The Radical Buddhist Monks And Their Goal

By R.M.B Senanayake -April 24, 2014

Colombo TelegraphI refer to Mr. Kalana Senaratne’s analysis and explanation of the radicalization of Buddhist monks and the emergence of extremist organizations such as the Bodu Bala Sena.
I have a different explanation of this social phenomenon. This is a sociological explanation and not a passing of judgment.
The Buddhist monks had traditionally occupied a place of honor and prestige in society. With such prestige also went power – soft power but nevertheless power. But with the colonial occupations they lost such position. They saw that Independence in 1948 only gave power to westernized secular liberal political elite who did not provide for the restoration of their former special position.
They had Anagarika Dharmapala to inspire them to look for a revival of Buddhist supremacy and hegemony in the State –really it is hegemony for the Buddhist monks.  I am quoting from Wikipedia about the Anagarika.
Dharmapala and his associates very much encouraged and contributed to something aptly called the “ethnocratic state.”
BBS CMBWhat he wanted was the restoration of the primacy of Buddhism as the religion of the State. SWRD realized the potential of this Buddhist revivalist movement and harnessed it for his own political ride to power. But he over-estimated his ability to direct and control the movement. He believed in the western liberal values unlike those who have not imbibed these values and who would come to power with time in a society where the medium of education was in the Sinhala language. A language is more than a means of communication. It is a vehicle of culture as well. Of course SWRD adopted Buddhism as his religion to get political legitimacy in the newly emerging society.

I’ve heard of home invasions but this is the first time I’ve watched a Ministry invasion. The country watched while the BBS swarmed into Rishad Bathiudeen’s Ministry in search of missing monk, to wit, Ven Watareka Vijitha thero. Was the latter a suspect in a case of murder, rape, child molestation or even theft? Nope. His alleged crime was not a crime according to any law. It was an offense in the eyes of the BBS though, because he is said to have taken the side of the Muslims in a dispute in Mahiyangana. He is now being hounded, including in the precincts of Government ministries. The manhunt or monk-hunt is being conducted in full public view, on mainstream TV. It is the new reality TV show.
It is difficult to identify which is worse: (a) the fact that there seems to be absolute impunity for this group which has openly arrogated to itself the right to police society and the state as well or (b) the fact that the Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter did not remonstrate publicly with the BBS delegation at its recent visit and instead good naturedly cheered them on (as seen on Derana News) to “do something” in furtherance of their declaration that they had the power to make and unmake governments. Add to this the uncritical remarks by Secretary Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the opening of the BBS’ political academy at Meth Sevana last year and we seemingly have confirmation of Kalana Senaratne’s brilliant recent article in which he posits the thesis that the BBS is not the lunatic fringe but the murkier depths of the mainstream itself.
The BBS activity, most notably of the inspection/invasion of Minister Rishad Bathiuddeen’s Ministry and its declared intention to intervene anywhere it chooses to, bypassing existing laws and law enforcement amounts to a project of theocratic proto-fascism. The detention of the British nurse who had an un-caricatured tattoo of the Buddha on her shoulder and the arrest of a Catholic nun belonging to the Order of Mother Theresa a few years back (she was released after the Cardinal sent a clear message) indicates that the BBS is not merely an organization, but that it represents — and can get away with what it does because it represents— a state of mind, including within the state. The fact that this state of mind does not encompass the state as a whole is exemplified by the excellent conduct of the police officer, who refused to hand over the footage of the CCTV cameras outside Minister Bathiuddeen’s Ministry to the BBS monk who threateningly demanded it.                         Read More

Buddha tattoo woman flies from Sri Lanka ‘with apology’

Buddha tattoo24 APRIL 2014
BBCA British tourist arrested in Sri Lanka because she had a Buddha tattoo on her arm said she has been offered a holiday in the country “as an apology”.
Naomi Coleman will arrive in London later, following a deportation order, as a court refused her permission to continue travelling to The Maldives.
Police said she was arrested for “hurting others’ religious feelings”when she arrived at the airport in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo on Monday.
The holiday offer was made as she left.
Ms Coleman, a mental health nurse from Coventry, flew in to Bandaranaike International Airport from India.
Kissing a Buddha

The 37-year-old said she told police she practised Buddhism and had attended meditation retreats and workshops in Thailand, India, Cambodia and Nepal.
Sri Lankan authorities take strict action against perceived insults to Buddhism, which is the religion of the island’s majority ethnic Sinhalese.
In 2013, another British tourist with a tattoo of the Buddha, Antony Ratcliffe, was also denied entry at Colombo’s airport.
A year earlier, three French tourists were given suspended prison sentences for kissing a Buddha statue.
Following Ms Coleman’s deportation order, she spent a night in prison in Negombo and two nights in a detention centre while security checks were carried out.
She said she was visited at the centre by an embassy official and a representative from Sri Lanka’s Tourism Development Authority.
The authority paid for her flight home in business class and also offered to fly her back for a free holiday in future.
A spokesman said: “Since she couldn’t enjoy her stay… we are ready to welcome her back”.
However, because of the court order on her deportation, he added: “Technically we will have to obtain clearance from the judiciary whether she can travel covering the tattoo in Sri Lanka”.
Police spokesman, Ajith Rohana, said she was convicted under a law which forbids “Deliberately and maliciously outraging the religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs”. He added: “We know tourists don’t do this intentionally”.Naomi Coleman: “I’ve been treated like a criminal”
"They’ve admitted it was wrong, all that happened," Ms Coleman said. "But I’m still having to be deported."
'Never offend'
Her mother, Julie Mockford, said: “She’s been treated like a criminal. To be honest, if she’d have known about that there’s no way she would have gone there, or displayed the tattoo anyway.
"She’d never mean to offend anyone, she’s a good person."
Her best friend in Coventry, Alicia Berry, said: “They said sorry and offered her an all-inclusive trip as compensation but when I spoke to her she said there’s no way she’d ever go back.
"It’s a shame as she’s visited there twice before with no problems and had happy memories of the place."
UK travel advice for Sri Lanka describes the country’s sensitivity about “mistreatment” of Buddhist imagery and warns against visible tattoos of Buddha.

Press Release-on contempt of Quraan by BBS

The National Shoora Council (NSC) urges the government and its principal law enforcement agency, the police, to ensure prompt prosecution of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) led mob which forcibly disrupted under threat of death the 9th April press conference of the respected Buddhist monk Rev. Watareka Wijitha Thera, and thereafter followed up by outraging, maliciously and deliberately, the religious feelings of the Muslims by insulting Islam and the Holy Quran outside the Slave Island Police on 12th April. Both unlawful incidents occurred in the presence of the police, the media and the public.

BBS brings its cold war home, tests official resolve

Thursday 24th April 2014
The Government together with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce strongly condemned the wrongful entry and search of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce premises yesterday by a group of Buddhist monks and individuals who alleged to be a part of Bodu Bala Sena organisation.

Around 11:30 a.m. last morning, five Buddhist monks accompanied by some individuals made a forced and unlawful entry and trespass of the premises of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce at No. 73/1, Galle Road, Colombo 3, disrupting the work of the Ministry in general and its officials in particular, on the pretext of searching for a Buddhist monk hiding in the premises.
Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen stated: “Without any prior permission around 11:30 a.m., five Buddhist monks accompanied by some individuals made a forced and unlawful entry and trespass of Ministry of Industry and Commerce premises at No. 73/1, Galle Road, Colombo 3, disrupting the work of Lakshman Wasantha Perera (Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce), Anura Siriwardena (Secretary, Ministry of Industry and Commerce) and the Ministry in general, saying that they were searching for a Buddhist monk hiding in the premises.
“At the time of their entry, I was not present at the Ministry premises. Nevertheless, I, as the Minister of Industry and Commerce, strongly condemn this form of unruly behaviour of Buddhist monks, who are the religious leaders of the society and who are expected to set a good example to others by their good behaviour. This incident sets a bad precedent in a country that has overcome three decades of terrorism thanks to the efforts of our committed President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
“The Bodu Bala Sena’s continuous violations of law and order with impunity also highlight that religious harmony, vital for Sri Lanka’s next phase of development as envisioned by our President Mahinda Rajapaksa, is now threatened. In fact, the BBS, from its small beginnings, has grown to become a huge threat to the country so much so that its danger to the country exceeds the threat posed by the extremist LTTE. Hence, I call members of BBS to give up such extremist behaviour and follow a moderate path compatible with the teachings of Lord Buddha.”

MR moved by BBS statement of toppling government

bodu bala sena 09The Mahinda Rajapaksa government that initially allowed the Sinhala Buddhist extremist group, Bodhu Bala Sena (BBS), to campaign against the Muslim community in the country and encouraged hate speech against the Muslims is now upset with the statement made by the organization that it would topple the government.

BBS General Secretary Ven. Galagodaththe Gnanasara Thero said at a news conference that the organization could topple the government if it wanted.
The matter was made worse when the Malwatte mahanayake asked Ven. Gnanasara Thero yesterday to address the issue of toppling the government as stated by the BBS.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa who met media heads today said that he would not allow any organization to take the law into their hands.
A mob led by the BBS yesterday stormed Minister Rishad Bathiudeen’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce saying they were looking for the Ven. Watarekke Vijitha Thero.
Ministry officials said that after staging a protest outside the building some of the protesters led by a monk went inside and searched the rooms.
Minister Bathiudeen, who later arrived at the Ministry, said the monks had no right to search a Government Ministry office adding that such practice will not be good for the country or the monks.
The BBS has accused the venerable Ven. Vijitha Thero of working with Minister Bathiudeen to illegally settle several displaced Muslims in the Wilpattu national park.
President Rajapaksa today said that a special Police unit would be established within the Religious Affairs Ministry to inquire complains on religious matters.

Casino Bill is against Constitution: Ven Sobitha

sobitha theroPeople's Movement for Social Justice Chairman the Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera said to the media that it was against the Constitution to approve a Casino Bill in Parliament because the Government was constitutionally bound to protect Buddhism.
The Government should include a clause in this bill that no gambling would be entertained said by the Ven. Sobitha Thera at a news conference yesterday.
“Buddhism rejects gambling and alcohol which leads to the destruction of the morals of the people. So casinos are also against Buddhism. All nefarious activities will end up being centered round the casino hubs. The Government should not approve the casino bill when even the Maha Sangha and other religious leaders have advised against setting them up,” Ven. Sobitha Thera said.
Ven. Sobitha Thera said the Speaker should hold a secret vote on the casino bill so that the parliamentarians could vote according to their conscience.
“The All Ceylon Muslim Congress and the Jathika Hela Urumaya have announced that they would vote against this bill. We urge all the parliamentarians irrespective of their party affiliations to vote against the Bill, which would be detrimental to the religious and cultural traditions of Sri Lanka.”
Sobithe Thero also empahsized that S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike’s Government in1956 closed the racecourse by banning horse racing in Colombo and replaced it with a university but this Government was going to start casinos which are much worse.
Meanwhile United National Party (UNP) MPs will hold a protest rally Today (24) at the proposed site of the Crown Multi-Purpose Development Project at D. R. Wijewardene Mawatha in Colombo to show their opposition to the legislation, under which tax concessions are being granted to three major development projects.

Is The Common Candidate Dead On Arrival?

Is The Common Candidate Dead On Arrival?I’m not an old, experienced hand at politics. But I am now seasoned enough to have learned that the hardest thing about any political campaign is how to win without proving that you are unworthy of winning.”   - Adlai E. Stevenson
Ranill-Anura AP- colombotelegraphIn the wake of the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections, Ranil Wickremesinghe, National Leader of the United National Party (UNP) made an appeal to all opposition parties to forge a common front to topple the incumbent government. But then the  first ‘gunfire’ (wedi muraya) was fired by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). Instead of issuing an unqualified or at least a qualified acceptance of the invitation, it came in the form of a ‘spoke in the wheel’, causing at least a temporary halt to the turning of the wheel. If it did not decelerate the momentum, it certainly brought to light the serious sense of incredulity in which the present leader of the UNP is held by his own colleagues in the so-called ‘common opposition’.

Oh Mahinda!

(EPDP paramilitary mentor Cllr Sinnathurai Thavarajah pleads and is being blessed)

( April 24, 2014, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) In the 70’s, I was a gun carrying militant fighting for a separate state of Tamil Eelam.

I robbed the Peoples Bank in Puloly in 1973 to further my cause.

I was arrested by the police in Puttalam and was tortured naked for many days.

I thank the brutes for sparing my life.

I later joined the EPDP paramilitary and did everything to espouse the Sri Lanka government’s cause against the Tamils.

I am now an appointed councillor of the newly elected Northern Provicial Council.
Oh Mahinda my mentor- our saviour!!

My oath in front of you today is a commitment to pursue my determined path to use all the resources provided me by you to demolish the TNA and its support base.

Please be greatful sir.

Allow us to carry our arms and we will do the job for you.

Redouble your support to increase your funding to the EPDP and permit our paramilitary group unhindered engagement in all the spears of governance under the EPDP leadership.

Devolvement of powers without Parliamentary Select Committee process to the EPDP will be more than adequate for the Tamils and we will continue to have a tab on our people to achieve your ultimate objective to fully marginalise the Tamils.

I do not believe in God but still would say:

‘You will make Sri Lanka a great nation and will bless thee and make thy name great and thou shalt be blessed by the messengers of Buddha -the Bodu Bala Sena, Jathika Hela Urumaya and all the other splinter goups espousing the cause of your Sinala Buddhist state Chinthana’.

US’s rising worries in the Asia-Pacific

US President Barack Obama’s current tour of some of the Asia-Pacific’s foremost states freshly underscores the region’s continuing importance for Washington. Reassuring its allies in the region of US support and succour in times of crisis is apparently one of Obama’s primary aims in visiting South Korea, Japan, the Philippines and Malaysia, but indicating that the US could square-up fully to China’s rising economic and military presence in the region may be a closely connected reason for the wide-ranging tour as well.

Colombo TelegraphNot merely in the Twenty-First Century,
but from the third quarter of the Twentieth, new states have surfaced in different ways from that foreseen in the old Right to Self-Determination and Secession (SD&S) theory which emphasised Nationality. While use of SD&S in current discourse should recall its origins in Leninist discourse, more

crucial is that the concepts be adapted, by lateral thinking, for today’s global context. However, most current discourse lags far behind actuality, as is always the case with static concepts. The purpose of this essay is to bring political theory up to date with events which are moving faster than men’s ability to construct theories thereof. It is a little repetitious of one of my previous essays in CT but some repetition is warranted when exploring new concepts.  Lanka is not mentioned today to discourage CT’s entrenched hoard of bigots and racists from engaging in their usual, pointless, slanging match
Though this is not a polemical piece, allow me to first dispense with a peripheral matter. Dr Dayan Jayatilleka responded to a polemical piece where I criticised him (and Chief Minister CV Wigneswaran) as theoretically and ideologically out of date. His response appeared in CT (Minority Report: Sri Lanka’s Tamil Question a Response to Profs. Kumar David and Laksiri Fernando). I do not intend to reply because Jayatilleka’s rather disjointed ramble is not of a theoretical genre, or to use his words: “To me, ideology . . . has little to do with my practice . . .” I agree with his assessment of his own efforts; therefore there is no reason to debate him. I now return to my substantive topic.
New states in the modern world
The inherited Leninist theoretical framework is illustrated by Wigneswaran’s remarks at the Bernard Soysa memorial lecture earlier this month.
