent, or 13.04 points to 5,944.57.
Shares of top conglomerate John Keells Holdings PLC fell 2 percent to 225.00 rupees.
Foreign investors bought a net 69.2 million rupees worth of shares on Tuesday, extending the net foreign inflow during the last five sessions to 141 million rupees.
However, Sri Lanka has seen net selling worth 5.29 billion rupees in the last 22 sessions as some offshore funds exited, while net outflows so far in 2014 stood at 3.9 billion rupees, after net inflows of 22.88 billion rupees last year.
Sri Lanka last week hit back at a report by the U.N. human rights chief, questioning the independence of the human rights office of the U.N. after the United States asked it to investigate violations by the Sri Lankan government.
The day's turnover was 804.5 million rupees ($6.16 million), less than this year's daily average of about 980.3 million rupees.

NZ must support inquiry on Sri Lanka - Green MP

New Zealand needs to lend its support to an independent international investigation into allegations of war crimes in Sri Lanka, Green Party human rights spokesperson Jan Logie said today.

A draft resolution at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, sponsored by the United States, creates the opportunity for an international investigation into alleged war crimes. The resolution will be voted on near the end of the UN Human Rights Council session in late March. Canada, the United Kingdom and other countries have indicated they will support an international inquiry.

“The Human Rights Council session presents an opportunity for New Zealand to push for accountability and protection of human rights action in regard to the worrying situation in Sri Lanka,” Ms Logie said.

“Our representatives at the United Nations should be doing all they can to support an independent investigation into alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka

“Five years after the bloody civil war ended in Sri Lanka there has been no accountability for thousands of civilian deaths and this puts the lives of people today at risk, as well as future peace in the region.

“The Sri Lankan Government has set up a number of internal processes that have been discredited,” Ms Logie said.

“Given this was the regime in power during the final months of the civil war this seems hardly surprising.

“Those who speak out for human rights in Sri Lanka today face intimidation and abuse.

“New Zealand’s inaction in speaking out over human rights abuses last year during the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting was shameful.

“New Zealand cannot continue to bury its head over human rights issues,” Ms Logie said.

“It is vital that we speak out on behalf of those who have died in the Sri Lankan conflict and those that continue to suffer persecution.

“The people of Sri Lanka need a way forward from the trauma of the civil war.

“New Zealand is still accepting Tamil refugees under the UN quota system and they deserve to know that we are advocating on their behalf internationally.

“Countries such as New Zealand need to support the long overdue international investigation into the allegations of war crimes and abuse,” Ms Logie said.

Muslims in Musali division protest against SL military land grab

TamilNet[TamilNet, Monday, 10 March 2014, 07:28 GMT]
Muslims from Ma’richchuk-kaddi village in Musali DS division in Mannaar sat on the Puththa’lam – Mannaar Road at Maraikkaar-theevu on Sunday and demonstrated against Colombo’s seizure of their lands including their cemetery. The families, uprooted from Musali in 1990, came to Musali division to resettle from Puththa’lam after Muslim ministers aligned with Colombo government promised them resettlement. Ma’richchuk-kaddi is the border between the Northern and Northwestern Provinces.

The occupying Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) has seized 255 acres of residential and agricultural lands and the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has taken back 50 acres of lands given back to the 150 families through the divisional secretary.

SL Department of Wildlife Conservation is also involved in the seizure of their lands.

“Do we have to return to Puththa’lam again or do we get our lands back is the question,” a Muslim protester told TamilNet.

“We have been living here for around a hundred years, where do we go now,” the protester asked.

School Principal Ignores Governor’s Orders; Bans Punjabi And Makes Students Worship

March 11, 2014
Colombo TelegraphOn Monday March 3rd, 2014, two students in Grade 7 of Janadipathi Balika Vidyalaya, School Lane Nawala, were ordered to kneel down and worship the Principal of the school after they on the advice of their parents attended school in the Punjabi attire – traditional attire worn by Muslim girls in Sri Lanka, informed sources told Colombo Telegraph.
Sri-Lanka_HijabAs long ago as 1980 the Ministry of Education by a circular issued to all Zonal Directors instructed that Muslim girls must be permitted to attend school attired in their traditional Punjabi attire which comprises a white frock, a trouser and a shawl. However in recent years school authorities in several schools in Sri Lanka have objected to Muslim girls wearing the traditional dress on claims that the school is a ‘Buddhist school’. In fact the Principal of Janadipathy Balika Vidyalaya Nayana Taxila Perera is reported to have taken the same stance, that Janadipathy Balika Vidyalaya is a Buddhist school.
In 2013 a Muslim student went to the Supreme Court against the prohibition of the Punjabi dress by the School Principal and the matter was settled in the Supreme Court with the Principal being severely reprimanded for his conduct. However these interventions have had little effect in stemming the growing anti-minority and anti-Muslim sentiment in Sri Lanka.
The two students who went to school on March 3, 2014 were first asked to remove their attire by the relevant class teachers. The second student had immediately acceded to the instructions in fear of reprisal. The two girls were thereafter summoned before the Principal as one of the girls refused to remove her dress. However she too was forced to remove her trouser and shawl in the presence of staff members, parents and the Vice Principal.
This incident takes place in the context of a wider anti-Muslim attitude adopted by the School Principal Ms Perera where she had banned Muslim parents from entering the school premises attired in the abaya or the hijab. The School Principal has no such power in law to regulate the attire of parents. Thus Muslim mothers who wear the hijab are prevented from fully engaging in their children’s education as they cannot attend any school event or meeting including parents – teachers meetings.
Whilst the ban had been put in place from July 2013 on September 10, 2013 a Muslim mother went to collect her daughter from school as she was ill. However the security officers at the gate had stopped her from going further as she wore the hijab. The mother was asked to wait outside the gate and the child was handed over to her outside the school gate.
Another mother who went to school to pay the admission fee for her third child, adorned in a Hijab, was not allowed to enter the school and was instructed to make the payment either through her daughter or husband. In another incident the teachers of the school had insisted that a parent wearing a Hijab, removes it during the national anthem and the school song during the sport meet.
Due to the discrimination a group of 11 parents had lodged a complaint at the Western Province Governor Alawi Mawlana’s  office as this was a Provincial school. The parents had requested the Governor to intervene and inform the Director of the Provincial Education Department to permit them to visit the school adorned in hijab, and to permit their children to pursue their education adorned in the traditional Muslim attire in accordance with the circulars and orders of the Supreme Court.
It was only after the Governor’s office had informed the parents that the relevant instructions would be given out to the school that the children went to the school on March 3rd, 2014 and had to face the above incident.
Soon after the parents were informed of the incident that took place, the parents of two girls visited the Governor’s office and were informed that an inquiry will be held on March 6th, 2014 regarding the issue. However, when the parents went to the Governor’s office on March 6th, as instructed, they were informed by the officials that the issue has been ‘sorted’ and the Mayor of Sri Jayawardena Pura Kotte – Janaka Ranawaka had intervened and therefore no meeting or inquiry would be held.
On the following day, March 7th, 2014, a special meeting was reportedly held in the presence of the Mayor. During the meeting attended by parents, the Mayor and the Principal have instructed the parents present to sign a document urging parents to desist from wearing the hijab when entering the school with the students who would not be permitted to wear the shawl and trousers.
Certain parents of Muslim students who were present at the meeting have also reportedly agreed to send their children to attend school in a frock devoid of the shawl and trousers.

New clip ‘exposes’ Sri Lanka war crimes

Return to frontpageMEERA SRINIVASAN-: March 10, 2014
Just as countries on the U.N. Human Rights Council prepare to vote on a United States-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka, a new video clip released by British public-service television broadcaster Channel 4 has accused the Sri Lankan armed forces of having an “underlying culture of systematic brutality and sexual violence.”
Channel 4 journalist Callum Macrae’s report of the video — with a clip that is a little over six minutes long — was released late Sunday, a week after the United Nations Human Rights Council Session began in Geneva. On March 28, member countries will vote on the U.S.-sponsored resolution, possibly calling for an investigation — aided by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights — into alleged war crimes during the final phase of the Sri Lankan civil war.
Mr. Macrae’s earlier documentaries Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields and No Fire Zone: In the Killing Fields of Sri Lanka had sparked controversy around alleged war crimes and rights abuse in Sri Lanka.
On the new visual that has emerged, he said, it was unclear when the video was filmed but suggests it was at some point in the last two or three years of the war, possibly by a soldier using a mobile phone. The disturbing visuals show Sinhala-speaking, uniformed men apparently celebrating over bodies that the report identifies as those of female Tiger fighters. “Taken with all the other evidence which has emerged — and continues to emerge — this suggests a pattern which, in an army as disciplined and effective as the Sri Lankan one, means that command responsibility for these actions could be traced to the very top of the armed forces and government,” Mr. Macrae has said in a statement.
The video footage came from the British Tamil Forum — an umbrella organisation for several Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora groups based in the United Kingdom.
When contacted, Army spokesperson Ruwan Wanigasooriya denied the allegations and said that the latest video was “only an extension of Channel 4’s already well-known campaign to discredit the Sri Lankan government and armed forces.”
Brigadier Wanigasooriya also said that Channel 4 was aligned with Tamil diaspora sections that are sympathetic to the rebel Tigers, and are still espousing the separatist cause. Speaking to The Hinduover telephone from London, Mr. Macrae said he had been extraordinarily careful in having the video content authenticated.
Asked if the source of the content made him additionally sceptical, he said: “No matter where we get it from, we are very, very careful. I couldn’t be more sceptical than I am, and we have been very careful in getting the images authenticated by independent video analysts and leading forensic pathologists.”
Responding to the Sri Lankan army’s charge that Channel 4 was strategically releasing its footage to reach out to countries voting this year, Mr. Macrae said it was a “genuine, complete coincidence.”
“We got the footage recently and it took time for us to verify its authenticity. All the same, I am not ashamed at releasing it now, ahead of the UNHRC session. As a journalist, it is my job to put it out ahead of an important event,” he said.

Human Rights Groups Seek Firm Steps To Probe Lankan Genocide, War Crimes

Calling upon the Centre not to “hide” behind economic and strategic interests and to take a firm step in investigating the genocide and war crimes in Sri Lanka, human rights activists from all parts of the country have unanimously decided to garner support for the initiative in their respective States.
Calling upon the Centre not to “hide” behind economic and strategic interests and to take a firm step in investigating the genocide and war crimes in Sri Lanka, human rights activists from all parts of the country have unanimously decided to garner support for the initiative in their respective States.
The US-sponsored UNHRC resolution on the Sri Lankan war crimes in their view is ‘mild’ and hence, India should sponsor a separate resolution highlighting the demand for an independent probe into the matter.
“This is not only an issue of the Tamils’ but a serious human rights violation and with the help of human rights organisations in over 25 States, we will spread awareness so that the whole nation rises against the atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan government,” said V Suresh, national general secretary, People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL).
Speaking at a meeting in the city, PUCL State president G Saraswathi said there was a need for a pan-India outcry in support of the issue and demanded that India sponsor a substantive resolution, making an independent investigation as its pivot.  “The resolution sponsored by the US and UK does not even mention the word ‘genocide’ and is very mild. Hence, India should take the onus of bringing justice to the Eelam Tamils,” she said.
“The Sri Lankan government should not be allowed more time for reconciliation initiatives and the investigation should be started immediately. The more the delay, more the loss and manipulation of evidence,” added Suresh.
The rights watchdog also demanded that the North Eastern provinces of the island nation be de-militarised and provided with real democratic power under a federal setup.
Other demands include rehabilitation of the 90,000 war widows still living in the Tamil-dominated provinces without any livelihood  support. Saraswathy further said that over seven major human rights associations had extended support to the initiave and that  the issue would be taken up at the Conference of South Asian Countries on Genocide and War Crimes, to be held in August this year.

Tamils protest in Geneva for SL war crimes probe

protest geneevaThousands of Tamils demonstrated in Geneva on Monday to protest Sri Lanka's rejection of calls for an international probe into alleged war crimes at the end of its civil war.
Some 4,000 people, who had come from across Europe by bus and train, marched through Geneva and crowded into the square outside the United Nations' European headquarters, according to Geneva police.
The demonstrators blocked traffic through the centre of town and around the central Place des Nations, and police were forced to use pepper spray to contain the situation when protestors began pressing against the security barriers around the United Nations, police spokesman Silvain Guillaume-Gentil told AFP.
They waved red and yellow Tamil Tiger flags, posters demanding "Justice", and pictures showing victims of the alleged war crimes committed during the final stages of Sri Lanka's civil war between Tamil secessionists and the state.
The demonstration came during a key annual session of the UN Human Rights Council, which later this month will be asked to consider a US-led draft resolution calling for an international investigation into allegations that up to 40,000 Tamil civilians were killed after government forces ordered them into a no-fire zone in 2009.
Colombo has flatly rejected the draft resolution and the report by UN chief Navi Pillay on which it was based as an "unwarranted interference", and President Mahinda Rajapakse has accused Washington of treating Colombo like Muhammad Ali's "punching bag".
Sri Lanka has previously said it needs more time to address issues of accountability and reconciliation after ending the 37-year conflict, which according to UN estimates claimed at least 100,000 lives.
British Tamils gather cross party support for international investigation

10 March 2014
British Tamils met with parliamentarians from various political parties across the country this week, as they gathered support for accountability in Sri Lanka, calling on British Prime Minister David Cameron to live up to his pledge of ensuring a credible international investigation.

Members of the British Tamils Forum met with Paul Blomfield Labour MP for Sheffield, who personally committed to ensuring the matter is brought to the attention of the Prime Minister stating,

“I’m shocked that the Prime Minister having given a very clear commitment to use all of Britain’s diplomatic efforts to ensure that there is a independent internationally led investigation, has not seen that through, so I’ll be taking that issue up directly with the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary.”

Another British Tamil constituent who wrote to Home Secretary Theresa May told the Tamil Guardian that he received a reply from the Home Secretary stating,

“The Foreign Secretary has now confirmed that the UK is pursuing this issue actively at the UN Human Rights Council in order to secure an international inquiry of the type recommended by the UN High Commissioner.”

“I hope this is useful in providing reassurance that the UK is playing a leading role in calling for an international inquiry. If we do not see progress in the near future then I will of course be happy to raise the matter with the Foreign Secretary on your behalf.”
Other MPs who met with Tamil constituents this week discussing the issue of a international investigation in Sri Lanka include Labour MP for Edmonton Andy Love, Conservative MP for High Wycombe Steve Baker and Sarah Champion Labour MP for Rotherham.

British Tamil constituents also met with Labour Member of Parliament for East Ham Stephen Timms, who stated,

I am not sure that the UN resolution that has been drafted fully implements that commitment which the PM David Cameron made, and I shall be pressing him along with others on the Labour party benches in the House of Commons to ensure that that commitment which he made is fully delivered and that Britain does press wholeheartedly for that full international independent credible inquiry, without which nobody will be satisfied that we have got to the bottom of what really happened.”

Anti-Muslim Rhetoric In Sri Lanka Similar To Myanmar’s

Colombo Telegraph
March 11, 2014
An international panel of experts concluded in Budapest last week that the anti-Muslim rhetoric in Sri Lanka is similar to that of Myanmar where hundreds of Rohingya Muslims are reported to have perished in deadly anti-Muslim clashes.
Gnanasara and WirathuHeld at the Central European University’s School of Public policy in Budapest, the panel on “Buddhist Fury: violence against Muslims in Sri Lanka and Myanmar” sought to answer questions on conflict solution, develop policy ideas and share news on the current situation in both countries, with a purpose of releasing a policy paper to help deal with anti-Muslim hatred.
“Although no one has died in anti-Muslim violence in Sri Lanka, speakers at the March 6 discussion said that the language of hatred is similar to that in Myanmar where hundreds of Rohingya Muslims are reported to have lost their lives,” a Turkish news site reported.
The report said that the audience heard that although Muslims make up just 9 percent of Sri Lanka’s population, Buddhists, who number around 70 percent, appear to fear an increase in their population – fears which have also been expressed in Myanmar.
“But whereas violence in Myanmar has led to hundreds of deaths, attacks in Sri Lanka have been limited to mosques and the removal of Muslim women’s headscarves, with a few people injured,” the report on the panel said.
The conclusions come days afterForeign Policy Magazine published Colombo Telegraph’s picture of Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Galagoda Atte Gnanasara receiving a gift from Burma’s hardline monk Ashin Wirathu who founded the 969 movement, under the title “This is the modern axis of Buddhist Hate
Buddhist mobs in Myanmar have killed more than 200 Muslims and forced more than 150,000 people, mostly Muslims, from their homes. Many Rohingya Muslims now live in large camps in Sittwe, the capital of the Rakhine State in Western Myanmar.
Wirathu has denied any role in the violence, but critics have said that his anti-Muslim preaching has helped to inspire it. Like Bodu Bala Sena, he has criticized the halal slaughter method, and told Buddhists not to do business with Muslims, urging them to seize their land.

President-Hakeem clash, a hoax!

Tuesday, 11 March 2014
mr hakeem exclusiveThe so-called clash between the president and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem is in fact a publicity stunt invented through the media that is being carried out in mutual understanding between the two, a senior government minister told ‘Lanka News Web.’
Every time a provincial council election is at hand - like in the cases of polls for Eastern, Uva, Northwestern and Central PCs – such publicity stunts had taken place, noted the minister, adding the main objective of this particular campaign is to keep the votes of the Muslims who are disheartened with the government with the SLMC, without letting them vote for the UNP. To achieve that objective, the President’s Media Unit has invented this clash and is using the media to promote it, he said.
Anyhow, Hakeem has promised to the president to add up the seats that will be gained by the SLMC to the UPFA once the results of the March 29 election are announced.
The senior minister said further that some members of the SLMC high command and several government officials are involved in this campaign.
This campaign tries to overshadow the popular UNP candidate from Colombo district Mujibur Rahman. Well knowing that it cannot win the Colombo urban area, the government is using such gimmicks to prevent the UNP from attracting Muslim votes, and to minimize Muslim votes for the main opposition party. When Hirunika Premachandra, Colombo Central co-organizer, had gone to her electorate for her campaign work, Muslim voters had driven her away, saying “Do your campaign in Kolonnawa.” She has complained to the president about this. The so-called clash between the president and minister Hakeem has been invented two weeks ago in such a background.

Sexist Jokes: What Namal And Anarkali Fail To Grasp

Colombo TelegraphIn Canada, the University of Ottawa’s men’s hockey team and its coaches stand suspended, while an investigation into a sexual assault complaint is completed.  Just days before the alleged assault was made public, a female student of the university accused five male student leaders of the university of conducting sexually explicit conversations about her on Facebook.
Even as four of those men attempted to silence the female student by threatening legal action, press reports state that two of the men have stepped down from their leadership positions at the university.
Of late, there have been many media reports of sexually charged chants  glorifying underage sex at some Canadian universities during frosh week. University authorities have stepped in to curb this trend, suspending student leaders and even having them take sensitivity training.

Look at what I found 😃
Women have made many inroads in the fields of employment and education. Yet, even as the struggle to be accepted as equals continues, the biggest hurdle faced, is the sexual objectification of women.
Following the horrific rape and subsequent death of a young woman in Delhi in 2012, India tightened its laws against sexual predators, however, women and children are raped and otherwise sexually exploited almost daily. The story is the same in most other countries.                                                                      Read More
