UNP Is Disturbed With The Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Statement

May 31, 2013
Colombo Telegraph“The UNP is disturbed with the Secretary-General’s statement that his good offices have drawn up the road map that the “Commonwealth had developed and agreed upon by Sri Lanka”.  The UNP is of the belief that the Secretary General´s interventions are limited to Human Rights Commission and the Electoral Commission and in fact avoid all real issues connected with Human Rights at the level of civil society. ” says the United National Party.
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe
Issuing a statement UNP says; “During the visits to Sri Lanka by the Secretary-General in September 2012 and February 2013, the Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the United National Party Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe met with him.  At these meetings, Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe while emphasizing his and his party’s support for holding the CHOGM in Colombo for the year 2013, said that outstanding issues relating to Commonwealth values, UNHRC Resolutions regarding Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka’s own Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC)’s recommendations should be resolved before CHOGM 2013 commences.   It will be embarrassing to all concerned to have these issues on the Commonwealth Agenda with Sri Lanka chairing CHOGM.”
If 13 abolished, Kachchatheevu will be the outcome. India puts the bridle to Sri lanka.
Thursday , 30 May 2013
13th amendment was implemented with the backing of Indian government, and Sri Lanka government is taking measures to abolish it, and the outcome will be Kachchatheevu to take back, is the decision taken by the Delhi administration is according to information received from high level diplomatic circles.
Concerning this issue, Congress party leader Sonia Ghandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, External Affairs Minister Shalman Kurshid including state high level officials held discussions with their diplomats in Delhi is according to information received from those circles.
Massive opposes which have never happened before are  now got  emerged in Sri Lanka  against the accord signed by Sri Lanka and Indian governments  as a settlement to the Eelam Tamils  in the year 1987
Mainly the government’s chauvinist’s partnership parties of Alliance are raising objections against “13” and they have taken measures to submit a motion at the parliament appealing to abolish it.
Defense Ministry Secretary, President’s brother Gottabaya Rajapakse and chauvinists Sinhala movements on behalf of the government are expressing opinions against the “13”.
Minority community parties and leftist parties which are membership parties of the government, is supporting to boost the “13”, however the Sri Lanka Freedom party which is the main party of the government, is continuing to maintain silence without revealing its stance.
Government is evading from this situation by giving statements that contradictions amidst a alliance government is a political democracy tradition.  This clearly affirm that government will show the green flag to make amendments in the “13”

Reports furnish that government is making efforts to implement a bill to grab the land and police powers existing in the “13” before the northern election.
In the issue of “13”, major disorder has emerged in the Sri Lanka political circle, and concerning the “13”, India has focused its utmost attention.
Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Kurdish recently was engaged in a telephone conversation with Sri lanka External Affairs Minister and had warned to refrain from making any amendment in the 13th amendment which is aware.
In this situation if Sri Lanka government attempts to undermine or to abolish the 13th amendment from the constitution, the consequence will be that India would take back Kachchatheevu from Sri Lanka. Concerning this the Delhi high level is strongly discussing.
Kachchatheevu was in the control of India until year 1974, was later handed over to Sri Lanka by the Sirima  Shastri accord by India.
If Sri Lanka interferes with the 13th amendment which was introduced by the India, India certainly will take back Kachchatheevu, is the opinions of political analysts.
Meanwhile Tamil Nadu parties are still voicing against Kachchathevu granted by India to Sri Lanka.

Indian military intelligence visits Jaffna, Vanni

TamilNet[TamilNet, Friday, 31 May 2013, 10:18 GMT]
A team of high-ranking Indian military intelligence officials, led by Indian Armed Forces Intelligence Unit Director General R.N. Singh, visited Jaffna and Vanni on Wednesday and Thursday. The team was received by the genocidal Sinhala military occupying the country of Eezham Tamils. The Indian visit, that took place while Rajapaksa delegation was in Beijing and was signing major agreements on money and defence, follows China’s Vice Intelligence Minister’s visit to Jaffna and Trincomalee in April. Any visit of Indian officials is nowadays considered a jinx and is much feared by Tamils in the island, just as they fear sooth-saying persons coming in the middle of the night with curses from the cremation ground, because of the long history of such Indian visits foretelling escalation of miseries during the war and aftermath, commented news sources in Jaffna.

India and genocidal Sri Lanka have military to military relationship.

The commander of the occupying Sinhala military, Maj. Gen. Mahinda Hathurusinghe, first received the visiting team of Indian military intelligence at Palaali in the Sinhala military zone in Jaffna.

At Palaali, the visiting Indian team marked an important imperial ritual of paying homage at a recently opened memorial for the IPKF that had committed war crimes against Tamils quarter a century ago.

The Indian military doesn’t pay homage anymore at the abandoned memorial, remembering soldiers died in the war against Tipu Sultan, erected by its Madras Regiment at the fort of Sri Rangapatna, commented an academic in Jaffna.

After holding talks with the Sinhala commanders in Jaffna, the intelligence team left for Ki’linochchi. In Vanni the team was received by the commanding officer of the occupying Sinhala military headquartered in Vavuniyaa.

Even though it was said that the visiting team was discussing about ‘humanitarian activities’ taking place in the North, news sources said that there were strict orders from the visiting team to the Sinhala military that no news on the deliberations should be revealed.

Tamil media was not allowed to photograph the visit in Jaffna, but photos of the visit to Vavuniyaa were somehow released to Sinhala media in Colombo. In Jaffna, officials of the Indian diplomatic mission had made many restrictions on the release of news in the local media.

The team was on a visit to get first hand experience of the ground situation, commented news sources.

The presence of Indian military intelligence in Vanni during the genocidal massacre is a widely acknowledged secret among the SL military sources.

But this is the first time after the withdrawal of the IPKF in the early 90s that a high-ranking Indian military intelligence team is making an official and open visit to the island, news sources in Jaffna commented.

Chances of the Thirteenth Amendment survival down to slim and none

JHU leader Champika Ranawaka-300x225

The Thirteenth Amendment which saw passage in Parliament in August 1987 amidst civil chaos and political turmoil, once again has gained unusual attention from political quarters, both international and local. What is even more bewildering is, after accomplishing a military victory of unprecedented scale and crushing all hopes of a Tamil Ealam and after eliminating the last semblance of any militant resistance from the Northern Tamils, the very constitutional modification offered via the Thirteenth Amendment to the people of the North and the East, is now under threat. The victorious Sinhalese politicians led by the fringe elements of the Government Coalition and most unambiguously backed by the military establishment (which is close to the ruling elite) of the country, are now crying out loud to galvanize the hardcore Sinhalese Buddhists of the land towards the abolition of that Constitutional Amendment.
The campaign launched by the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), led by their charismatic leader Champika Ranawaka to get the Thirteenth Amendment abrogated, firstly in Courts of Law and then in Parliament by means of another amendment to the Constitution is yet to receive any public support but surely the coming weeks would show the country if it is so concerned about a constitutional amendment now, especially in the wake of a formidable victory on the battlefield for the Sri Lankan Security Forces four years ago. Maverick Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa, the Minster of Housing too is placing all his bets along with the JHU, although this is not the first time that he is attempting to show the country that his brand of ‘patriotism’ is unique and without precedent. Both the leader of the JHU and Wimal Weerawansa are noteworthy comrades-in-arms of the defense establishment. Both of them enjoy a tremendous amount of support from all those pseudo-patriots who emerged after the ‘War-Victory’ and their collective appeal to the gullible and unsuspecting Sri Lankan village voter might hold more water than any liberal-minded pundit would assert.
Both Weerawansa and Ranawaka were placed first and third respectively in the Colombo district in the last General Elections held in 2010, which fact shows that both enjoy remarkable backing from
Ranil Wickramasinghe
Ranil Wickramasinghe
the Government voters. Weerawansa appeals to the déclassé while Ranawaka has in his pocket the Sinhalese Buddhist middle class that broke away from the United National Party in the wake of its failed attempt to implement the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA), which as a matter of fact signaled the death-knell to the UNP from the indigenous voting population in Sri Lanka. That middle class Sinhalese Buddhist voting bloc, unlike the typical Sinhalese voter whose sympathies generally lie with the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA), is a decisive segment in the population by their very nature of being, not only portrayed as, but in real fact, an influential factor of the country’s voting pattern.
UNP decline
That middle-class managed to convert thousands of UNP supporters to vote for Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2005 and unfortunately for the UNP, they chose to stay that way once the election was over. The revamped war effort engineered by the Rajapaksa regime further assured this class that they had made the right choice not only by the country, but also by the UNP. With the revelations regarding the back-channel activities connected to the signing of the Ceasefire Agreement came to light the UNP’s goose was cooked as far as the Sinhalese Buddhist vote was concerned. More than the war-victory that came about under the Rajapaksa rule, what cemented the departure of this particular Sinhalese Buddhist vote from the UNP was this Ceasefire Agreement.
All factors seem to have conspired against the United National Party and its leader. The CFA, war-victory, Ranil’s personal demeanor especially when he is found among
Lalith Athulathmudali
Lalith Athulathmudali
the public, Mahinda Rajapaksa’s personal charisma, an increasing number of non-Buddhist politicians at the helm of the UNP, totally chaotic organizational structure spearheaded by an incompetent Party General Secretary, lack of grass-root support and lack of acceptable regional leaders have all contributed to the slow but sure decay of the United National Party as a nationally-recognized political heavyweight. The party structure that J R Jayewardene and R Premadasa built with the able and unstinted support of Gamini Dissanayake, Lalith Athulathmudali, Nissanka Wijeratne, Festus Perera, Ronnie de Mel, A C S Hameed, Cyril Mathew and numerous others took only one and half decades to fall flat on the ground. An overwhelmingly popular party that could boast about some stupendous economic and social achievements was reduced to a 35%-political entity, hardly recognized by the Sinhalese-Buddhist majority as their Party.
In this chaotic and messy background, the UNP began to further alienate the majority community both inside and outside Parliament. The Government propaganda machine went to work and therajiv gandhi and JRpicture they painted about the UNP and its leader/s started assuming authenticity both in style and substance. The failure on the part of this mainstream Party contributed largely to the subjective conditions currently prevailing in the country.
The validity of the Thirteenth Amendment is being challenged only in these murky circumstances. When one sets these conditions in the context of numerous but significant other factors that influenced to create the prevalent dilemma about the Thirteenth Amendment, one sees that it is only logical and inevitable that the fringe elements of the Government is only striking because they have realized that the proverbial iron is still hot. In an attempt to eradicate any semblance of a chance of the UNP coming to power, they are in a crusade to ‘kill’ the UNP. As my barber told me the other day, the UNP has ‘expired’.
I have been reiterating over and over again that there is no one or two single factors that are responsible for the unfortunate situation this country is finding itself in today. But the near-demise of the UNP features right on top of all those reasons.
Mahawansa Mindset and Sinhala-Tamil Pacts
One other major contributor towards the present predicament about the Thirteenth Amendment is the Mahawansa mindset that the large majority of our people are trapped in. Consequent upon the war-victory, this mindset has found even more fertile ground for further nourishment and propagation. From our small days, from the time we learnt to read and write in our schools, we have been indoctrinated in the wonders of our kings and ministers. All our historical heroes are the Dutugemunus, Walagmbahus and Vijayabahus. It is not different from other nations’ histories. Each nation takes it upon itself to brainwash (they call it education) the younger generations on their war victories and that practice cannot be helped in the context of building love for Motherland and patriotism.
Yet when gross exaggerations are added to the list of passionately distorted realities, the listener or the student gets totally caught up in the ‘angelic’ view of his or her nation. When this kind of ‘education’ is driven down by an equally passionate teacher, the resultant effect is doubled or trebled and we end up in believing our own embellishments and falsehoods. This happened then and it is happening now. The best example in Sri Lanka’s context is when the brutal war waged against the Northern Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) was called a ‘humanitarian operation’. Such angelic phrases were created by the Goebbels, Stalins and Maos and the likes when they were engaged in campaigns of brutal suppression of ordinary people while they had nothing whatsoever to do with the allegations that were hurled at them. The present Sri Lankan Government has got caught in this trap- a creation of their own- and that is why they find it exceedingly hard to explain themselves to the International community in the various fora such as the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) and other agencies.
Every agreement followed by violence
If one notices the process of Sri Lanka’s recent history, especially after it gained Independence in 1948, each and every occasion when the Sinhalese leaders came to an agreement with those of the Tamils, violence followed even before such agreement or pact could be implemented, each successive time larger in scale than the previous one. In 1958 when the Bandaranaike-
S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike
S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike
Chelvanayagam Pact was signed between the two leaders, Bandaranaike was pressurized to abrogate the Pact by the Sinhalese Buddhist leaders led by Venerable Baddegama Wimalawansa, L H Mettananda and F R Jayasuriya. In 1968, the Dudley-Chelvanayagam Pact too met with the same fate. In fact, the violence that followed claimed the life of a Buddhist Monk opposite the American Embassy. On both these occasions the two Prime Ministers, S W R D Bandaranaike and Dudley Senanayake, both quintessential liberals, did not have the ‘stomach’ to go through the whole process and both Pacts were withdrawn even before they were enacted.
In 1987 all hell broke loose when J R Jayewardene signed the Indo-Lanka accord with Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and the entire country broke up in flames. Even J R’s own Prime Minister Premadasa and National Security Minister Athulathmudali were openly against the “Accord” and what ensued gave rise to a spate of violence unleashed by the Janatha Vimukti Peramuna led by Rohana Wijeweera and his gang. On all those occasions what stood out was the fact that the Sinhalese Buddhists led by Buddhist Monks ran amok on the streets of Sri Lanka and attacked Tamil civilians who had nothing whatsoever to do with either the contents or the process of the “Accords” that were signed. The inner rage that the ordinary Sinhalese Buddhists unleashed on these innocent civilians stands today as a shameful act of murder and larceny. No Sinhalese leader had the guts to openly declare that it was wrong.
In such a context the Thirteenth Amendment’s survival seems unlikely, unless the President shows real desire to do justice, disregarding the tremendous pressure that is being built around him. So far he has not shown any wish to go in that direction. He is himself engrossed in the very orgy of triumphalism and self-glorification. The sense of self-righteousness that has captivated the entire Government ranks is being treated as carte blanch to engage in anything, from corruption to nepotism to condoning mayhem from his own disciples. The external pressure that is being brought about by the United States and Indian governments and the Tamil Diaspora might prevail at the end. And that seems to be the only ‘slim’ chance that the Thirteenth Amendment would survive and if not, the chances are none.

Political Machinations: The Norwegian Need For Transparency

Colombo TelegraphBy Rajiva Wijesinha -May 31, 2013 |
Prof Rajiva Wijesinha MP
I have long had faith in the Norwegian government and its representatives in Sri Lanka, even though – as I have always made clear to them – I thought that Eric Solheim was a shifty character and should not have been trusted. However, though he was not I think an honest broker as far as the 2002 Cease Fire Agreement and the negotiations that followed were concerned, I believe the Norwegian Mission here more than made up for his lapses.
At least I believe that is true after the initial period, when Jon Westbord was Ambassador. He was unlike Solheim however in that his motives were misplaced idealism, rather than personal advancement. Westborg had after all been in Sri Lanka in the eighties, when elements in the Jayewardenegovernment, led by Cyril Mathew, had encouraged and indeed participated in attacks on Tamils, and his mindset was governed therefore by total sympathy for the Tamil cause.
Even in the eighties he had been what might be termed an activist, in that he had supported a lot of colonization in the Vanni by Tamils of Indian origin. I don’t think he saw this as a deliberate attempt to influence the demographics of the area, but rather as providing solace to those who had been attacked in their homes. After all it was the Indian Tamils who suffered most in both 1977 and 1981, despite the fact that Mr Thondaman was solidly behind the government by the latter date.
That indeed is why I have found false – as well as unacceptable, which it certainly is – the claim of Mathew apologists that the Tamils deserved what they got because they had espoused separatism and they did not speak out against this. The Indian Tamils supported government, but they still suffered, making it clear that the perpetrators of violence were simply vicious thugs.
I should note that this violence – and Mr Westborg’s sympathy – did contribute to demographic change in the Vanni. While I believe it would be totally wrong for government to engage in colonization schemes now to settle Sinhalese in the North, they should certainly develop a better recording system of the numbers of those of Indian origin who did settle in the North in the seventies and eighties. This would make it clear that sponsored colonization has been an ongoing process, and to blame only government for such activities is erroneous.
I say this because I was astonished to find so many who spoke Sinhalese in Manik Farm in 2009. The explanation was that they had come from the Hill Country. I still come across many such now in my meetings at Divisional Secretariats, and I find that they are particularly affected by land problems, given that they did not get title deeds when they moved to the Vanni during that period. They should certainly be provided with land security now, having spent so much time there, but it should also be made clear that using them in order to make claims about traditional homelands is just plain nonsense.
Westborg, as I have explained, had his own agenda, but his successors were I believe balanced in their approach, as was the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, which scrupulously recorded all violations of the Cease Fire Agreement, making it clear that it was the LTTE that was predominantly guilty. Though some younger members – as their seniors explained to me – came out with erroneously ideal notions, they soon learned the truth about the LTTE. And most of them did their job honestly, as was shown for instance when they found the weapons on the ship that the then government had wanted the navy to set free, when they were trying to have it searched.
Mr Brattskar, whom I met only briefly, most memorably when he came back from the Vanni to brief MinisterNimal Siripala de Silva and myself on his last visit to the Tigers, was one reason I think the Tigers withdrew from the talks, because he made it clear that the Sri Lankan government had every right to raise the issue of child recruitment. The Wickremesinghe government had not raised any issues itself, a habit that Prof G L Peiris brought into negotiations with the TNA too, a sure recipe for disaster. But the Rajapaksa government, at least in those days, was made of sterner stuff, and the Tigers realized that they would not have an easy ride in discussions, with the Norwegians also making it clear that they could not simply rule complaints out.
Mr Brattskar too it was who told us what we already knew, but which the aid agencies then working in the North had kept scrupulously quiet about, namely that the Tigers had been recruiting one member from each family, and were beginning to demand a second. It was clear from his despair that he realized they were intransigent, and that the Peace Process was dead, though it was only formally abrogated a few months later, after the SLMM had made one more attempt to persuade the LTTE Peace Secretariat to talk to us.
Brattskar’s successor inherited a difficult situation, but handled it well, as did his successor, who had the merit of having been his Deputy, so she understood the situation thoroughly. However it seems to have been during their time that the association with the Bodhu Bala Sena, which Wimal Weerawansa has highlighted, began.
The explanation we have now been given is that there was simply an effort to engage with monks who had been hostile to the Norwegians, and that is why contacts were initiated. But, given that this engagement involved sponsorship for a visit to Norway, one can’t help feeling that further enticements might have been made available if a suitable response was forthcoming. I hope therefore that the Norwegians will ensure that a full inquiry is made into what happened, and whether any funds were provided by any Norwegian source, to the BBS or individual members of it.

Sobitha Proposals, Ranil, Mahinda And The BBS

Colombo TelegraphAbusus non tollit usum  - Wrong use does not preclude proper use.
As a Christian Sinhalese Sri Lankan , University educated by the Sri Lankan tax payer and also as a person who has used this knowledge in the fight against the anti democratic forces that plague Sri Lanka, I take great joy in the actions of Ven Sobitha thera and the NMSJ especially at a time when some of his fellow colleagues have taken to the streets to take offence with the Muslim and Christians. Sobitha thera has used his influence and the influence of Buddhism in Sri Lanka to bring forth what is important to our society today hence the above Latin phrase. The Buddhist clergy and doctrine have a role to play in the governance of Sri Lanka but what is sad is groups such as BBS and other similar groups have basically got the wrong end of the stick! rather than using the doctrine by the en lighted one to enhance our position as nation and country within and outside our shores they are using this influence to isolate and to destroy our nation.
What they have failed to understand which Sobitha Thera and the NMSJ has understood is that it is when all of our rights are protected that our individual rights will be upheld a truth that not only the BBS but LTTE and its proxy groups of today don’t seem to understand. There is a saying that “mountains will labour and a mouse will be born” which is what all these groups can achieve even for their core support base; history has shown nothing tangible is achieved by these groups even to the core group whom they confess to represent; Hitler the German people, LTTE the Tamil people.
The post independence political journey of our country is fast coming to the point of  ”no return” where the pilot of the state has no option but to continue by hook or by crook; leaders with vision and who heed to good advice soon realise this and are quick change course before they reach this point thus avoiding being sent into political wilderness and taking the whole population of the country sometimes with them. Recent world events show how leaders get to this point very quickly and have paid sometimes with their lives.
Sri Lankan’s have always put trust in people rather than in a system to deliver justice, development, peace ,stability and fair play in the distribution of wealth; however each passing term of government from post independence have abused this trust and the only current way to turn this tide is to support a system that offers a very meaning full alternative which is based on a “system” rather than a person; the proposals by the NMSJ has offered all of us Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and Burgers the principals of forming a united front to bring about this change this front is not UNP, JVP, TNA or UNFP it is a system which guarantees the rights of every one.
As a student of politics and as a campaigner in the West for the rights of all Sri Lankan’s I am indeed proud of the proposals put forward by NMSJ of course these proposals are nothing new, we all know them because this what politicians have promised us over the years at each and every election we also know the objections as these are the same lame reasons which they give us at the end of each term as to why they did not keep to the promises.
The proposal aim to break the culture of absolute power and absolute power as we see and know corrupts absolutely. I think we all agree at least the normal hard working people of Sri Lanka that we need to resolve the issues of corruption, naptiuism and Lawless of this country it is only then that transformation can earnestly begin to re-address the economic issues that underpin and act as the fuel for the above evils, otherwise the so called development will be nothing more than a doted set of white elephant projects; the proposals put forward offer a very quick way of breaking the current political cycle that is plaguing and draining the country of its life blood. I am confident that if Ven Sobitha Thera and NMSJ is able to see this plough through and give leadership to it long enough they will achieve this, they have too as this is the only way!
Great freedom fighters always fought for others as they realised very quickly that is only through the preservation of others that one is preserved. Dr King in one of its speeches says this “All I’m saying is simply this, that all life is interrelated. And we are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny — whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. For some strange reason I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality”
Rewind back to 2005 president Rajapaksa at his inauguration speech had among other things this to say ;
“Political power is not a privilege but only a temporary trust. I am not the master but the trustee of the country. I pledge to defend by all means the country you entrusted to me. I will act according to this pledge. From now on Mahinda Rajapakse as President will not be a leader that belongs exclusively to any single party or group. I will not discriminate against anyone on the grounds of politics, colour, race or religion. My political policy from now on will be the rule of law and protection of human rights”
Honestly looking at this in 2013 have we not fallen sort of the above standard? of course we have but for this is it only President Rajapakse to blame ? or does the system not allow for such high standards of government?  How is it that a system of government allow when people talk about human right failings that we should call them terrorist or unpatriotic? when as above the political policy of the president is the protection of human rights? Not only under this government but under the previous government President Rajapakse himself was called a traitor when he travelled to Geneva in 1988 to bring to the attention of the same world body the details of the missing Sinhalese youth for this president Rajapaksa was called a traitor by the UNP MP’s in parliament .
I wonder if Mr Wickramasinghe, John Amratunge and Lakshman Krialla objected to him being called this? if they have not are they also not guilty of the same crime of preventing the course of international justice with they accuse president Rajapaksa of today? It is very clear the social, political, economics and justice problem in Sri Lanka lies fairly and squarely in the system the government has the power to change it but it will only happen if we the masses cry out for it.
As a nation that loves teledrams the script for the political teledrama has not seen a script change for a long time only the actors have changed the current tragedy is that the actors have also not changed. The solution their fore is only one; which is to change the script the proposals for NMSJ aim to do just this
The only way to proceed from a point of no return in terms of establishing good governance and democratic rights would be a full overhaul starting at the top this means the executive presidency. If not the only thing we could reap would be what we will need to sow to keep the system running which are the seed of suspicion, divide and rule use violence in trying to control as much as possible of the lives of population this was the same under the British as it is seen today; Support and patronage to groups such as BBS is also part of this extremist groups are undoubtedly part of this act of divide a rule.
In the Merchant of Venice, Shylock asks: “Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions; fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means… as a Christian is? If you prick us do we not bleed?” We all know in our hearts of hearts that their is no basis to divide on race color or religion yet we do so because it human nature to blame someone else for one’s problems we do this as individuals communities and countries. A proper system will allow us to move away from this culture and take responsibility as country, community and individuals for our lives.
If we are to rediscover our country we need to re-start the fire of this of common humanity; to all community leaders I beg you work towards rekindling the common humanity and spend less time in trying to be patriots to your own community. The proposals by the NMSJ I think offers all of us this opportunity.

The United States limited ‘counterterrorism cooperation and training’ with Sri Lanka in 2012 due to allegations of human rights abuses, according to the State Department’s ‘Country Reports on Terrorism 2012‘, which was released on Thursday.
In the overview on Sri Lanka, the report stated,
U.S. Department of State - Great Seal“Counterterrorism cooperation and training with the United States in 2012 was limited, however, due to statutory and policy restrictions based on concerns about alleged past human rights abuses committed by Sri Lankan security forces”.
The report went on to say,
“The Sri Lankan government claimed that it continued to uncover abandoned weapons and explosives in areas of the country formerly controlled by the LTTE. Although there were no known LTTE activities in Sri Lanka in 2012, the government asserted that peaceful protests at Jaffna University in November were organized by students trained by overseas LTTE supporters and made several arrests.”
It was noted that Sri Lanka was “a proactive partner with the U.S. Departments of State, Homeland Security, Defense, and Energy on securing its maritime border”, adding that the US Coast Guard had trained the Sri Lankan Navy and Coast Guard in October last year.
The LTTE was still designated as a “Foreign Terrorist Organisation”, with the report noting,
“there have been no known attacks in Sri Lanka that could verifiably be attributed to the LTTE since the end of the war”.

New Delhi: The Asian Athletics Championships have been switched to the city of Pune in July after Chennai refused to host any Sri Lankans.
New Delhi was considered as an alternative but the logistics for the July 3-7 event worked better for Pune, Athletics Federation of India president Adille Sumariwala told The Associated Press by telephone on Thursday.
Chennai, the capital of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, was ruled out in February after the state chief minister Jayaram Jayalalitha said hosting the event would anger people in her province because of alleged atrocities against the ethnic Tamil minority during the civil war in Sri Lanka.
Pune replaces Chennai as venue for Asian Athletics Championships
The Asian Athletics Championships have been switched to the city of Pune in July after Chennai refused to host any Sri Lankans.
"We did not consider Chennai as a venue once the government refused to host the event. Sports is one thing and public sentiments another. We should understand that it would not be possible to organize the meet there," said Sumariwala, India's top sprinter during the 1980s.
Sri Lankan cricketers contracted by Indian Premier League franchises were also not allowed to play in Chennai this year.
The Sri Lankan government and now-defeated Tamil Tiger rebels have been accused of serious human rights violations during the 25-year war, especially in its final stages.
According to a UN report, tens of thousands of civilians were killed in the five months before fighting ended in 2009.
