New research suggests geo-engineering unlikely to cool Earth

‘Now there’s no safety net’

Cape Breton PostGwynne Dyer- January 16, 2014
There’s bad news on the climate front. It was already clear that we are very likely to break through all the "do not exceed" limits and go into runaway warming later this century, because greenhouse emissions have not dropped, are not dropping and probably will not drop.
We did have a fallback position, which was to counter the warming by geo-engineering — but now the leading technique for geo-engineering also looks like it will not work.
In a paper published this month in the journal Environmental Research Letters, three researchers at Reading University in England have shown that trying to cool the planet by putting large amounts of sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere would lead to a 30 per cent decline in rainfall in most of the tropics. That would mean permanent drought conditions in countries like Indonesia, and millions would starve.
Starvation is the main impact that higher average global temperatures will have on human beings, as they will cause a big loss in food production, particularly in the tropics and subtropics. But the standard assumption was that there would still be as much rain in the tropics as before; maybe even too much rain, as the heat would mean higher rates of evaporation and more powerful tropical storms.
What researchers Angus Ferraro, Ellie Highwood and Andrew Charlton-Perez have done is to use several climate model simulations to examine the effect of geo-engineering on the tropical overturning circulation. This circulation is largely responsible for lifting water vapour that has evaporated at the surface high enough up into the atmosphere that it turns back into water droplets and falls as rain. If the circulation gets weaker, so does the rainfall.
Putting sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere to cut the amount of incoming sunlight and reduce heating at the surface was first suggested by Paul Crutzen, a Nobel Prize-winning atmospheric chemist, in 2006. At that time, talking about geo-engineering was taboo among scientists, because they feared that if the general public knew that the heating could be held down that way, they’d stop trying to curb their greenhouse gas emissions.
Crutzen violated the taboo because countries and people were not cutting their emissions, and there was no reasonable prospect that they would (this is still largely the case, by the way). So the world definitely needed a plan B if we did not want to see a planet that is hotter by four degrees Celsius by the end of the century.
Crutzen pointed out that large volcanoes, when they explode, put substantial amounts of sulphur dioxide gas into the stratosphere. That causes significant cooling at the surface for one or two years, until it all comes down again — and it does no apparent harm in the process. The last big volcano to explode, Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991, reduced the average global temperature at peak by half a degree Celsius.
Human beings could also put sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere (on a rather larger scale), to hold the temperature down, said Crutzen. The ice caps wouldn’t melt, our agriculture would continue to get the familiar weather it needs, and we would win ourselves more time to get our emissions down. We still have to get our emissions down in the end, he stressed, but it would be better not to have a global calamity on the way from here to there.
But the Reading University scientists have discovered a hitherto unsuspected side-effect of this kind of geo-engineering: The sulphur dioxide particles don’t just reflect back a portion of the incoming sunlight from above; they also reflect a portion of the long-wave radiation (heat) coming back up from the surface, and that heats the top of the troposphere.
The troposphere is the lower part of the atmosphere where all the weather happens. If you heat the top of the troposphere, you reduce the temperature difference between there and the surface, so the tropical overturning circulation weakens. That means less water vapour is carried up, and less rain falls back down. Result: Drought and famine.
The sulphur dioxide option was the cheapest and seemingly the best understood option for holding the temperature down. A great many people were glad that it was there, as a kind of safety net if we really don’t get our act together in time to halt the warming by less intrusive means. Now there’s no safety net.

Ravana Balaya wants two Bishops arrested

THURSDAY, 16 JANUARY 2014
While claiming that the Bishops of Mannar and Jaffna have provided ‘false’ information to US Ambassador-at-Large Stephen J. Rapp on the Sri Lankan civil war, the Ravana Balaya Organisation today urged the Inspector General of Police to arrest them.

“We condemn Stephen J. Rapp’s statement calling for a war crime investigation on Sri Lanka. We strongly believe that his statement is based on false information provided by Mannar Bishop Rev. Rayappu Joseph and Jaffna Bishop Rev. Thomas Soundranayagam. Therefore they should be arrested,” General Secretary the Ven. Iththekande Saddhatissa Thera said.

Rajapaksas Are My Gods

Colombo TelegraphMy sweet Gods, hhm my hordes, I really want to see you Goads; I really want to love you my hordes, but it took so long my hordes, Halleluiah, Mage Mamas, Mage Horas (a Hymn by Asarana Dr.  J. H. U. Gay Wimal Gammanpila)
Dr. Mahinda and Gotabaya Rajapaksa are my Gods. Yesterday, I converted my house into Rajapaksa-Temple-Shrine: I burnt all my books, threw all my statues of gods and goddess, built two statues of Mahinda and Gotabaya in front of an eternal flame, and started looking at them, with adoration, without blinking my eyes; I do not eat, sleep, or make love because I am in love with my Gods, transfixed with absolute fear and adoration.
So all you idiots out there, stop blaming my Gods and start worshipping them, 10 times a day, because five is not enough; turn your heads towards their Rajapaksa-Temple-Shrine and pray! You must worship their entire family because they are the Pantheon of Gods in this universe; why are you blaming my Gods for everything that has happened since this universe was—some 15 billion years ago—created by them with aBig Ban. My Gods, I am going to visit Sri Lanka soon, please permit me to take a photograph with you, because I want the entire world to know that you are my Gods. With this picture in my hand I can rule this world. I want to make 7 billion copies of your photo—both of you together in it—and distribute it to every single citizen on this planet earth; if necessary I will send them to other planets as well, so that  they can pray to both of you 10 times a day; all the temples, churches, synagogues, mosques, and kovils must get a copy so that people can worship you, along with their other gods; Muslims and Jews will obey, too,  even though it is a sacrilege to worship pictures in mosques and synagogues.
I am the first one to build this Temple-Shrine for Rajapaksa, not CUDU DHUMINDA. Your temple has no doors and windows; always open for public. You crazy Sri Lankans from all over the world, visit Rajapaksa Temple-Shrine in Newtown, PA, USA; if you do not have money, do not worry Mihin Lanka is giving free tickets, liquor, and even prostitutes during your plight; they will build a new airport tomorrow in Newtown and provide Mercedes Benz cars, food, liquor, sex with unlimited amount of women of all races, and Viagra, if you cannot get an erection. China is providing funds for this project; this is not another Chinese loan that we will not be able to pay back with prostitution; this is a gift from China, not a bribe.  If you want to visit the Rajapaksa Shrine, please send a money order to the following email address: theognostic@gmail.comIf you want to bring cash, please bring it with you and give it to my son before you enter. We accept all currencies. If you do not have money, please do not worry. Chinese-Rajapaksa-Fund will give it to you; just worship them every day, at least ten times a day for a week to see magical results; you, your children, siblings, relative, and friends will never have to work anymore if you worship my gods. If you have any enemies, just let my gods know, and they will make them disappear without a trace just by mentioning your enemies’ names. CIA, KGB, FBI, and MI5 work for my Gods.
He might get into university, but getting a job is another matter

COLOMBO, 9 January 2014 (IRIN) - University graduates in northern Sri Lanka, which is recovering from decades of civil war, are looking at a sparse employment landscape with few opportunities on offer, say officials.
“Those from the north face a much more difficult time than those from elsewhere in the country. New jobs are very difficult to find,” Rupavathi Keetheswaran, the government agent for the northern Kilinochchi District, the top public official in the area, told IRIN.

Tamil Nadu needs to initiate Vietnam-like international struggle

TamilNet[TamilNet, Monday, 13 January 2014, 23:26 GMT]
It is now explicit that the genocide and continued genocide committed on Eezham Tamils as a nation, is part of a larger global paradigm of ‘statecraft’ or tradecraft conceived and executed by Washington, London, New Delhi and Beijing in unison. They won’t alter the agenda of deploying or allowing the Sinhala State to annihilate the nation and territoriality of Eezham Tamils, unless the paradigm is globally challenged as was in the case of Vietnam, or is specifically thwarted by the power of the people in the region. The latter is more relevant to the context of Eezham Tamils. Tamil Nadu and other peoples of India are duty-bound to act not for the sake of Eezham Tamils but for their own sake and for entire humanity.

TNA councillor to resist Lanka govt plans for rehabilitation

Return to frontpage January 15, 2014
Reacting to the possibility of being sent to a Sri Lankan government—run rehabilitation camp meant for LTTE detainees, a TNA woman councillor of the northern provincial council has said she would resist the move.
Speaking to local media, Ananthi Saseetharan said that putting her under rehabilitation would require her arrest and any attempt to do so would have international repercussions for the government.
Saseetharan said she was never a member of the LTTE but wanted justice for her husband and several others who had disappeared during the three-decade ethnic conflict.
The Island, an English language daily close to the government reported that the Defence Ministry was seriously considering accommodating Saseetharan, the wife of a former senior LTTE member, at a rehabilitation facility to prevent her from propagating separatist sentiments.
The newspaper quoted a senior Defence Ministry source as saying that those who had not been arrested or surrendered at the conclusion of the conflict in May 2009 missed the government’s rehabilitation programme and Saseetharan was among those who had avoided rehabilitation.
Her husband Sinnathurai Sivakumar alias Elilan was the LTTE’s political commissar in the eastern port district of Trincomalee. He was among the top LTTE leaders killed during the final battle.
Saseetharan had met the visiting US Ambassador at large on criminal justice Stephen J Rapp when he toured the Tamil—dominated Sri Lankan north last week.
The government has released the 11,000 surrendered LTTE members after rehabilitation and feels that Saseetharan would not be espousing the separatist cause if she were to go through the process.
She had been elected to the northern provincial council in the landmark election held last September.

Caligula In Colombo

(January 16, 2014, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian)
At first sight, it read like the sort of buffoonery newspapers delight in, to honour the April Fools Day: ‘MOD ponders rehabilitating NPC member Ananthi’ . But this is January not April; and arresting the TNA provincial councillor who was second highest on the preference-votes list sounded just like the sort of something Gotabhaya Rajapaksa would love to ponder, if not do.

Colombo targets NPC member Ananthi for witnessing against Sri Lanka

TamilNet[TamilNet, Thursday, 16 January 2014, 07:59 GMT]
“I am fully prepared to confront the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence, which has leaked a news threatening to put me through their so-called military rehabilitation,” said Ananthi Sasitharan, the only woman candidate of the Northern Provincial Council (NPC), who also polled largest number of preferential votes next to the chief minister candidate of the NPC. Ms Ananthi Sasistharan was one of the public witnesses at the recent hearings by the Permanent Peoples Tribunal held in Bremen. She also met the US Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues, who visited Jaffna recently and explained to him that what went on in Vanni in 2009 was a genocidal onslaught and that a programme of structural genocide was being stepped up against Eezham Tamils.

The SL Ministry of Defence (MoD) was considering to arrest Ms Ananthi Sasitharan and put her through a so-called rehabilitation programme, reported Shamindra Fedinando, a ‘journalist’ of The Island paper.

Ananthi wouldn’t have adopted such a hostile stance towards the SL government and its military had she undergone the rehabilitation, the paper said citing an unnamed ‘senior source’ of the SL MoD.

Responding, Ms Ananthi Sasitharan said that Colombo was trying to curb the struggle for missing persons. This struggle will continue despite the threats coming from Colombo and its military Establishment, she said.

46-year-old Ananthi Sasitharan is the wife of Ezhilan, the former Trincomalee Political Head of the LTTE and a mother of three girls. She personally witnessed Sri Lanka military taking away her husband at the end the Vanni War in May 2009.

The SL State is still refusing to reveal the fate of those who were filtered away from the civilians and taken into buses to undisclosed detention camps.

Court orders arrest of Church attack suspects (Updated)

Colombo Gazettechurch attackBy admin on January 16, 2014
The Galle Additional Magistrate today ordered the police to arrest the suspects involved in the Hikkaduwa church attack, police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told the Colombo Gazette.
The Magistrate also instructed the police to obtain unedited video footage of the incident from the media to assist the investigations.
The police said that 26 suspects had been identified as being involved in the incident and among them are 10 monks.
The ‘Hela Bodu Pawura’ consisting of a group of Buddhist monks led a protest march against the Calvary Free church and Assembly of God (AOG) Church in Hikkaduwa last Sunday and the protest eventually turned violent with the mob attacking both churches.
The ‘Hela Bodu Pawura’ however claimed that the media had distorted what actually took place during the “peaceful protest” against the worship center.
The monks claimed the two worship centers were operating illegally in violation of a police ban and a directive from the Government. (Colombo Gazette)

Chandi malli’s son, Chandi Amila all of rowdy regime attacks hospital staff – Police asleep as always
(Lanka-e-News-16.Jan.2014, 7.00AM) Embilipitiya local body chairman M.K.Amila , the son of Medamulana criminal ‘chandi malli’ who was murdered earlier on , had along with a group of his thugs assaulted brutally two employees of the Tissamaharama base hospital within the hospital premises itself.

Though the two workers were admitted to hospital and a complaint had been lodged with the police , no action has been taken yet.

This unlawful attack had been launched at about 1.00 at dawn yesterday (15) .

Amila had arrived at the base hospital in a ‘ Cab’ vehicle along with his gang of goons citing the ground that an insect had crept into the ear of one of his goons, and therefore to secure medical treatment.

Since Chandi Malli’s son Amila has parked his ‘Cab’ within the hospital premises blocking the path along which the ambulances have to travel , the hospital security officer had advised Amila to park the vehicle elsewhere after explaining him the reason. Amila who was provoked by this request had screamed ‘yakko do you know who I am?’ and begun moving towards the security officer to assault him , when a health service staff assistant who saw this had intervened, whereupon , Amila and his goons had set about and brutally attacked them.

The victims of the assault were health service staff assistant Pasindhu Ranasinghe Madusanka and security officer Indika Amala Kumara. Both of them are warded and taking indoor treatment at the hospital .

It is significant to note that M.K.Amila the thug is the younger son of late Chandi Malli the criminal , while M.K. Kasun is the elder son . Under this lawless reign , unsurprisingly both are chairpersons of local bodies : Amila is chairman of Emblipitiya local body and Kasun is chairman of Beliatta local body.

Kasun who visited the hospital has had discussions with the two victims. However , the hospital employees say , if the police do not arrest the assailants , the entire hospital staff is contemplating staging a strike.

It is well to recall how this Chandi Malli’s son Amila sometime ago , arrived armed with a gang and tried to attack and shoot the police officers because the traffic police imposed a fine on an assistant of his at Panamure. They assaulted the police with the butts of their guns and threatened to shoot them after shooting into the air . Despite all that violence and attempts at murder , the police were stymied in their efforts to arrest Amila , yet another MaRa regime marauder and murderer. Only later they surrendered to the court, but still nobody knows what happened to the case or where it went and hid . The culprits went unpunished.

Believe it or not ! when SSP Prishantha Jayakody took due action and sought to safeguard the police prestige , the criminal defense secretary of Sri Lanka , Gotabaya on the other hand, under this bestial reign and in keeping with the prevailing jungle laws insisted that the SSP should ask for pardon from the marauder and thug ‘chandi Amila’. Prishantha who refused left SL in disgust.

In the circumstances , if the lesson that could not be taught by the police to these political goons and gangs under this lawless reign , can be taught by the hospital staff , it would be a great service in the best interests of the nation, towards which the people too will extend their support.

New Democrat MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan says she was followed, interrogated in Sri Lanka

NDP MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan says her recent experience in Sri Lanka strengthened her resolve to fight for human rights in the country and across the world. “That’s the reality for people in that country. I just had a small taste of it.”

NDP MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan says her recent experience in Sri Lanka strengthened her resolve to fight for human rights in the country and across the world. “That’s the reality for people in that country. I just had a small taste of it.”

Canada's first Tamil MP said officials followed, interrogated her during family visit to Sri Lanka.

By:  Staff Reporter, Published on Thu Jan 16 2014
OTTAWA—It took a day for Rathika Sitsabaiesan to realize she was being followed.
The first person to notice the men on motorbikes was her hired driver. On the day she arrived in Sri Lanka, where the32-year old MP was born, he told her that people were following them.
“I was slow to catch on, because I didn’t expect it, I wasn’t used to it,” Sitsabaiesan told the Star in her first interview since returning to Canada on Tuesday.
“And then the next day it happened, and we were like ‘Oh, this is a constant thing.’ And then outside my hotel, they would just hang out and give word when I left.”
Sitsabaiesan went to Sri Lanka on Dec. 28, 27 years after her family immigrated to Canada. The NDP MP for Scarborough-Rouge River — the first federal parliamentarian of Tamil descent and a vocal critic of the Sri Lankan government — said it was a personal trip, not a political one, to see family and the few places she remembered from her early childhood.
The men on the motorbikes, however, seemed to suspect otherwise.
On New Year’s Eve, Sitsabaiesan said she visited an orphanage she was considering supporting. While she toured one of its three buildings, the employee giving the tour received a phone call that a group of people had arrived at the main entrance with a warrant for Sitsabaiesan’s arrest.
“We were like, ‘Holy wow, they actually showed up.’ And there was no reason for them to show up, because there was no reason for them to have an arrest warrant,” Sitsabaiesan said.
She said she wasn’t about to get arrested in front of the orphanage — she felt she had done nothing wrong in visiting family, her grandfather’s and mother’s old houses, and her family’s former store. So she slipped away unnoticed, returned to her nearby hotel and changed rooms.
She immediately called the Canadian High Commission, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair and the party’s foreign affairs critic, Paul Dewar.
“It was a few hours of me staying in my hotel room and not even opening the curtain, because I didn’t want anyone to know I was in there,” Sitsabaiesan said. “Just waiting to get word from the high commission whether there is a real arrest warrant or not.”
It was that night that a number of news reports said she had been placed under house arrest. Sitsabaiesan said she had not spoken to any media outlets, and did not know the origin of that story.
After consulting with four law enforcement agencies — local police, the criminal and terrorism intelligence divisions, and immigration authorities — Sitsabaiesan said the high commission found there was no warrant. Only then did she feel safe enough to leave her hotel.
The next day, she said, government officials caught up with her while at a factory owned by a friend’s family member.
The factory trip was not planned — Sitsabaiesan said she spilled something on her shirt and needed a place to change along the road — but three men identifying themselves as immigration officers found her there.
“They wanted a space where it was private and nobody else was allowed in. They were standing in the doorway, and it was me and these three men,” said Sitsabaiesan.
“They had a list of exactly what I’ve been doing, and they go, ‘You did this, you did that, you met with this person, you did this, who is this person, why, give me names, give me contacts, give me this and that.’ ”
She said she was intimidated by the line of questioning, but after the experience the day before, was also conscious of her privileges as a Canadian and as a Member of parliament.
“Eventually, the controller general of immigration was on the phone saying, ‘You know, we’re trying to protect you and we’re looking out for your best interests by following you,’ ” Sitsabaiesan said.
The Star could not reach the Sri Lankan High Commission in Ottawa for comment, but officials have previously accused Sitsabaiesan of attempting to “embarrass” the Sri Lankan government.
“While Sri Lankan authorities handled this issue in a responsible manner, the statement made by Ms. Sitsabaiesan . . . that she was subjected to ‘political intimidation’ is erroneous and is an attempt to unfairly embarrass the Sri Lanka Government,” a statement posted to the high commission’s website reads.
In an editorial, one state-owned media outlet described the rookie MP as a “destroyer of peace” who planted the house arrest story to garner votes with the Tamil population in Scarborough—Rouge River.
That same outlet published comments apparently from External Affairs Minister Neomal Perera alleging Sitsabaiesan was part of a “pro-LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) lobby.”
“This is typical of their disinformation campaign. They use their sophisticated international media network to spread stories like this,” the Daily News reportedPerera as saying.
“She did not come to Sri Lanka because she loved the Tamil public. It is said that she is to submit a report on the lives of Tamils in this country and development activities in Sri Lanka.”
Sitsabaiesan firmly denied participating in any political activity while on her trip.
She praised Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and Lynne Yelich, the minister of state for consular affairs, and their offices for their help through the ordeal.
“Minister Baird and Minister Yelich’s office were texting me and saying, ‘We’re here for your support if you need anything, if you have any updates let us know.’ And so it was great that on New Year’s Eve that all these people came to have my back,” Sitsabaiesan said.
And she said that, if anything, the experience strengthened her resolve to fight for human rights in Sri Lanka and across the world.
“That’s the reality for people in that country. I just had a small taste of it.”

Junket John Appointed To UNP Nomination Board For Southern And Western PC Polls

January 16, 2014
Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunge who came in for strong criticism over his decision to accompany President Mahinda Rajapaksa on his recent trip to the Middle East, has been appointed a member of the UNP Nomination Board for the Southern and Western Provincial Council elections.
Ranil and John
Ranil and John
Colombo TelegraphAmaratunge will be tasked along with other members of the Nomination Board with deciding on which candidates the UNP will field at the next crucial round of provincial polls.
Controversy raged when Amaratunge, who has long been suspected of tacitly working with the Rajapaksa administration, hopped onboard the Presidential jet to visit Israel and Palestine. Speculation abounded that Amaratunge had travelled with the President for talks about a potential crossover to the Government. The Opposition Whip claimed later that he had obtained permission from UNP National Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to travel with the President.
But most UNP members were furious over the move at a time when the combined opposition is vehemently anti-Rajapaksa and deeply critical of state extravagance. The decision by the Chief Opposition Whip who spearheads an opposition campaign in Parliament to take a joyride with the President eroded public confidence in the UNP’s commitment to effect a change of regime in the country, UNP MPs said.  With the Leadership Council now in place and in charge of discipline, the MPs felt Amaratunge should have sought permission of the Council for his trip and his failure to do so should result in censure by the Council.
The failure to hold Amaratunge to account for his actions because he is known to be a Ranil Wickremesingheloyalist erodes the party’s credibility at a time when it is calling for an unified commitment and approach to take on the ruling regime, the MPs believe.

Appealing Amunugama on his knees before president!

mahinda sarathMinister Sarath Amunugama has gone down on his knees before the president and appealed that he be given the position of SLFP organizer for Elpitiya electorate, according to Temple Trees sources. Responding, the president has told him sarcastically, because he well knows the reason behind the request, that he could not take a decision on his own, and that it is up to SLFP general secretary Maithripala Sirisena to take the final decision.

Later, at the cabinet meeting in front of all other ministers, the president has told the SLFP general secretary, “Mr. general secretary, our minister Amunugama wants the Elpitiya electoral organizer position. Help him if you can.” Pat came the reply from Maithripala Sirisena, “Minister Amunugama cannot be given Elpitiya. I am thinking of resigning from Polonnaruwa and taking up Elpitiya. Once in a while, we too, should…,” to the loud laughter by all members of the cabinet to his unfinished remark. Minister Amunugama’s request ended then and there.

Secretary swindles courtesy Faizer Mustafa!

fiser musthapaRifki Badiuddeen, a secretary of deputy minister of investment promotion  Faizer Mustafa, has misused several state-owned properties, including the defaulting of taxes due for several plots of land owned by the Janatha Estate Development Board, which he had obtained on 33 year and 90 year lease.
There was a case against him over a fraud he had committed regarding a one-and-a-half acre plot of land behind Mag City in Colombo. However, the law was manipulated and Rifki got escaped, thanks to his bribing skills.

Earlier too, he had bribed former chairmen of JEDB and misused lands owned by the state institution. Rifki publicly claims that no action is being taken against him as he had given a Rs. 5 million bribe to incumbent, Udaya Sri Kariyawasam, who is an accountant. He says without any fear that he had given the money to the JEDB chairman by cheque and that all documents pertaining to it were in his possession.

His legal matters are being handled by none other than deputy minister Faizer Mustafa, who enjoys all perks and privileges provided by the government as well. Also, Mustafa cannot do anything against his secretary, as it is through him that he gets women, his preference being older women, for himself. In addition, Rifki has given Rs. 100 million to Mustafa for assisting his land robberies, and threatened that no money will be given to the Qatar and Saudi funds.

If the JEDB is willing to send us an explanation with regard to this cheat, we can accommodate them in the website. Await a series of articles detailing the frauds committed by deputy minister Mustafa’s secretary….
