The intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden will on Monday attempt to complete an audacious escape to the relative safety of South America after his departure from Hong Kong aggravated already fraught diplomatic relations between the United States and China.
In a move that appeared to bewilder the White House, Snowden was allowed to flee Hong Kong on Sunday morning and head to Moscow on a commercial flight despite a formal request from the US to have the 30-year-old detained and extradited to face espionage charges for a series of leaks about the National Security Agency (NSA) and Britain's spy centre, GCHQ.

Father’s name gets sons to the team

Monday, 24 June 2013
National cricket team selector Hashan Thilekaratne’s sons have reportedly been included in the under 17 Sri Lanka cricket team that is to tour England in August. Sri Lanka Cricket sources say that although the selection of the team was done by the school selection committee, they have included Thilekaratne’s sons in order to score points with the national selector.
This is the first time a national selector has managed to get both his sons into a national team.
However, it is learnt that the Sports Minister has not yet approved the list of cricketers to tour England.
According to cricket viewers, one of Thilekaratne’s sons is quite a good cricketer while the inclusion of the other in the team is quite doubtful.
Thilekaratne is currently in the West Indies for the Sri Lankan team’s tour in the West Indies.

THE INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT AGAINST ALL FORMS OF DISCRIMINATION AND RACISM
PRESS RELEASE
IMADR condemns the harassment of a Sri Lankan Human Rights Defender by a group led by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Tokyo
TOKYO, 13 JUNE 2013 – IMADR strongly condemns any kinds and acts of reprisal and harassment against Human Rights Defenders and expresses its grave concern and protest against the action and behavior of Sri Lankan Embassy representatives for Japan at a public event in Tokyo hurling abusive words at a prominent Sri Lankan Human Rights Defender.
In the evening of 12th June, 2013, the International Movement Against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism (IMADR) organized a public seminar on human rights and development challenges in Sri Lanka at its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. The main part of the event was the lecture by Dr. Nimalka FERNANDO, a Human Rights Defender (HRD) from Sri Lanka and the president of IMADR. Along with Japanese participants, the event was also attended by several Sri Lankan persons, who were led by two representatives from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Japan.
The lecture of Dr. Fernando was repeatedly disrupted by unruly interventions made by the Sri Lankan participants. While the organizer did not prevent participants from asking questions and comments whenever appropriate, with due respect for a constructive dialogue Sri Lankan participants began to harass and hurl verbal abuse at Dr. Fernando rather than engage in constructive dialogue. Even after the closure of the event with a clear announcement made by the organiser, several Sri Lankan participants continued hurling abusive comments at Dr. Fernando saying that she is contracted to do such a lecture and that she is betraying her country. Moreover, one Sri Lankan person, who identified himself as a representative from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Japan, banged a water bottle on the table and demanded that Dr. Fernando explain as to why she has not given a good image of the country as tourism is booming in Sri Lanka. As she tried to explain her position, some other Sri Lankans continued making abusive comments at her in a threatening manner by following her up to the lift.
Similar incidents of reprisal, attacks, intimidation and harassment against HRDs from Sri Lanka by Sri Lankan authorities were observed in Geneva, Switzerland during the 19th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC), where Dr. Fernando was also one of their targets. IMADR expresses its grave concern over the continuing unruly behaviour of the representatives of Sri Lankan Embassy and strongly condemns any acts or kinds of reprisal, intimidation and harassment of HRDs. The Sri Lankan Government must immediately stop such acts and conduct a disciplinary
inquiry on the conduct of the Embassy officials in Tokyo and offer an apology to Dr. Fernando and the organizers. We further urge the Government of Sri Lanka to take all necessary and genuine actions to implement its obligation under international human rights laws and recommendations made by UN HR experts including the HRC resolutions 19/2 and 22/1. IMADR remains committed to work for protection and promotion of human rights and continue its efforts to address human rights issues in Sri Lanka.

A River For Jaffna

By Thiru  Arumugam -June 23, 2013
Thiru Arumugam
Colombo TelegraphJaffna Peninsula has an area of 1000 square km and being flat has no rivers and is totally dependent on the annual rainfall of about 1270 mm, of which about 87% falls during the north-east monsoon from October to December, for recharge of the water table in the underground aquifer.  In the past, water was drawn from wells for domestic and agricultural use by well sweeps, but from the 1950’s onwards pumps have been used to draw water from these wells.  There are nearly 100,000 wells in the Peninsula. This over pumping for agricultural use has drawn down the fresh water stored in the limestone aquifer resulting in sea water percolating into the wells through the fractured limestone, as no part of Jaffna is more than about 15 km from the sea. At present about 30% of the wells in the Jaffna Peninsula are saline. Recent reports from agricultural experts state that more than 4500 hectares of fertile agricultural land have turned saline and have become unsuitable for cultivation.

The height of hypocrisy – the Code of Media Ethics

Sunday, June 23, 2013
I had the doubtful ‘pleasure’ of reading the document entitled “The Code of Media Ethics” circulated among various media institutions by the Ministry of Mass Media and Information which left me with two choices – to laugh or to cry. As it happened, I did neither.
So furious was I that this Government in which I once had so much faith could resort to this kind of tomfoolery and actually believe that the people were such absolute imbeciles that they would fall for it that I, for once in my life, was left speechless.
I have always believed that only the ‘honourable’ had the right to confer `honours’ so that not one of our Executive Presidents was capable of and/or had the moral right to confer any `honours’ or purported `honours’ [be it even an appointment as a Justice of the Peace' or a `President's Counsel'] on any person.
Sri Lankan Public Relations Minister Mervyn Silva Drinks His Own Urine Daily

Edited By - chennaiguuy - 22 Jun 2013

Lanka NewspapersMC062113The secret behind the good health of Minister of Public Relations and Public Affairs Mervyn Silva is due to his emulating former Indian Prime minister Morarji Desai who lived up tp a hundred years

It is now known that the controversial politician elected as MP from Gampaha district drinks his own urine every day just as Morarji Desai did.
Now Sri Lanka s Mervyn Silva too has revealed to a Colombo newspaper that he has a daily drink of his own urine. But apparently he does not sip or gulp it down neat.Nopes he needs a chaser for this potent brew. So Mervyn diluted his urine with plain water.

He says that he maintains good health due to this daily drink.

Mervyn however does not say anything about whether his erratic conduct is a side effect of this unusual drink. We do not know whether he had consumed his own urine before tying up a Samurdhi official to a tree or dragging a Rupavahini Journalist by his collar or squeezing the private parts of former Jathika Hela Urumaya MP Ven. Akmeemana Dayaratne Thero in Parliament.

There is however a difference. Morarji was an old school politician inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. Mervyn Silva with his pretensions to Dutu Gemunu ancestry is .well, Dutu Mervyn!

After Desai s disclosure ,the chattering classes in India began referring to Urine as Morarji Cola .

I suppose in Sri Lanka it could be Mervyn Cola .

How Many of LNP Duttu gemenu followers drink 'Mervyn Cola' daily ???

LOL !

Sri Lankan Public Relations Minister Mervyn Silva Drinks His Own Urine Daily Like Ex-Indian PM Morarji Desai

Public Relations Minister Mervyn Silva & Ex-Indian PM Morarji Desai
MC062113After Morarji’s disclosure about drinking urine he became the butt of many jokes.
One went something like this –
Question:
Does Morarji Desai take Liquor ?
Answer:
No! He is a Gandhian.
Q:
Then why does he look drunk all the time?
A:
Oh! That’s because he did take liquor once in his life and has been recycling it ever since then.
Morarji Desai was also asked questions about his preferred beverage by impish journalists at times
Morarji was Prime minister of India from 1977 to 1979. I remember the press conference in Colombo when Desai was the chief guest at Independence day celebrations in February 1979.JR Jayewardene was the president then.
The irrepressible ABC de Silva who later became chairman of state printing corporation under President Chandrika Kumaratunga was a reporter attached to the SLFP newspaper ”Dinakara” then.
ABC as he was known asked Morarji about the medicinal properties of drinking one’s own urine. An unflappable Morarji Desai answered with full seriousness. Most journalists had a trying time to keep a straight face. The minister in attendance was Lalith Athulathmudali who was not amused and glared at the questioner. But ABC was unperturbed.
Now one wonders whether Mervyn too would be asked questions in similar vein and whether he would be the target of urinary jokes.
There is however a difference. Morarji was an old school politician inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. Mervyn Silva with his pretensions to Dutu Gemunu ancestry is………….well, Dutu Mervyn!
One thing however is possible.
After Desai’s disclosure ,the chattering classes in India began referring to Urine as “Morarji Cola”.
I suppose in Sri Lanka it could be “Mervyn Cola”.

Raving mad BBS monks and junks destroy church building carvings and historic moonstone

http://www.lankaenews.com/English/images/logo.jpg
(Lanka-e-News-23.June.2013, 4.30PM) The Bodhu Bala Sena (BBS) , a paramilitary extremist terror group of the Rajapakse regime, has in its latest maniacal violence in the series of attacks on people and places of worship of other religions , had begun attacking catholic churches. The BBS claiming that the various sculpted figures in the churches are belonging to Buddhism , have broken into the catholic churches , and destroyed them.

The first of these BBS terror attacks had been begun on the 20th at the Kalutara , Maggona , Laggala Kumara Kanda church, according to reports. After claiming that a moonstone in a semi circle in the front side of the door belongs only to the Buddhists had removed it forcibly and taken to a Buddhist temple close by. As it has become a common practice in Sri Lanka under a regime which enthrones lawlessness , so these religious extremists had been permitted to do whatever they want in their maniacal and fanatical obsession , and nothing has been done to prevent their lawless criminal actions.

The second round of violence in close succession was unleashed on the 21 st on the Kalutara , Katukurunda St. Philipneris church. As far back as 1965 , Rev. Henry Rodrigo , a catholic father built this church with a view to retain its Sri Lankan identity. He therefore had on its door a ‘punkalas’ pot carving , and carvings on the walls .

In addition a number of carvings including the semi circle moonstone adorned the entrance to the church.

The BBS religious maniacs who broke into the church on the 21 st had attempted to destroy them alleging that those sculptures belong to Buddhists , and churches are not entitled to have them.

With the tolling of the church bell , the residents of the area had begun thronging the church when a dispute had erupted between the BBS trouble makers who are looking for trouble like the vultures looking for their prey, and the other group. The police who arrived on the scene had managed to avert a clash. However not a single BBS goon or a gun toting priest had been arrested. Police security has now been detailed around the church.

Since of late , the organized violence and hooliganism of the Buddhist extremist groups enjoying patronage of the Rajapakse regime are burgeoning across the country . We have already reported in so many articles , how the police force higher ups who ought to be enforcing the law have instead taken the law into their hands and committed abductions , murders and extortions outrageously and with impunity taking advantage of the anarchy in the country under a despotic regime .

Throughout history it had been proved that whoever stoked and safeguarded extremism and fanaticism under whatever pretext had finally met their waterloo at the hands of the very Frankenstein monster they created. This is an unassailable and indestructible truth .

The most unfortunate part of this Frankenstein drama is , before these creators of these monsters are destroyed by their creation , it is the innocent civilians and law abiding citizens who suffer and die in the interim. It is therefore hoped that before the Frankenstein monster and its creator can unleash more violence and untold sufferings on the country where Lord Buddha preached peace and harmony , these so called self seeking opportunistic cardboard Buddhist heroes who are practicing violence instead of peace and stoking disharmony instead of harmony are annihilated for the greater good of all and specially the true Buddhists.
Arrest of NGO chief politically motivated?

 22 June 2013
The recent arrest of the head of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, a German NGO working in Sri Lanka, was initially said to have been made due to a “compensation issue” with a former employee.
However a report in The Nation, has revealed that concerns had been raised about the work the NGO does on the island, including attending Tamil political meetings, which, according to the paper, would be an “act of interference in the internal affairs of a country”.
The arrest of Nora Langenbacher, the head of the NGO,drew protests from the German foreign ministry.

Außenminister Westerwelle protestiert gegen Umgang mit Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Sri LankaAußenminister Westerwelle protestiert gegen Umgang mit Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Sri Lanka

“It is reported that this individual attended a meeting organized by the Bishop of Mannar recently where strategies were discussed to develop a common political program for the Tamil Community. Political analysts point that this is an act of interference in the internal affairs of a country and not mandated by agreement or convention,” the article in The Nation said.
“Earlier this year, the Social Democratic Party of Germany, which is the main opposition party in the country, submitted a motion on Sri Lanka’s human rights issues to the German Federal Parliament, concurrent with the UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva. The motion was defeated despite the efforts of the SPD. It has reportedly come to the knowledge of Sri Lankan authorities that the FES played an important role in drafting the said motion. Sources indicate that the FES has been sending confidential reports to the SPD concerning the post-conflict situation in the island.”

“It is alleged that the motion has been submitted to the German parliament as a measure of solidarity with the resolution against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC. It has also been found that the FES has a close relationship with Navanetham Pillay, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. In 2003, the FES awarded its annual Human Rights Award to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda when she was its president. She has attended a Luncheon Meeting on the Right to Development organized by the FES in April 2010 at Geneva as ‘a special guest’. Pillay has been regularly accused by high profile ruling party politicians as being prejudiced against Sri Lanka.”

Is Indo-Sri Lanka Accord A Path To Accountability And Reconciliation?

By G. K. Nathan -June 23, 2013
Dr. G. K. Nathan
Colombo TelegraphThe accord between Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi of India and the President of Sri Lanka J R Jayawardene was signed on 29th July 1987 to end the on going conflict between Sinhala and Tamil Nations, which started almost four decades ago with gaining of independence in 1948. A few of the key events which led to worsening of conflict and inevitable intervention of India are: disenfranchisement of Indian Tamils in 1948 brought by British to work in plantation sector, government sponsored colonization of North East Sri Lanka started in 1948 (recognized in the accord as area of historical habitation of Tamil speaking people, it is referred to as Tamil Eelam using the acient name), introduction of “Sinhala Only Bill” in 1956, deportation of large number of disenfranchised Tamils to India started in 1964 under Srimavo-Shastri Pact (no other country with Indian Tamils in Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa has done so),   depriving of economic benefits to Sinhala youth resulted in armed rebellion against the government in 1971, indirectly inspired by the Sinhala youth together with denial of educational and employment opportunities to Tamil youth  initiated the Tamil militancy under the name of TNT in 1972,  repeated anti-Tamil riots or pogroms (1956, 1958, 1974, 1977 and 1983) against Tamils as a reaction to the demand for recognition and equal rights.  The accord and the direct intervention of India to enforce resolution of Sinhala-Tamil conflict, brought hope to the Tamil Nation and adverse reaction from a section of Sinhala Nation; but, overwhelmingly there was hope that the military confrontation between the Sinhala and Tamil Nations will be brought to an end and usher peace and prosperity to all. Contrary to expectations, after a brief period of “peace”,  fighting broke out and continued for another two decades.  The fighting intensified after President Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka in January 2008, unilaterally abrogated the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA);  signed on 21 February 2002 between Sri Lanka Prime Minister and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam – LTTE, faciliated by US, EU, Norway and Japan, this was the second international
India wants 13A in ‘present form’

By Our Political Correspondent-
2013-06-23
Indian National Security Adviser, Shiv Shankar Menon, who is scheduled to arrive in Colombo, will apprise the government about the Indian position that the 13th Amendment need to be implemented in its 'present form' and explore defence cooperation with Colombo in a bid to prevent it coaxing up to China, well-placed New Delhi sources said.

A diplomatic crisis has been brewing between Colombo and New Delhi after the government forged ahead with the plans to scrap several clauses in the 13th Amendment, specifically a clause that provide for the merger of two provinces.

Menon is expected to arrive in Colombo early next month and a separate visit by Indian External Affairs Minister, Salman Khurshid, is also on the cards, according to the South bloc sources.
Earlier, after Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, expressed concern over Colombo's plans to weaken the 13th Amendment.

"It was noted the proposed changes raised doubts about the commitments made by the Sri Lankan Government to India and the international community, including the United Nations, on a political settlement in Sri Lanka that would go beyond the 13th Amendment," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Syed Akbaruddin said, after a meeting between Prime Minister Singh and a Tamil National Alliance (TNA) delegation.

"The changes would also be incompatible with the recommendation of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC), set up by the Government of Sri Lanka, calling for a political settlement based on the devolution of power to the provinces," he added.

Meanwhile, Indian National Security Adviser Menon had come hard on TNA Leader, R. Sampanthan, when he mentioned, during a meeting with Menon that the collapse of the LTTE has weakened the Tamil leadership in its bargaining power in the Island's political scene.

During the discussion, when the TNA leader had mentioned the LTTE and had also told Menon India failed to bring in a ceasefire during the last lap of the war, Menon had responded furiously, telling Sampanthan not to mention about the LTTE and reminded the TNA leader that he (Menon) was even on the hit list of the outfit when he served in Colombo as the Indian High Commissioner (1997-2000).

Menon, knowing very well the political background of the TNA leader, had reminded him that a long time ago, even Sampanthan was on the hit list of the LTTE, sources said.
The Indian diplomat, listening carefully to the issues put forward by the TNA delegation with regard to the land acquisition in the North and also on removing police and land powers from the 13th Amendment, had said India would firmly stand by the 13th Amendment and it would continue to work towards a political settlement for the Tamil question in the island, TNA sources said.

In the meantime, the TNA delegation had talks with Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the External Affairs Minister as well.
Dr. Singh has assured the TNA parliamentarians during the talks the Indian Government would not let down the Lankan Tamils and pointed out to the TNA parliamentarians that India was concerned about the political developments with regard to the 13th Amendment.

The TNA MPs returned to the island on Friday after their five-day visit to New Delhi and two TNA MPs, Suresh Premachandran and Selvan Adaikalanathan, have travelled to Berlin on Friday to attend a meeting arranged by Tamil expatriates.

Meanwhile, South Africa's Deputy Minister of External Affairs, Ibrahim Ibrahim, will arrive in Colombo today and is expected to have talks with the TNA and representatives of the government on playing a mediatory role between the government and the TNA in the political talks, sources said.

South Africa has shown a keen interest in helping the resumption of talks between the TNA and the government. A high level South African delegation, which included Deputy Minister Ibrahim Ibrahim, also met government leaders as well as the TNA members last year in Colombo.

TNA wants Military Governor replaced prior to Northern PC Election

North still under military rule - Shritharan

Sivagnanam Shritharan-

by Zacki Jabbar

The Tamil National Alliance(TNA) yesterday called for the Northern Province Governor Major General (Rtd) G.A.Chandrasiri to be replaced with a civilian ahead of the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) Election scheduled for September.

A conducive climate for the conduct of a free and fair Poll was essential and the first step in that direction should be the appointment of a civilian as Governor of the North, Jaffna District TNA MP Sivagnanam Shritharan told the "Sunday Island".

Asked how a retired army officer could influence the conduct of the election, he said that the North was still under military rule over four years after the war had ended and there was no difference between retired and serving generals.

"We believe the NPC poll would not be free and fair if the Province continued to be headed by a military man ", the MP noted calling on President Mahinda Rajapaksa to listen to the genuine and valid fears of the Tamils.

Shritharan, said that the chaos in the Eastern Provincial Council (EPC) with the ruling UPFA Councillors themselves refusing to work with the Governor, who was a retired Rear Admiral, cannot be dismissed lightly.

If in an elected body the Governor was behaving in a dictatorial manner, you could imagine the extent to which an election held virtually under army rule in the North could be influenced in favour of the government, he observed.

Agents of the Governor were already visiting homes in the North to ascertain as to how many votes each household had, the MP said adding that for the Tamils who were recovering from three decades of violence, it automatically instilled a sense of fear and suspicion as regards the motives.

With the ruling UPFA also having within its ranks former para military groups, whose modus operandi was only too well known, all traces of military involvement have to be removed if the elections were not only free and fair but also appeared to be so, Shritharan said.

Making A Shift In The National Security Discourse

Colombo TelegraphBy Kishali Pinto-Jayawardena -June 23, 2013
Kishali Pinto-Jayawardena
This is a time when moderation, commonsense and basic decency have been cast to the four winds in Sri Lanka. It is a time when hatred against different communities is hailed and felicitated. And President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s appeal to the media this week not to give publicity to rampaging monks of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) certainly does not solve this problem. Rather, it exacerbates the issue.
Unacceptable and simplistic injunctions

Balance of forces lie against - anti-devolution elements

By Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratne-WEDNESDAY, 19 JUNE 2013

Mahinda is conducting a difficult battle for anti-devolution because he has already made a commitment both locally and internationally to implement the 13th Amendment and to go even beyond it while also giving an assurance to implement the LLRC recommendations.

However, such assurances given by the President would not give him much comfort as he also has to satisfy the demands of his chauvinist battalions who are so dear to him.

Often he identifies with the thinking of the chauvinists than with the populist ideology of the mainstream SLFP. This does not however generate the finances necessary to run the government and keep the so-called development programmes moving ahead.

Chauvinist mobilisations have won almost all the major political battles they unleashed since 2009. However, Mahinda faced a few problems lately. In the recent past, it was apparent. In his attempt to introduce a fraudulent private sector pension plan, he had to back off. It was a serious and significant exception. True, it took the united effort of the country’s private sector employees, mobilization of other sectors and one young life, to beat the Rajapaksa plan to buttress their tottering finances by robbing private sector workers.

Since this retreat, Mahinda has been working carefully always consulting loyal trade union leaders. But the Opposition has grown stronger and the regime weaker. Given the current class mobilization and the actual shifting of forces, defeating the administration does not look as difficult a task as it had been seen earlier.

Mahinda supporters would have been able to win  the anti-devolution battle with ease, had the balance of forces not undergone a dramatic change, momentarily, due to the activation of class forces here and an external mobilisations made by Tamils. The latter was able to exert much pressure on India. In this scenario, Indians were outraged by the Mahinda regime’s latest attempt to disembowel the 13th Amendment.

Indian leaders had to ask themselves “Do Mahinda and Prof. GL think we in New Delhi are blithering idiots who can’t see through their hocus pocus”? Mahinda perfectly understands that all cannot be fooled all the time.

He came up as a centre-left leader working closely with the CP and the LSSP. He was very close to Vasu too. He is not prepared yet to completely abandon this political image he has built with a lot of patience and hard work. He does not want to relinquish his radical populist past.

" The widespread complaint is that the Opposition Leader has none of the abilities the President has got, so he is incapable of defeating Mahinda. But one can easily see that the problems faced by the government cannot be solved only by tactics. Mahinda is not doing do very well in the arena of strategy and programme. The country cannot survive only by tactical steps taken by its political leaders. Serious and far-reaching changes are essential to unite the country "

In my opinion, Mahinda is a maestro of evasion. His ability to slither out of a tight corner will put an eel to shame. His ability to make friends is unbeatable. When confronted with strong resistance, he could make a feint of retreating, without conceding any real ground. Once resistance has been disarmed by promises, he returns with lightening speed, without giving their distracted opponents the time to re-arm. At least that is what he will attempt.
