Vaiko demands referendum for Tamils in Sri Lanka

article_imageMarumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko has called for an independent international investigation into war crimes allegations agaisnt Sri Lanka and also demanded that the Tamils in Sri Lanka should be allowed a referendum to decide their fate according to online ANI report dated April 7.

"There should be an independent international investigation about the crime of genocide committed by Sri Lankan government of Mahinda Rajapakshe. And the settlements of the army and police who’re deployed in the traditionally Tamil areas should be thrown out," the agency quoted Vaiko as having said.

"They should be sent out. There should be a referendum that should be conducted under the supervision of United Nations, and in that referendum, modality should be worked out so that the Tamils living all over the world should be allowed to exercise their franchise in their respective countries where they are living," he added

Vaiko also accused Congress party-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government of being a co accused in the war crimes committed by the Sri Lankan government.

"I do accuse the UPA government of Dr. Manmohan Singh and directed by Sonia Gandhi as a co-accused in the crime of genocide because they provided all logistic support, military support and they supplied other military weapons enabling the Sri Lankan government to commit the crime of genocide," he said.

The Tamil Nadu assembly had earlier adopted a resolution, moved by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, urging the Centre to take firm steps against Colombo till the ‘suppression’ of Tamils was stopped and those responsible for """genocide and war crimes""" faced a credible international probe.

The resolution came close on the heels of Jayalalithaa writing to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying India should boycott the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting to be held in Colombo in November this year.

Chidambaram slams BJP for no support on Sri Lankan Tamils issue

Chennai: Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram slammed BJP for not supporting the UPA government’s efforts to pass a resolution in Parliament on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue and rejected accusations hurled at Congress that it did not “support” the cause.
Addressing a public meeting here, Chidambaram explained the initiatives the Congress took for passing a resolution in Parliament.     The government convened an all-party meet to discuss the issue, but BJP, Left Parties, Janata Dal, Akali Dal, Shiv Sena, Telugu Desam opposed a passage of resolution.

“When we were trying to pass a resolution, BJP Parliamentary Party Leader Sushma Swaraj said there was no necessity to discuss it and there is no need to conduct an all-party meet. Friends, you should understand that there is only one party in New Delhi which is ready to pass a resolution in support of Sri Lankan Tamils. If BJP or some other party was in power (at New Delhi), what would have happened?” he asked during his 90-minute speech.
Chidambaram, who outlined the talks Congress held with DMK on the issue, charged that the Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu were trying to make Congress a “scapegoat” over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.
“I strongly condemn your statement that Congress is not in support of Sri Lankan Tamils. I respect DMK for supporting the Sri Lankan Tamils. I support the AIADMK. But, I strongly object that Congress is not in support of the Tamils in Sri Lanka”, he asserted. Continuing his tirade against the BJP for appointing Amit Shah, a former Gujarat Home Minister and close aide of Chief Minister Narendra Modi, as its general secretary, Chidambaram asked how he had been selected when he was allegedly involved in an encounter case.

The Mervyn – Malaka Pestilence

The Sunday Leader

Minister Mervyn Silva with Hasitha Madawala and The incident took place close to this motor vehicle
The acquittal of Malaka Silva in the case of the alleged assault on an Army Intelligence Officer, and the granting of bail to Sarath Edirisinghe alias Singappuru Sarath and Saman Nishaman two of the five main suspects in the murder of Hasitha Madawala (Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha member), implies that any suspected criminals connected to Public Relations and Public Affairs Minister Mervyn Silva are released in next to no time.
This has been evident in the past also, when Malaka Silva was accused of many acts of intimidation and unlawful behaviour, legal action was not taken because he is the son of Minister Mervyn Silva. The Minister’s mantle of protection extends not only to his kith and kin but to the near and dear friends of his offspring who have been accused of criminal acts.
The blight that is Malaka
Malaka is notorious for his intimidating behavior especially in nightclubs and it was not so long ago – on September 9, 2012 that he and his friend Rehan Wijeratne together with Ministerial Security Division (MSD) personnel went on a rampage in the JAIC Hilton car park where they assaulted an Army Intelligence Officer Major Chandana Pradeep and a Corporal.
Police report on the murder and Post Mortem Report
Although the video footage from JAIC Hilton’s CCTV has clearly shown how the army Major and the Corporal were attacked by Malaka, Rehan and the MSD personnel, it was evident that the Sri Lanka Army did not stand by their staff but followed a deaf and dumb attitude instead.
Although the Major first stated that it was Malaka, Rehan and some security officers who assaulted him and Malaka was accused of taking the Major’s service firearm and the mobile phone, due to pressure mounted on him by Minister Mervyn Silva, Major Chandana Pradeep had to submit an affidavit to courts claiming that he was not assaulted by Malaka and his group but by some other group.
“It is a well-known secret as to how Minister Mervyn Silva acted fast when it was reported that his son had assaulted an Army Major and that the army officer has sustained severe head injuries and was undergoing treatment at the Accident Ward of the National Hospital. If not for the complete turn the Army Intelligence Officer took because of the pressure from Minister Silva, it would have been a tough time for Malaka. Knowing what the consequences would be, Major Chandana Pradeep later submitted an affidavit claiming that it was not Malaka Silva that assaulted him and could not remember who his attacker was,” an army officer said on conditions of anonymity.
As a result of not having any evidence to prove Malaka’s involvement in the assault, the Attorney General (AG) advised the courts that there was insufficient evidence to proceed against Malaka, Rehan and the rest and as a result the court acquitted all the accused last week.
Malaka has an interesting record of assault and battery. In September 2007, Malaka was accused of assaulting Chaminda Senasinghe, brother of UNP Parliamentarian Sujeewa Senasinghe with a pistol butt at the Bistro Latino Restaurant. In that instance too no action was taken against the Minister’s son.
It was also reported in 2005, that Malaka together with two of the MSD bodyguards pleaded guilty to attacking Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) officers who were on a drug raid at My Kind of Place at the Taj Samudra Hotel in 1995.
Malaka was charged with intimidation and obstruction of the PNB team which was on a narcotics raid with a court order on a tip-off to arrest an ‘Ecstasy’ dealer who was said to have been trafficking the drug at the hotel. The PNB officers who were in civvies were leaving the nightclub after the raid, when Malaka threatened them at gunpoint and assaulted them with the help of MSD bodyguards.
However the police later released Malaka and the MSD officers claiming that there was no evidence against them.
This has raised many questions amongst the general public.
“What would have happened to normal citizens in this country if they committed such crimes over and over again? Leave alone whether they would be allowed to go free without any charges being brought, can we expect bail to be granted for even a simple robbery. Even the law enforcement authorities now come under threat if they do not heed the instructions of politicians,” said an angry Attorney-at-Law in Kiribathgoda. To her, Malaka is a curse to the country. The manner in which Malaka Silva has gone on rampage on many occasions and how his father Minister Mervyn Silva has got him freed from the legal process using his political power is a bad example.
“This notorious son knows very well that whatever he does his father is there to rescue him. Imagine if Mervyn Silva is no more in power and his notorious son once again engaged in similar crimes, who will come to rescue him from this legal process? Had Mervyn Silva allowed the police to act impartially when his son first committed a crime and allowed him to serve in the remand for few years, he would have learnt a good lesson and would not have committed crimes repeatedly. A father of the caliber of Mervyn Silva is also a curse to the country,” she added.
Mervyn the scourge of Kelaniya
Meanwhile the 4th and 5th suspects of the Madawala murder Sarath Edirisinghe alias Singappuru Sarath and Saman Nishaman respectively were granted bail on Tuesday, April 2 by the Gampaha High Court Judge. Following this unexpected granting of bail, people in Kelaniya and Kiribathgoda are now living in fear that the suspects would exact revenge from them. Singappuru Sarath was the Parliamentary Affairs Secretary to Minister Mervyn Silva while Saman Nishaman was the Coordinating Secretary to the Minister.
Both Singappuru Sarath and Saman Nishaman were taken into custody for aiding and abetting the killers of Hasitha Madawala. People in the area alleged that it was Minister Mervyn Silva who had got these two suspects released on bail even though there is evidence that these two men were directly involved in Madawala’s murder.
“The 1st suspect Rangana Perera who killed Madawala had told the CID that it was his mother’s brother – Singappuru Sarath who had given him the murder weapon and wanted him to kill Madawala. According to Rangana the weapon which is a T 81/ 01 automatic machine gun was in the possession of Singappuru Sarath. Isn’t that alone concrete evidence to keep him behind bars rather than taking him as a state witness and granting him bail together with the 5th suspect,” queried a businessman in Kelaniya who wished to remain anonymous.
According to the source, Rangana had also told the CID that it was Saman Nishaman who had taken him (Rangana) and the motorcyclist who rode the motor cycle to kill Madawala to Negombo to a safe place following the assassination.
“It is said that the 5th suspect Saman Nishaman provided transport for the motorcyclist and the suspected killer to go into hiding in Negombo. It was also said that Singappuru Sarath had bought his nephew Rangana an air ticket to go to Singapore the following day and given him US$ 1000 for his expenses,” said the source.
Meanwhile according to the police ‘B’ report submitted to the Mahara Magistrate Court, the two helmets worn by the motorcyclist and the suspected killer at the time of the murder had been found at Samanala Restaurant in Kiribathgoda which is owned by Singappuru Sarath.
“The ‘B’ report further states that when Rangana Perera wanted his uncle Singappuru Sarath (to take both him (Rangana) and the 2nd suspect Ashen Chathuranga (the motorcyclist) to a hiding place, it was his uncle who had called the 5th suspect Saman Nishaman and asked that they be taken to Negombo,” said the source.
He further said that it was Singappuru Sarath’s brother-in-law (his sister’s husband) and father of the 1st suspect Rangana who had provided information on the whereabouts of Madawala.
“It is said Rangana’s father had followed Hasitha Madawala on this particular day in his yellow coloured Bajaj Three-wheeler bearing registration number WP QM 9614 and provided the information to his son Rangana so that he could assassinate Madawala,” the source added.
Furthermore the ‘B’ report stated that the murder weapon T 81/ 01 7.62mm together with two ammunition pouches and 49 bullets were found hidden in the ceiling of the residence of Rangana’s father.
Meanwhile questions have been raised as to how Mervyn Silva was able to get bail set for two of his close associates (the 5th and the 6th suspects) within 54 days of the murder.
“This was the same case with Ann Perera. She was taken into custody on the day of Hasitha Madawala’s funeral for keeping a hand grenade and two swords in her residence. Ann Perera in her statement to the police had stated that she bought the hand grenade and the two swords from one Harshana in Pethiyagoda for Rs.50,000. Although the suspect had originally admitted that she had these weapons in her possession it was a complete surprise when she was later released on the claim that she did not have any weapons in her possession. If Mervyn Silva does not allow the law enforcement authorities to carry out impartial investigations, it is up to President Mahinda Rajapaksa to take stern action against Minister Silva,” the source said.
Meanwhile according to the Post Mortem Report on Madawala, three distorted bullets were recovered at the autopsy and sent to the Government Analyst for forensic analysis. The Report states that the killer had fired at Madawala’s chest and abdomen to kill him instantly.
A slippery slope to hell
Residents of Kelaniya and Kiribathgoda claim that since Mervyn Silva was removed from the post of Organizer and with the arrest of the murder suspects; prostitution, extortions and drug trafficking had declined considerably as the Kelaniya police was taking stern action against criminals.
“It is good that Kelaniya where Gautama Buddha once placed his feet is now returning to a peaceful city. From the time we heard that Singappuru Sarath and Saman Nishaman who were engaged in extortion, prostitution, murder and drug trafficking were bailed out we have been wondering whether the peaceful atmosphere we enjoyed for the past three months will come to a complete standstill. Will the police once again help these two suspects to engage in their illegal businesses with the backing of Minister Mervyn Silva? Unless these thugs are sent from Kelaniya it will be so difficult for us to save the younger generation,” the source said.
Meanwhile people in Kiribathgoda claim that Minister Mervyn Silva had wanted a leading departmental store to gift 1000 white saris to be given to 1000 kiri ammawaru recently.
“Mervyn Silva is the only Minister in the cabinet who does not carry a purse with him. Where ever he goes he will take whatever he wants free of charge. This time the Minister has gone to a leading departmental store and wanted 1000 white saris to be gifted to 1000 kiri ammawaru on his birthday, which fell on March 25. In addition he had asked Chairman, Peliyagoda Pradeshiya Sabah Nihal Ananda to provide 5000 pieces of milk rice. The Sweet House was given an order to provide all the sweet meats. Although all these people claim that Minister Mervyn Silva has promised to settle the bills it will never happen. This kiri danaya has been offered at the Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya for 1000 kiri ammawaru and the chief guest was the First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa,” said the sources.
Army did not stand by its Intelligence Officer
It is a disgrace that the Army did not stand by its Intelligence Officer who did so much for the country especially during the war”.
An inside source in the Sri Lanka Army on condition of anonymity said that they were disheartened at the way the Army acted when one of their Intelligence Officers was severely beaten by Public Relations and Public Affairs Minister Mervyn Silva’s son Malaka Silva and former Minister Mano Wijeratne’s son Rehan Wijeratne at JAIC Hilton.
Following the release of Malaka Silva and Rehan Wijeratne without being charged, a high ranking army officer said that it was disheartening to see how the Army acted when Major Chandana Pradeep was assaulted.
“When the Army has the original copy of the JAIC Hilton CCTV footage which clearly shows how Malaka and his thugs were assaulting Major Chandana Pradeep and another Corporal why can’t the Army taken legal action? We saw the video footage and that is why I am saying that the assault was clearly visible. But I have a feeling that the JAIC Hilton may have deleted their copy” a senior army officer on condition of anonymity told The Sunday Leader.
According to him, the Army took a back seat when it was reported that the Major was at the JAIC Hilton to meet Nalin Fonseka who is a casino businessman in the country.
“Mervyn had apologized to Major Chandana Pradeep for what had happened to him at the hands of his son Malaka and promised to secure his job if he was willing to give an affidavit saying that Malaka was not involved in the attack. Knowing what would happen to him and his job, Major Pradeep gave an affidavit and did not identify the suspects at the identification parade,” said the source.
Meanwhile, according to the source, Major Chandana Pradeep had to face disciplinary action and his seniority has been reduced. “Although he worked as an intelligence officer who did so much for the country during the war, he has now been sent to Ceylon Light Infantry Unit (CLI) and is now serving in a camp supposedly somewhere in Vavuniya or Medawachchiya. This is what has happened to one of our brilliant intelligent officers,” the source observed.

‘I Was Sent Back When I Went To Meet Lt. Colonel Gotabaya To Plead The Release Of My Sons’ – A Mother

Colombo TelegraphBy Colombo Telegraph -April 7, 2013
Ceylon Today newspaper on Sunday published a harrowing tale of a mother whose two teenage sons were abducted by the military on December 13, 1989 and how she was turned back when she went to see then military coordinating officer of Matale, Lt Colonel Gotabaya Rajapaksa to plead for the release of her two detained sons. Her sons never came home again and Gotabaya Rajapaksa later left the army and domiciled in the United States of America. He returned to Sri Lanka upon the election of his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa and is now the powerful secretary to the ministry of defence. We reproduced the full story below, which first appeared in Ceylon Today dated April 7, 2013.
“We were at a loss. Here, Mahinda Rajapaksa was campaigning on behalf of the children who had  been abducted, and I could not believe that his brother was in the Army at the same time,” the mother said.
A grieving mother of two teenage sons who were abducted by the Army in 1989, narrates how she was stopped and sent back when she went to meet then Military Coordinating Officer (MCO) for Matale, Lt. Col. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa - Top Left
The two teenage sons of K.G. Kamalawathi were snatched by the soldiers who arrived at her residence during a notorious ‘military round up’ of local youth on 13 December 1989. The two teenagers, Susantha Janaka (18) and Rohana Nishantha (17), were GCE Advanced Level students at Science College and Vijaya Vidyalaya, Matale.
The two boys were having their lunch when the military unceremoniously entered their home at Warakanda Watta, Ukuwela, Matale, and took them to the Rest House Camp, near Vijaya Vidyalaya, which was located in the vicinity of the current mass graveat the backyard of the Matale Hospital, from where 154 skeleton remains dating back to 1986-89 as stated in the investigations, had been uncovered.
“Thirteen other boys from the village were also taken on by the Army that day,” recalls Kamalawathi.
“When my children were taken by the Army, I followed them. They were taken to the Rest House Camp, located near Vijaya Vidyalaya. I asked that I be allowed to talk to my sons, but the soldiers refused.”
Kamalawathi - the mother
Kamalawathi visited the Army camp the following day and once again she had been denied permission to see her sons.
“On the third day, a soldier read out from a list the names of the children who had been held in the camp. Some names had been cut off with a red pen and the names of my two sons had also been cut off, in red,” she said.
Kamalawathi had arrived in Matale only four months before, after being driven away from Pulmudai by the Tamil Tigers.
“My husband was dead and I was looking after four children on my own,” she explained.
Kamalawathi had pleaded with a soldier, who she remembers as U.P.R Perera, to be allowed to see her sons. He had gone into the camp and had returned to tell her that her two sons were kept in the camp, but she could not be allowed to see them.
No one to turn to
A grieving widowed mother, who was new to Matale, she had no one to turn to, for help.
It was at that point she had come to know that Nandimithra  Ekanayake, now a minister of the current government, was helping the families of the disappeared.
She sought his help and he had promised to do ‘whatever he could,’ recalls Kamalawathi.
Rohana Nishantha
Nandimitra Ekanayake had subsequently told her that he sent his secretary to the Rest House Camp and that her two sons had been held there.
Later, he told her to go and meet the Military Coordinating Officer who was identified as Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
“We were at a loss. Here, Mahinda Rajapaksa was campaigning on behalf of the children who had  been abducted, and I could not believe that his brother was in the Army at the same time,” she said.
However, she decided to go and meet him. Nandimithra had told her that he had contacted Gotabhaya Rajapaksa over the two detained youth.
“But, when I went to meet him, I was stopped at the gate by a soldier called Corporal Silva. He told me I could not meet the MCO and I was ordered to leave the place,” she said.
Devastated, Kamalawathi continued to visit the  Rest House camp every day from the day her children had been taken by the Army.
The soldiers had ‘tricked’ her by sending her to different camps that dotted Matale at the time, claiming that her two sons were transferred from one  camp to another.
She pleaded for help from the Red Cross and wrote to UN agencies for help, some of which acknowledged the receipt of her letters. But, no one could get her children released from military custody. Months later, some local boys were released from military custody. They told her that they, along with her sons, had been taken to the ‘Red Bana Camp,’ and that they also spent time in a military camp, which was operating from Vijaya Vidyalaya, where the Gajaba Regiment was alleged to have operated a torture chamber.
Susantha Janaka
However, her two sons never returned and Kamalawathi, shattered and helpless, had given up on her search.
Later, when the Chandrika Kumaratunga administration offered death certificates for the disappeared youth, she refused to accept death certificates for her two sons.
“I am coming forward now to tell the story because I want justice for my sons. I don’t know whether justice will ever be delivered,” she said.
Several years after the abduction of her two sons, Alick Aluvihare, the UNP strongman at the time in Matale had contacted Kamalawathi.
“He asked me why I did not tell him about my sons. He could have saved them, he said. But how could I seek help from those who commissioned the crime. It was they who had authorized those crimes,” she added. By now, she may know that it was not only the  Aluvihares who were behind the incident. There are others too, some of who still remain all powerful.
‘It could have been an exception’
When Ceylon Today contacted Minister Nandimithra Ekanayake, he said he could not remember this particular incident involving Mrs.  Kamalawathi, but added that he took up ‘countless’ cases of disappearances of local youth at that time.
“I was the only MP elected from the Opposition; the other four parliamentarians were from the UNP,” he said.
He also said Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the Military Coordinating Officer of Matale at that time, had been very ‘cooperative’ (towards him) and ‘kind’ to the detained youth.
Even those youth who committed ‘the worst offences’ had been sent to rehabilitation camps, he said, adding, “That particular instance, (Kamalawathi’s) could have been an exception.”

Govt. releasing murder suspects poses threats to the police

Lanka-e-News-07.April.2013,
http://www.lankaenews.com/English/images/logo.jpg11.55PM) The Rajapakse regime released two main suspects released exonerating them of all charges via the Attorney general in connection with the murder of a mother and daughter at Kotakathena , Ratnapura . Due to this illegal action of the regime , the police officers who were engaged in the investigations and the witnesses are under grave threats to their lives.

According to inside information division of Lanka e news, following the release of these suspects on the intervention of the government itself , the police officers who are in mortal fear have either asked for transfers from their present station , or if they don’t get the transfers , they are preparing to leave the service. As the threats are also being posed to the witnesses , they too are in a fear psychosis.

The two suspects who were released by the MaRa government were : Godakawela local body UPFA member L M Dharmasiri , and Sanath Nandana alias Chooti malli. What was most rudely shocking was the applause and welcome accorded including lighting crackers to these murder suspects by the government stooges of Godakawela,Kuriwita , Ratnapura districts as though they have come back after conquering a country and are war heroes.

The local body member Dharmasiri is the co ordinating secretary of Minister John Seneviratne . Latter kept the suspect hidden to avert his arrest at that time , and when the media raised a hue and cry , the Minister in fear , stated he had not hidden him , and arranged for Dharmasiri to surrender .

Both these murderers were released not based on court verdicts but on the verdicts of the ‘Kekille’ King’s Kangaroo court. It is noteworthy that one of the suspects in this double murder was identified by the witnesses in the court identification parade. In such circumstances with such a B report , in a true court of justice , a suspect cannot be released by the Attorney general let alone by god. Despite this , prior to the illegal release order given to these suspects , the defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse who had earned a notoriety locally and internationally as a criminal mastermind had summoned the IGP , the notorious DIG Anura Senanayake , CID Director and the AG’s department Buvaneka Aluvihara and ordered that these suspects shall be released.

Gotabaya had told the group , Seneviratne is threatening to resign from the government if the suspects are not released , and it is being alleged that Seneviratne is given step motherly treatment while Pavithra Wanniarachchi is being pampered . Besides , there is also room for Seneviratne to join with Chandrika , Gotabaya had pointed out. When the IGP had explained the suspect who had been identified in the identification parade cannot be released , and that the CCD had recorded the statement that the suspect had been identified in the identification parade , Gotabaya had flown into a rage and screamed , ‘ are you one of them working against the government?’

The IGP had then cringed and said . ‘ no Sir, I was only telling that to inform you about it .’ Anura Senanayake had immediately said, ‘ I shall look after those statements at the CCD, ’ while the AG Dept. Buvaneka had produced a file to Gotabaya which revealed all necessary action that had been taken to release the murderers.

Following the instructions of Gotabaya , the DIG Anura Senanayake has got down all the registers from the CCD and the Ratnapura police where the murder investigations were recorded , and amended the statements of the suspects. The registers after the amendments had been returned yesterday, after retaining the page where the signatures of the suspects are , and the new pages with the amendments had been put back in the registers in a manner that alterations and interpolations cannot be noticed.

It is significant to note that never in the history of SL , there have occurred such illegal interpolations and amendments distorting police records specially by the direct involvement of a government to rescue murderers. It is very unfortunate that these treacheries of this evil corrupt government renders it impossible for a government that comes into power subsequently to take legal action against the suspects.

According to reports reaching Lanka e news , the Rajapakse regime had released during the last three years 18 murderers this way exonerating them of all charges. Mind you , similarly , 9 suspects who were charged with corruption and fraudulent misappropriation of state funds to the tune of Rs. 150 million were released exonerating them of all charges by this same regime that is a byword for lawlessness and has become notorious for its camaraderie with corrupt and criminal elements.

To mark the fourth anniversary of the ending of Sri Lanka's civil war, in May 2009, translator Lakshmi Holmström introduces some of the most powerful Tamil poetry to emerge from the 26 year long conflict, in which an estimated 70,000 people were killed as militant Tamil Tigers fought to establish a separate Tamil state in the north of the island.
These poems bear witness to the atrocities committed by both sides and reflect on some of the war's most significant turning points, from the deadly introduction of female suicide bombers to the final bloody showdown on a beach near Jaffna, where government forces conclusively defeated the Tamil Tigers.
Poets featured include Cheran, probably the most significant living Tamil poet, whose poems chart the history of the war and of a landscape once idyllic, now devastated. There is also a poem by S. Sivaramani, a promising young woman poet who committed suicide in 1991. In Oppressed by Nights of War she describes the impact of the violence and fear on children.
Presenter Lakshmi Holmström MBE is a widely acclaimed translator of Tamil fiction and poetry. A collection of her translations of Cheran's poetry is to be published this summer, titled In a Time of Burning.

A Sri Lankan Buddhist Monk Speaks Out – Let Sri Lanka Have Thousands Of Buddha Putras Like Him

By Colombo Telegraph -April 8, 2013
Colombo TelegraphIn this video a Buddhist monk,  Ven Dhammananda speaks on Sri Lanka’s war and the Buddhists way of conflict resolution.
“It is indeed heartening to see an erudite Buddhist priest speaking out, guided by the teaching of the Master, when many have chosen to remain silent. Ven Dhammananda, Lecturer at the University of Kelaniya, speaks through his experience, but has not been angered or being revengeful despite the personal loss to him. Let Sri Lanka have thousands of Buddha Putras like him to guide this nation, which is now stranded and moving aimlessly, to its future glory!” says a former Deputy Governor – Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Dr. W.A. Wijewardena.

‘Tamil Nadu, diaspora youth brook no compromise on Tamil Eelam’

[TamilNet, Monday, 08 April 2013, 04:31 GMT]
TamilNetTamil students and activists in Tamil Nadu and the Eezham Tamil diaspora have firmly voiced for the creation of a sovereign Tamil Eelam in their recent protests. The trend set by the student upsurge in TN has inspired the diaspora youth to conceptually challenge the International Community of Establishments. A strong realization of the necessity of a struggle addressing the ICE and to course correct pro-establishment elements is being strongly felt among second-generation activists in the diaspora. This understanding was reflected by Tamil youth and grassroots activists from Tamil Nadu, Canada and UK.

Speaking from a protest in Chennai against participation of Sri Lankan players in the IPL on 30 March, Pirapaharan, a student activist with the Students Federation for Liberation of Tamil Eelam, said that the International Community should recognize the genocide of the Eezham Tamil nation and that a referendum must be conducted to facilitate the creation of Tamil Eelam, adding that protests will continue till these demands are met.

Ms Kavitha, from the same organization, said that the Sri Lankan players should not be allowed to play anywhere in India.

The student protests in Tamil Nadu have also faced attacks from Congress party elements in the recent past.

Peacefully demonstrating students were attacked by Congressmen earlier in Trichy and Virudhunagar.

Youth and grassroots activists from UK and Canada lauded the spirit of the student protests in TN through video messages, emphasising that the Tamil Nadu students and the diaspora youth will brook no compromise on Tamil Eelam.

At a time when even some sections of the diaspora are still backing a LLRC-based US resolution that denies the historical, earned and remedial sovereignties of the Eezham Tamil nation, the Tamil Nadu student uprising is giving a more principled, pragmatic and strategic approach to challenging with the international establishments, opines Krisna Saravanamuttu, Eezham Tamil youth activist from Canada and a democratically elected representative of Eezham Tamils in Canada, in a message sent to the TN students on Monday.

“While powerful states and world establishments continue to aid and abet the genocide of our nation, while others continue to stand idly by it, you have given your all in the defence of the occupied state of Tamil Eelam. You have not forgotten that the Tamil nation has experienced the most entrenched form of discrimination of any group in the island of Sri Lanka. You have not forgotten that dismantling the national existence of our people has been a central policy of every single government since Sri Lankan independence,” Mr Saravanamuttu conveyed to the Tamil Nadu students.

“Through your historic demonstrations, you have rightfully pointed out that the pro-LLRC US resolution fails to take into account the long history of Sri Lankan state policies that have undermined our social, economic and political sovereignty. Through your demonstrations you have pointed out that the resolution assumes that solutions to our nation’s grievances can be found and addressed within the very same parameters of the Sri Lankan genocidal state by tinkering with various laws, policies and programs,” he further said, elaborating from history that external solutions that did not recognize the sovereignty of the Eezham Tamil nation were rejected by Tamils world over.

Activists from the mass demonstration in London on Friday, which saw the participation of over 5000 Tamils from the UK rejecting any LLRC-based solution, also conveyed support for the demands of the Tamil Nadu students and criticizing the complicity of the establishments in the genocide of the Eezham Tamil nation.

Grassroots activists from the UK Mr Muthu talked about how the TN student movement provided the inspiration for protests in the diaspora. Stating that “It is not wrong to fall, it is wrong to remain fallen,” he appreciated the new leadership that was emerging from the Tamil Nadu students’ upsurge, drawing analogies with how a popular student movement in Tamil Eelam developed into the national liberation struggle.

Ex-TNA parliamentarian Mr Jeyanandamoorthy, who is also a democratically elected representative of Eezham Tamils in the UK, criticizing the LLRC-based US resolution as hollow, and appreciating the resoluteness of the Tamil Nadu students in settling for no demand less than a sovereign state of Tamil Eelam, asserted that this student protest and uprising cannot be stopped by anyone and that the diaspora Tamils view these protests as conceptually strong.

Ms. Sanju Ganesan, an activist with the TYO-UK, stating that Tamils had gathered in London to demonstrate against the injustice of the International Community (IC) said that the resolution passed in Geneva in March does not help the Eezham Tamils in anyway. “We have been telling the IC that we need our own state, our right to self-determination” she said, adding that protests will continue till this demand is recognized.

Youth activist Ms. Camalita Calistus emphasising that that Tamils do not need any resolution that does not recognize Tamil Eelam as the only solution, urged the diaspora youth to join in protest with the student protests in Tamil Nadu.
