Displaying firearms cannot stop our march forward – Somawansa Amarasinghe

logo

We want a just society. We should create it as it would not fall from the sky. We have to win it. Our programmes cannot be stopped by murdering our members or displaying T-56 rifles. This murderous culture of the bankrupt political system should be stopped. The latest murders were committed at Katuwana, the adjoining village. These perpetrators should be arrested. They should be taken before Court. We would continue to agitate against these murders and we would apprise organizations and foreign parties that have relations with us. We would get support from them. Hence, this issue would be discussed locally as well as internationally said the Leader of the JVP Somawansa Amarasinghe.
Mr. Amarasinghe made these observations at a meeting held at Ransagoda area at Hakmana in Matara District on the 17th.
Speaking further Mr. Amarasinghe said, “Very often criminals are not arrested. However, we wouldn’t allow that to happen in this case. We should struggle for justice and win. We could win this struggle. Mahinda Rajapaksa government is bankrupt.  Everyone is a member of the struggle for liberation. This country is going through a critical phase. We feel the political change. We hear from the state TV that the country has been developed. Why are there so many issues if the country has been developed?
The head of the country does not understand issues in the country. He doesn’t understand the difficulties of the masses or the spiraling prices of essential commodities. When we work in the political field he becomes responsive. It could be seen from what he does.
Billions of money was spent and thousands of acres of land were buried to build highways and the harbor. Our foreign exchange reserves have been acutely reduced. When they were opened we were told the country would get much foreign exchange. However, no ships came to the Hambantota harbor. There are no agreements for ships to come there. A few cars were brought there recently. Cars have to be taken to Colombo on land.
The patient called Sri Lanka is serious now. It is the general public that has to bear the burden. Rajapaksa’s thugs cannot stop us telling this to the masses.  It is said that there would be a food issue soon. The government has no plans to confront this. What the government could do is only to take loans from the world. When the war was over it was said the war dividing the country was over and the war to develop the country would begin. However, the income of the masses is not enough to feed their families. There are no plans to develop agriculture or dairy farming so that we have to import all that with loans obtained from foreign institutions. The people in the country have been pushed to the wall. They have to struggle to come forward.”
The JVP Member from Southern Provincial Council Ajanthe Gammadda also participated.

‘Lankatruth’ has received several videos of Joolampitiya Amare, main suspect of Katuwana murders.  The IGP said at a media briefing yesterday (18th) that he has several warrants but the police have not been able to arrest him. However, in these videos Amare is singing at a musical show held on 22nd April this year.
He is dressed in Army uniform while singing at this public show. The IGP said he could not be arrested as he had been evading arrest.

The Public’s Right Know,The Remarkable Transformation Of The Ex-CJ And The Sitting Judges

The Public’s Right to Information – The only effective Counter to Misinformation
The President has declared that any citizen requiring information has only to ask him. The Speaker has indicated that Democracy cannot survive in Sri Lanka unless questions raised in Parliament are answered fairly and adequately.
An Ex-Chief Justice who, as CJ propounded, the age-old doctrine of Public Trust (which, in essence, is that all public office is held in trust for the Public) has recently opined that “The Right to Information was blocked in Sri Lanka and it was an absolute necessity for the country as the rights of the people were being eroded in a massive way”.
Whatever credibility may be attached to the statements from the “Executive” and the “Legislative” branches of Government may be, the statement from the “Judiciary” merits serious consideration. Prima facie, it reflects the frustration of an ex-Chief Justice whose strenuous efforts to remove the blockages to the Right to Information in the Judicial System have proved futile.
The Institutions charged with the primary responsibility of actively clearing blocks to the Public’s Right to Information are the Supreme Court, the Judicial Service Commission and the Bar – both official and private.
A lawyer  “friend” of this Ex-CJ sought his assistance as Attorney General, in respect of a massive fraud perpetrated on hundreds of bona fide depositors by an Investment Company controlled by Lawyers, that offered 42% interest on investments, purportedly secured by “Gilt-edged Security” and attracted hundreds of gullible, though bona fide depositors and defaulted after one year, having inter alia, forged the signatures of the unsuspecting depositors and making a mockery of the guarantee of “gilt-edged security”.

SLFP too had to condemn the murders

logoTUESDAY, 19 JUNE 2012

“Sri Lanka Freedom Party expresses its vehement condemnation regarding the heinous shooting targeting a JVP propaganda rally held at Katuwana area in Walasmulla” is a part of a media release issued with the signature of  SLFP Treasurer Minister Dulles Alahapperuma.
What is peculiar is that the murders were committed on the 15th but the SLFP had to wait until a day after the funerals of Ms. Edirimannage Manel and Nimanthe Rohan to issue the press release.
The press release issued by the SLFP after five days of the murders is reproduced here.

UPA Government May Not Be Able To Continue With The Anti-Tamil Policies

June 19, 2012
By Ramu Manivannan -

Colombo TelegraphThere is an undeniable Tamil Nadu factor in Indo-Sri Lanka relationship. While successive governments at the centre deem it as a subversive but maneuverable constituency, the political establishment in Sri Lanka sees it as a plain villain.
Now, after the 60-year struggle for political equality and dignity for the Tamils in the island nation ended in May 2009, the role of the Indian government in supporting the military solution enforced by the Sri Lankan government has raised questions.
Among the factors attributed to the defeat of the Congress-DMK combine in the 2011 elections in Tamil Nadu is the UPA coalition government’s Sri Lanka policy. People of the state responded decisively at the first opportunity that came their way.
The Congress party failed to differentiate its anger against the LTTE with the historical ties between India and the Tamils of Sri Lanka.
The Indian government gave an impression that Sri Lanka was in fact fighting India’s war, as Sri Lankan defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse repeatedly said on several occasions, and which was not refuted or challenged by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The accusation of Indian complicity to the war crimes in Sri Lanka assumes significance on this ground.
People of Tamil Nadu are concerned about the Indian government’s flawed policies.
The two unanimous resolutions passed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly last month also raises serious concerns about the operational ethics and conduct of our Sri Lanka policy since the assumption of UPA-I in 2004.
The first resolution calls for economic sanctions against the Sri Lankan government for the war crimes committed by its armed forces in the war against the LTTE and the second resolution demanded retrieval of Katchatheevu island from Sri Lanka.
The resolutions pointedly stare at the Congress led UPA coalition for its complicity in supporting the brutal military approach of the Rajapakse government in Sri Lanka, while questioning the decision of the Congress leadership in ceding Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka in 1974.
The two resolutions also raise alarm at the bureaucratic despotism of the MEA in defining the Sri Lanka policy without any political accountability.
The primary significance of these two resolutions arise from the fact that there is a growing acknowledgement of the war crimes committed by Sri Lanka among public intellectuals, human rights advocates, and various international bodies including the UN and the Permanent Peoples Tribunal, Dublin (PPT).
The raising of the issue of war crimes committed by the Sri Lankan government and proposal for economic sanctions against Sri Lanka as sought by Jayalalitha has opened the possibilities of review of our Sri Lanka policy.
And Tamil Nadu is within its rights to press for a parliament debate on India’s Sri Lanka policy.

WikiLeaks: Senior Editors At The Upali Group Are Crusty Survivors

June 19, 2012

Colombo Telegraph“Meanwhile,Sri Lanka’s independent media houses have assumed an unruffled wait-and-see mode. Senior editors at the Upali Group (which publishes independent dailies and weekenders in English and Sinhala) are crusty survivors who tell us that they’ve ‘seen it all before.’ And the owner of the Wijeya Group (which, like Upali, publishes independent dailies and weekenders in English and Sinhala) said that he had not been particularly comfortable under the UNP government and anticipated ‘nothing unusual’ now. On a more pragmatic level, contacts at both Upali and Wijeya predicted that the President’s move would simultaneously increase readership (by piquing interest in the story) and lead to a further loss of credibility for the Lake House Press.”the US Embassy Colombo informed Washington.
Ranjith had not been particularly comfortable under the UNP
The Colombo Telegraph found the related leaked cable from the WikiLeaks database dated November 6, 2003. The cable is classified as “CONFIDENTIAL” and written by Charge’d’ Affaires James F. Entwistle. The cable details the political situation just after then President Chandrika Kumaratunge.
Under the subheading “Impact on the press” James F. Entwistle wrote “These developments have already affected Sri- Lanka’s government-owned media houses, where new, pro-PA leadership has been hastily installed (see Ref B.) What impact these new players will have on the government- owned media remains to be seen. However, some observers have already noted changes — perhaps coincidental, probably not — in the above-the-fold front page of the government-controlled Lake House’s flagship daily, the English-language DAILY NEWS:
– 11/5: a headshot of the PM and headlines that call the President’s actions ‘a deliberate and opportunistic act’ and quote the PM as saying: ‘I will ensure people’s mandate is implemented.’
– 11/6: (the first day of the new PA-installed publishing leadership): ‘Ceasefire agreement will stand – Kadirgamar’ and “President supreme in Lanka’s defence – Supreme Court.”
Under the subheading “Situation in Colombo Calm” James wrote “The situation in Colombo remains quiet, with people moving about the city as usual. Adding to the calm atmosphere, the Norwegian Ambassador told Charge’ that he had received assurances from the chiefs of the Sri Lanka Army, Navy and Air Force that they would continue to abide by the rulings of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission. SLMM spokesperson Agnes Bragadottir characterized SLMM operations island-wide to poloff as ‘business as usual.’

The political meaning of the retreat in London

“It was under these circumstances that Rajapaksa agreed to forego his own limousine and travel to Marlborough House at Pall Mall in an unmarked vehicle belonging to the Metropolitan Police . The President and First Lady entered Marlborough House premises in a Range Rover bearing the number plate VX 12 CYY. The vehicle did not fly the lion flag for obvious reasons.
Thousands of demonstrators mainly young Tamils from England,Scotland, France,Germany and Switzerland massed outside Marlborough House ,chanting slogans against President Rajapaksa . They also waved placards and held banners aloft. An effigy of the President as if hanging on the gallows was also dragged and carried about. It was later burnt.
A recurring theme in the slogans chanted was “Sri Lanka President War Criminal”. This cry went up loudly whenever a guest arrived. The shouts echoed around the forecourt as each of the 70-75 guests went in.” – DBS Jeyaraj[1]
DBS Jeyaraj is not a representative of the Tamil diaspora that has set out to wage war against the government of Sri Lanka. He is a journalist who lives in Canada and maintains links to all sides. What he has reported is quite similar to other reports that have appeared in the media regarding this incident.
At the same time, there was a group of about one hundred demonstrators near the hotel where the President was staying, who called out the slogan ‘Rajapakse is our King’.
President Rajapakse was forced to attend the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations in a clandestine vehicle in the face of Tamil protesters demonstrating against his visit to London. A speech that he had been due to make at a Conference around the same time had to be cancelled. These were incidents that proved to be newsworthy as far as the national and international media was concerned. Many reports described this as a defeat for President Rajapakse and a victory for the international Tamil community.

West's complicity with Sri Lankan war crimes
15 JUNE 2012
Rodolfo Reyes Rodríguez, Cuba’s Permanent Representative to United Nations Office at Geneva, argued at the 19th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC), last March 22, that the United States acted contradictorily when it presented a resolution slightly criticizing Sri Lanka for not having addressed human rights abuse issues during the end of the civil war between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). [1]
Rodríguez ridiculed the US position given that, as he said, 40% of military hardware sold to Sri Lankan governments between 1983 and 2009 (the duration of the war for liberation) came from it and its closest allies, the UK and Israel. [2]

“Why do they doubt Sri Lanka after having sold so many weapons?” Rodríguez inquired. While Cuba backed Sri Lanka 100%, disregarding the plight of over two million Tamils, its ambassador considered the US resolution as “interference” into the affairs of the sovereign state.

An excellent book, Arms Trade with Sri Lanka: global business, local costs [3] put out by the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society  and the Swedish Sri Lanka Committee provides some hard-to-find  figures on what countries provided what armaments to Sri Lanka.

Joolampitiye Amare has met his waterloo when he attacked the JVP meeting held at Katuwana said JVP Parliamentarian Anura Dissanayake adding that the struggle would not be stopped until the murderers are brought before the law.
He said this addressing the masses after the end of an agitation held at Katuwana to protest against the killings, to demand the government to arrest the murderers and bring them before the law.
Speaking further Mr. Dissanayake said, “The murderers are before our eyes. Even children know who is responsible for the murders. The government and the police depend on taxes levied from the people. We ask the police whether they are prepared to strip naked before an underworld thug and betray the dignity of the force. The Director General of the MCNS and the police spokesman come out with fabrications to protect murderers.
The JVP is a political movement that sacrificed more than 60,000 lives on behalf of the rights of the people in this country. No one can stop our struggle. We carry out our struggle today at Katuwana, tomorrow in Colombo and from there onwards in several towns in other countries. Hundreds and thousands of masses who cherish freedom and democracy would rally around this struggle.  We invite all people to come forward to end the worthless and immoral Rajapaksa regime.”

Civil disobedience against occupying SL military's land grab gains momentum

Protest against land grab in Jaffna
Protest against land grab in JaffnaTamilNet[TamilNet, Monday, 18 June 2012, 15:14 GMT]
The Sri Lankan Police in Jaffna on Monday blocked a protest that gained momentum receiving wider participation against the occupying SL military's land grab in the peninsula. As hundreds of activists gathered in front of the Jaffna Bus Stand, the SL Police appealed to the Judge of the District Court stating that the Police had information that 'destructive elements' were about to use the protest to disturb normalcy in the city and blocked the protest at last minute. The protest, initiated by the Tamil National Peoples Front (TNPF) and attended by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), Mano Ganesan's Democratic Peoples Front (DPF) and the leftist parties from the South as well the support it received from the Jaffna University Students Union (JUSU) and the trade unions including the teachers trade union, marked the protest as first of its kind in the post-war scenario in the peninsula.

Following the 'sabotage' move by the SL Police, using the legal system of the unitary Sri Lanka, a court order was issued banning the specific protest.

The SL police obtained ‘legal’ permission to cancel the protest and disperse the crowd, based on its report submitted to Jaffna District Judge M. Ganesarajah.

While the public was pushing for the protest to be carried on as planned, the organisers cancelled it, saying that their next move would expose the legal system as they would seek to secure permission from the same court before staging the next protest.

The protest had been announced in front of the Jaffna Central Bus Stand.

Mr Selvaraja Kajendren, the general secretary of the TNPF, said that the ‘legal move’ by the SL Police to curb the protestors against the land grab, only indicated that the forces behind land grab in the peninsula have been severely disturbed by the emerging trend to stage protest against the illegal appropriations of land.

The leading participants addressed the public by conducting a press conference at the TNPF office situated on 3rd Cross Street.

Reiterating unity across parties opposing the land grab by the SL State, the organisers urged the masses to take part in the protest announced by the TNA in Valikaamam demanding Colombo to demilitarise the so-called High Security Zone.

The mobilisation against land grab, initiated in the form of civil protest, has become a success as it had threatened the Colombo establishment and as it had created a trend in bringing all the actors to stand united against the land grab, independent observers in Jaffna told TamilNet.

In the meantime, protests are being planned against land grab in Thirumu'rika'ndi in Ki'linochchi and in Mullaiththeevu in the coming days.

Colombo world’s fourth worst bourse
article_imageJune 18, 2012
Sri Lanka’s stock exchange is just ahead of troubled European economies Greece and Spain in terms of year-to-date performance, a recent survey conducted by a US based investment group shows.

According to an analysis by Bespoke Investment Group published last week, the Colombo Stock Stock Exchange (CSE) is the world’s fourth worst performing stock exchange so far this year, with the All Share Price Index down 18.95 percent year-to-date, only ahead of troubled Greece (down 19.14 percent) and Spain (down 22.22 percent). Ukraine has the worst performing bourse which has fallen 31.02 since the beginning of this year.

According to the table below compiled by Bespoke Investment Group, the US has taken the lead amongst G7 countries with a year-to-date gain of 5.15 percent.

"Up until last week, Germany had the lead, but with a YTD gain of 3.87 percent, Germany ranks second in the G7.  Italy is by far the worst performing G7 country at the moment with a YTD decline of 14.10 percent.  France and Canada are both down roughly 4 percent, while the UK is down 2.01 percent.  Japan is up slightly at 1.34 percent.

"Vietnam holds the overall lead with a 2012 gain of 20.97 percent.  Pakistan ranks a close second at +20.34 percent.  While Greece and Spain continue to dominate the negative headlines, the Ukraine is actually the worst performing market year to date with a decline of 31 percent, Ouch," the investment group said.

"Looking at just the BRICs, India has the lead with a 2012 gain of 7.91 percent.  China ranks second at +4.39 percent, while Brazil and Russia are both in the red."

Since the end of thirty year conflict in 2009, the Colombo Stock Exchange had held the position as the best and second-best performing stock exchange in the world. But the bourse fell 8.5 percent last year after massive growth rates of 96 percent in 2010 and 125.3 percent in 2009.

A series of regulatory measures to cool down the exchange has seen the correction continue in to this year as well. Regulation has also seemed to have put the brakes on market manipulation and the kind of activity that earned the bourse the reputation for being a den of gamblers and thieves.

The Colombo Stock Exchange fell last year when watchdog the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) imposed price bands and commenced investigations on suspect trades. Influential lobbying with the President resulted in then Director General of the SEC Malik Cader being removed and appointed to the Treasury and as a result, SEC Chairperson Ms. Indrani Sugathadasa resigned soon after ‘as a matter of principle’.

Amare the brutal double murderer given Rajapakses’ STF security

(Lanka-e-News-18.June.2012, 2.00PM) When the whole country and opposition parties are agitating to arrest the notorious criminal Geethanagamge Amarasena alias Julampitiya Amare over the brutal killing of two JVP members when they were holding a meeting with the Public at Katuwana, Hambantota ,(President’s electorate) , based on reports reaching Lanka e news , the murderer Amare is on the contrary being provided with six STF soldiers for his personal security by the Rajapakses .

This STF group is from that which is providing security to the Carlton House of Rajapakses. Though a top level CID group had arrived to conduct investigations at Katuwana,, it is common knowledge going by the Govt. investigations in the past ,that the Rajapakses entrust these investigations not to catch the culprit but to suppress truth.

The Bharatha Lakshman murder , the museum robbery and two Buddhist prelate murders at Kotte bear testimony to this fact. It is the habit and hobby of the Rajapakses to misdirect to suit their needs and quash the investigations.

The residents say , the CID is conducting investigations after arriving in Katawuna in the most queer way. As soon as Amare the suspect’s name is mentioned , they don’t record his name . They put words into the witness’ mouth by saying if you see you can’t identify him know? In order to exclude him in the identification parade the police cops make a record accordingly.

The cops say , when Namal Rajapakse comes to Hambantota , he travels publicly with Amare , and even messages to the police are conveyed through him . They also lamented that when Amare the criminal a byword for lawlessness comes to the police station , without alighting from his defender jeep he gives orders disdainfully to cops ‘ I say ask the OIC to come’. The OIC who is supposedly an enforcer of the law then like a stray dog which has been offered a rotten bone dashes towards him. This is the lawless and degrading scenario in this police station , the low rung cops pointed out.
Every ordinary police officer of police stations , Katuwana, Walasmulla, Wereaketiya,Tangalle ,Middeniya and Thanamalvila express these same sentiments.

Even when Amare killed an officer of the Forces , and assaulted a police officer, laws could not be enforced against him because the Rajapakses gave full protection to Amare . In this incident too the laws are being trampled ruthlessly to save a ruthless murderer by a ruthless regime, the cops stated . Laws have gone to the dogs in this country with this Rajapakse balu administration , they added.

Tamil Tragedy

Logo
June 18, 2012
The role of a Member of Parliament is never more sad than when meeting with Canadians who are deeply concerned over the mistreatment and even death of loved ones and friends left behind in their homeland. Such was my emotion when I first learned from my Tamil Canadian constituents about the tragedy that was unfolding in Sri Lanka in 2009.
As I soon learned, Tamils in Sri Lanka have not enjoyed the rights and freedoms Canadians take for granted since at least the 1970s. Real concern exists about hostility in Sri Lanka toward the culture and language of Tamils, and toward Tamils themselves. A variety of efforts were unsuccessful in obtaining simple assurances of equity, and some took up violence.
Although Canada consistently encourages people to limit themselves to peaceful means, no Canadian could sit by in silence witnessing the manner in which the Sri Lankan Government ended that conflict.
Our Government sent a Cabinet Minister as envoy to Sri Lanka urging restraint upon the regime. We participated in multi-nation efforts to pressure Sri Lanka to act humanely. We dedicated $22.5 million in extra humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka in 2009.
On behalf of the Canadian Tamil community, I consistently advocated for the strongest possible responses by the Canadian Government, and raised the plight of Tamils in the Chamber of the House of Commons.
Since the end of the armed conflict Canada has continually called for a transparent and independent review of the conduct of the Sri Lanka government. We have brought diplomatic pressure to bear, through the Commonwealth and otherwise.
I have seen the BBC reports cataloguing barbaric acts committed against Tamils, both combatants and civilians during the final weeks of the conflict. I am convinced of their authenticity. Until a thorough investigation of these events, transparent to international observers, is conducted and a just reconciliation is achieved, the international community should, in my opinion, apply a full range of sanctions against the Sri Lankan regime.
I continue to remind Tamil Canadians that hope is never more necessary than in the midst of tragedy. As the wise and courageous Mahatma Gandhi observed:
“There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time they seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall – think of it always. All through history, the way of truth and love has always won.”
I will continue to extend the hand of friendship to the Tamil Canadian community, and remain your voice in the Parliament of Canada for the pursuit of universal human rights by every peaceful means, in Sri Lanka and everywhere.
