Country of Eezham Tamils mourns silently on Mu’l’livaaykkaal Day

[TamilNet, Thursday, 19 May 2011, 02:44 GMT]TamilNetSubjugated to the extent of not being to able to even observe remembrance of the death of their kith and kin killed in thousands at Mu’l’lvaaykkaay in a powers-abetted genocide enacted by the Sri Lankan State in May 2009, the nation of Eezham Tamils on Wednesday demonstrated dormant anger through silent observations and confining themselves to their houses. The occupying military has ordered against any renting of public halls on Wednesday and has threatened potential organizers with dire consequences. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has requested people to mourn silently, and people responded. Movement of public, travel and commercial activities were very negligible in Jaffna and in other parts of the country of Eezham Tamils,

A few Sinhala students recently admitted to Jaffna University chose the Mu’l’livaaykkaal Day to erect a decorated pandal at Thirunelveali Junction to ‘celebrate’ the birth of Buddha and to distribute eatables to passers by, while the Eezham Tamils subjugated to the extent of not being able to even openly observe the remembrance of their dead were silently mourning on Wednesday. While activities of Colombo in the occupied country of Eezham Tamils clearly show ‘reconciliation’ means subjugation and genocide, the US State Department that coined the paradigm ‘post-war reconciliation’ instead of post-war justice, and the supporting institutions of the West, are either once again outwitted by Sinhala diplomacy, or they wanted things to happen in this way, commented students of the Jaffna university.

32 Sinhala students were recently admitted to the University of Jaffna. They have formed a Sinhala-Buddhist association. The act of the association on the Mu'l'lvaaykkaal Day, backed by the occupying Army in Jaffna, has evoked serious anger in the university community and among the people of the locality.

This will reflect in the Tamil-Sinhala student relationship, student activists in the island said. The Sinhala Army enacted similar situations and made use of them to station a ‘security post’ inside the Batticaloa University campus and to intimidate the Tamil students, they pointed out.

When the small number of Sinhala students wanted to observe the 2600 years of the birth of Buddha, the general student community of the Jaffna University accepted it considering the religious significance of the occasion, and a religious observation was held in the campus on Tuesday night. But the following day the Sinhala students, with the backing of the occupying Army, played the mischief when the nation of Eezham Tamils were mourning, university circles said.

Every single act in the name of ‘reconciliation’ by the state of Sri Lanka and its occupying Army is meticulously designed to make it ultimate subjugation and structural genocide of the nation of Eezham Tamils, the university circles further said.

If the international court prosecutors can request judges to issue arrest warrants on charges of crimes against humanity against Libyan leaders, then why not against the leaders in Sri Lanka too? This is the call from the international Tamil community.
Two years ago today the Sri Lankan government declared the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) bringing an end to a civil war that lasted more than three decades between the Sinhalese and the Tamil communities. But, while the conflict is officially over, the scars run deep.        Full Story>

UN Panel Report on Accountability in Sri LankaGulbin Sultana

May 18, 2011
The three member Panel of Experts appointed by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to advise him about human rights violations during the last phase of the civil war in Sri Lanka submitted its report on April 12, 2011 in New York.1 Before the report was made public, the Sri Lankan media published a leaked version of it and strongly denounced the efforts of the UN Panel. Millions of Sri Lankans have signed a petition against the UN Panel report and almost all the Sinhala parties have vehemently condemned the report.
The report indicates serious violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law by both the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and the LTTE. It recommends an independent international investigation for the war crimes committed by both parties.    Full Story>>>

Two years since the end of war

Two years after the end of the war, most Sri Lankans feel a sense of relief that there is no more fighting, and that the Tamil Tiger bomb attacks which used to rock towns and cities including the capital no longer take place.
Yet many are still ambivalent about the nature of post-war Sri Lanka under the increasingly powerful Sinhalese nationalist president, Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Tamils mark two years since end of Sri Lanka's civil war

Updated May 18, 2011 22:12:32

Two years after the end of the bloody civil war in Sri Lanka, reconciliation between Tamils and the Sinhalese remains fraught with challenges.

Tamils around the world have gathered to commemorate the tens of thousands of lives lost during the final months of the war - when there was a sharp escalation in violence.

In Melbourne, the Tamil diaspora called on the Australian government to back the findings of a UN advisory report, which recommended an independent investigation into claims of atrocities perpetrated by both the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tiger sepatratists.

The Sri Lankan government says the report was "shoddy" and refutes any claims of atrocities.

Retired Senior DIG Nimal Lewke says the controversial ‘Darusman Report’ had made a shameful attempt to discredit Sri Lanka on the basis of unsubstantiated allegations levelled against law enforcement agencies. The post-war allegations, particularly with regard to rape and sexual abuse at detention facilities in the North had been part of their sordid operation to force the government of Sri Lanka to accept an international war crimes investigation.    Full Story>>>>

Ron Ridenour writes on the dilemma of socialist leaning governments on Tamil Genocide

Ron Ridenour
Ron Ridenour, a veteran journalist, author and editor, who worked for decades for anti-imperialist ideology with a special focus on Latin American affairs, is author of several books including Cuba Beyond the Crossroads (2006) and Cuba at Sea (2008).

[TamilNet, Monday, 16 May 2011, 13:36 GMT]
The countries in the United Nations are divided in two blocs when it comes to the plight of Eezham Tamils. Those who tag themselves behind a world order promoted by the USA, and those who are in the opposing camp, many of them from the non-alignment movement (NAMs) and Cuba, Venuzela led ALBA countries of Latin America. These countries supported the Sri Lankan state in the previous UN Human Rights Council sessions. “However, ALBA partners now have a chance, whether on the UN Human Rights Council or not, to help the Tamil people in some way, also by calling for an investigation,” writes Ron Ridenour, a veteran US born but now Denmark-based leftist and anti-imperialist, who voiced against the US aggression on Cuba in 1961, jailed in the US for his views on several occasions and contributed extensively to the study of Latin America.

Also observing the history of Sri Lankan leftists, Mr. Ridenour writes: “Unfortunately, and without comprehension from my viewpoint, most of the Sinhalese-led Communist, Trotskyist, and Maoist parties have immorally allied themselves with the two major parties [of Sinhala mainstream politics] to keep the Tamils down.”

Sri Lanka: Is the UN report factually reliable?

16-May-2011
Guest Column: Dr Kumar David
There is outrage in Colombo and frenzy in the Sinhala diaspora about the Marzuki Darusman, Steven Ratner, Yasmin Sooka report to UNSG about war crimes in Sri Lanka. The law society, organisations of professionals and most Sinhalese political parties have thrown their weight behind the regime supporters mobilising on the streets. Conversely, Tamils and the outside world accept the reports veracity. GoSL’s friends Russia and China say raking up a fuss will “complicate” reconciliation but have not contested the report’s factuality. The Indian Government, GoSL’s principal champion, has kept a low profile, but Indian public opinion is outraged and even Rajapakse stalwart Hindu is less blasé than usual. Either the whole outside world is insane, or, appalling atrocities were perpetrated by both GoSL and the LTTE in the closing months of the war.                                              Full Story>>>

Occupying Army adds insult to injury in Jaffna

The commander of the occupying genocidal Army of Sri Lanka,
Maj. Gen. Mahinda Hathurusinghe accompanied by large number of troops on Saturday visited the Changkaanai Murugamoorthi temple where the chief priest was killed and his two sons were fatally injured in a vicious firing, during a time when the occupiers were terrorising the people of Jaffna after the Heroes Day last November. “A special Pooja to invoke blessing on Commander Security Forces - Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe and the troops serving in Jaffna was held,” said the website of the genocidal Army, adding that the Army prayed to stay more and more in Jaffna. Besides adding insult to injury, it was a subtle show of intimidation aimed at silencing or twisting evidence, observers said.
